Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the designers find their materials for their first task of the season?

Answer: In their apartments

In the first week of the competition, fifteen designers checked into their new apartments in the Atlas building in New York City's fashion district. Upon their arrival, they were told by Heidi and Tim that their first challenge would begin immediately.

They would need to return to their apartments and, in fifteen minutes, take their materials from what they found there-- anything. Keith Michael won the challenge by adapting a curtain into a simple dress while Stacey Estrella was the first cut for ruining a shower curtain.
2. In week three, the designers were told to create an outfit using which 'accessory' as inspiration?

Answer: Dog

During the second week of the competition, the designers paired up to create lavish evening gowns for none other than Miss U.S.A. 2006, Tara Conner, who needed an outfit for that portion of her upcoming Miss Universe pageant. The winning dress was from Kayne Gillaspie, an unsurprising selection since he came into the competition as a pageant designer.

The losing dress was by Malan Breton, who was cut. In week three, the designers were informed that they would be working with dogs to design an garment (and the story behind it) for their supposed owners as well as matching outfits for the dog itself. Uli Herzner's was determined to be the winner while Katherine Gerdes, a snowboard instructor from Minnesota, made too simple a dress for the judges and was sent home.
3. Which designer was disqualified from the competition in week 4?

Answer: Keith Michael

Week four was punctuated by the elimination of two designers, the first being Keith Michael who was disqualified from the competition when he was found to not only be in possession of fashion books (which are against the rules of the show) but for leaving the set for a prolonged time.

This put a small wrench in things as the task this week involved working in teams of three to design an outfit for Macy's INC line to be sold for under $100. His teammates, still seeing his vision through, came in second place to Angela Keslar's winning design. Bonnie Dominguez was cut for missing the mark on a companion piece for the existing line.
4. In week five, the designers had to make an outfit to modernize the look of a fashion icon. The losing designer was stuck with which icon?

Answer: Cher

The designers were surprised this week to discover that, at random, the models would be picking the designers they wanted to work with. The models would then have the chance to choose one of ten different fashion icons ranging from Audrey Hepburn to Marilyn Monroe to Madonna and the designer needed to modernize the signature look for the runway.

The winning design was Mychael Knight's-- he received Pam Grier and executed it perfectly according to the judges. The losing design was by Bradley Baumkirchner who, receiving Cher, did not know enough about the icon to be able to construct something worthy enough of her image.
5. In the sixth week of the show, the designers traveled to which state to collect materials for their challenges?

Answer: New Jersey

Driving out of New York City and into Newark in the sixth week, the designers were brought to a waste management facility where they were told to make use of all-recycled goods to create their garments. These proved to be difficult materials because they were not as stretchable as regular fabric. On the runway, Mychael Knight won his second challenge in a row, incorporating several different elements into the design and wowing the judges; Jeffrey Sebelia, who coloured his garment, ran a close second. Alison Kelly, who used paper to create too simple a garment, was sent home.
6. The seventh week brought in new models-- the designers' mothers and sisters. Whose mother ended up wearing the winning outfit?

Answer: Uli's

Uli's mother's outfit, designed by Vincent Libretti, ended up getting the top honours at the challenge because it was simple, sleek, and stylish. It ended up beating out all the rest to the surprise of the other designers who, already, needed to design for a relative other than their own.

The bottom two ended up being Jeffrey Sebelia, who designed an outfit against Angela's mother's wishes, and Robert Best, whose basic and unflattering design for Vincent's sister ended up getting him sent home quite quickly.
7. In week eight the designers discovered that they were jet-setters when they made garments for themselves and flew to what international city?

Answer: Paris

The designers were informed that their models would not be needed in week eight because they would be modelling their own garments, creating jet-setting designs for themselves. They then had to justify their outfits on the runway before they were told that they would be putting the clothes to the ultimate test, wearing them on a sixteen hour flight to Paris, France, where they would be judged by Catherine Malandrino at their new studio at Parsons Paris. Angela Keslar was eliminated upon their arrival. In Paris, the six remaining designers were given an inspirational walking tour and told that they would have time to sketch ideas for a haute couture gown before creating it with 300 Euros.

The gown was judged by Malandrino before being shipped back to New York City for their typical runway show.

Here, Vincent Libretti was given the lowest score.
8. In week ten, L'Oreal sponsored a challenge which brought how many eliminated designers back into the competition?

Answer: Two

In week ten the final five designers were shocked to find that previously-eliminated contestants Angela Keslar and Vincent