Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Devinoni Ral:
Answer: The Price
Devinoni Ral was one of the negotiators for a wormhole to the Delta Quadrant that eventually proved unstable. Counselor Troi has an affair with him and discovers he is part Betazoid.
2. Bubble Gum:
Answer: The Most Toys
Kivas Fajo was a collector of unique items who had a keen interest in Data. One of Fajo's most-prized possessions was a rare (He even claimed it was the only) 1962 Roger Maris baseball card, complete with the preserved odor of stale bubble gum.
In 1961, Roger Maris exceeded Babe Ruth's single-season home run record of 60 by hitting his 61st home run during the final game of the season. Maris' record of 61 home runs stood until 1998, when Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs and Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals both toppled that mark. Sosa ended the season with 66, and McGwire set a new record with 70. McGwire's record lasted only three years, however, when Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants blasted 73 homers in 2001.
3. Jarada:
Answer: The Big Goodbye
The Jarada were an insect-like race who were very particular about the use of language. When Picard realizes he's been over-studying the proper greeting, he decides to take a break in the holodeck. This is the first "Dixon Hill" episode.
4. Ian Andrew:
Answer: The Child
Ian Andrew was Counselor Troi's "miracle child" who grew at an exceptional rate. It turned out that Ian was simply an alien life form that was investigating human life on the Enterprise. When he began to realize that his presence, though benign in intent, was detrimental to the lives of the crew, he sacrificed his life to save the ship. Ian Andrew was named for Troi's father, who had died when she was young.
FAST FACT -- This episode, along with Season 4's "Devil's Due", were based on scripts written for the aborted series "Star Trek: Phase II", in the 1970s.
The "Phase II" project eventually led to "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (1979).
5. Minos:
Answer: The Arsenal of Freedom
Minos was a planet whose citizens had specialized in weapons development and trading. But the weapons had become so powerful, they wiped out the planet's population many years before the Enterprise-D arrived. One particular baddie was the Echo Papa 607, a flying surveillance and tactical device that adapted its defenses each time it redeployed. Watch for the "Lollipop" scene in this one!
6. Surata IV:
Answer: Shades of Grey
Surata IV was the planet where Riker got stung by a thorn, which in turn knocked out his nervous system and nearly killed him. To date, this is the only "clip show" episode in the history of "Star Trek," made possible by a season-shortening writer's strike, as well as a tightened season budget.
NOTE - Technically, the "TOS" two-parter "The Menagerie" is a clip show, but since it incorporated footage of the original pilot "The Cage" (which never aired until 1998), this episode is considered "all-original."
7. Microbrain:
Answer: Home Soil
The so-called "microbrain" was an inorganic life form discovered on the planet Velara III. The life form had retaliated against the terraforming project taking place at the time. This episode is memorable for the life form's description of humans as "ugly bags of mostly water."
8. Promellians:
Answer: Booby Trap
The Promellians were one of two ancient species who had been in a protracted war. One of their ships was discovered intact inside an asteroid field by the Enterprise-D, which then fell into the same trap that stranded the ancient vessel. This is the episode in which LaForge creates a hologram of Dr. Leah Brahms and (oops!) falls in love with her!
9. Tox Uthat:
Answer: Captain's Holiday
The Tox Uthat was a crystal from the future capable of harnessing the power of an entire star. This episode marks the first appearance of Vash (Jennifer Hetrick). This is also Max Grodenchik's (Rom of DS9) first "Star Trek" appearance (Billed as Michael Grodenchik).
10. Armus:
Answer: Skin of Evil
Armus was that really slimy entity that killed Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby), simply because he felt like doing it. This was the first time a principal cast member of "Star Trek" was killed off.
NOTE - Yes, Spock died in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", but he was resurrected (for lack of a better word) in the next movie.
11. Philipa Louvois:
Answer: The Measure of a Man
Captain Philipa Louvois was the JAG officer who presided over the trial that determined whether or not Data was a life form.
12. "Broccoli":
Answer: Hollow Pursuits
"Lt. Broccoli" was a behind-the-back nickname of Lt. Reginald Barclay, a brilliant but extremely introverted member of the crew. Even Picard caught himself using the name, and to his face! "Hollow Pursuits" marks the first appearance of Barclay (Dwight Schultz).
13. Riva:
Answer: Loud As a Whisper
Riva was a well-known negotiator who spoke through a "chorus" because he was a deaf-mute. When his chorus is killed in a botched negotiation attempt, he ultimately decides to teach the warring parties sign language as a means to bring peace to that planet. Howie Seago, who played Riva and is deaf, came up with the concept of this episode.
14. Strategema:
Answer: Peak Performance
Strategema was a game at which a Zakdorn named Kolrami excelled proficiently. When he first played Data, Kolrami won. In the rematch, however, Data changed his strategy so that all that could be achieved was a draw.
15. Lal:
Answer: The Offspring
Lal was the android constructed by Data. Essentially, she was Data's "child." She was named for the Hindi word for "beloved."
16. Jewel of Thesia:
Answer: The Outrageous Okona
The Jewel of Thesia was a treasure that was used as a wedding proposal that joined two disputing worlds. Unfortunately, circumstances surrounding its disappearance led to Okona (William O. Campbell of "The Rocketeer") being accused of stealing the jewel. Look for Joe Piscopo as a holographic comedian in this episode.
17. Narendra III:
Answer: Yesterday's Enterprise
Narendra III was the location of the Klingon outpost that the Enterprise-C was trying to defend against a Romulan attack, before being thrown 22 years into the future.
18. U.S.S. Lantree:
Answer: Unnatural Selection
The Lantree was the ship whose crew had died from a disease that causes rapid aging. Dr. Pulaski was also exposed to this disease, but she was saved, thanks to the transporter and some pre-exposure DNA found on her hairbrush!
19. Finn:
Answer: The High Ground
Kyril Finn was the leader of the terrorist group that kidnaped Dr. Crusher on the planet Rutia IV. The planet had been embroiled in a civil war for years and Finn needed someone to care for his people. He was so brash, he even likened himself to "your George Washington."
20. Bendii Syndrome:
Answer: Sarek
Bendii Syndrome is a rare affliction that strikes Vulcans of advanced age. Sarek, who was 202 years old at the time, was beginning to show signs of the condition in this episode. He would later succumb to it in the 2-part episode "Unification". Roughly speaking, Bendii Syndrome is the Vulcan equivalent to Alzheimer's Disease.
21. Angosia:
Answer: The Hunted
Angosia was a planet seeking membership to the Federation. One problem: They had just recovered from a war and all of their veterans were cast out to a maximum security facility on one of their moons. This episode marks the first of several "Star Trek" appearances by James Cromwell (Zephram Cochrane in "Star Trek: First Contact").
22. Galorndan Core:
Answer: The Enemy
Galorndan Core was the stormy planet on which La Forge and a Romulan soldier were stranded; they were forced to cooperate in order to survive the extremely harsh conditions there.
23. U.S.S. Yamato:
Answer: Contagion
The Yamato was the Galaxy-class ship that suddenly exploded while Picard and the Yamato's captain were trying to communicate with one another. The Yamato's destruction was traced back to a mysterious probe launched at her from the planet Iconia.
NOTE - The Yamato had previously been seen in "Where Silence Has Lease", but this ship was actually an elaborate illusion created by the being known as Nagilum.
24. Mariposa:
Answer: Up the Long Ladder
Mariposa was a planet of colonists who were not only quite clean, they were also a population of clones. Years before, they had dropped off other colonists, a simple people now known as the Bringloidi, at another planet. Later, when the Bringloidi were threatened by stellar flares, they were forced to move in with the Mariposans, despite much protest!
25. Marouk:
Answer: The Vengeance Factor
Soveriegn Marouk (Nancy Parsons) was the leader of the Acamarians who was persuaded by Picard to broker a settlement with the outcasts of their society, the Gatherers. At one time, the Acamarians were nothing more than dozens of warring clans, but they eventually evolved past the clan wars and made peace. But Marouk's assistant, Yuta, was genetically designed to carry out a vendetta from the old clan wars, or die trying.
NOTE -- Nancy Parsons was Coach Beulah Balbricker in the "Porky's" Movies!
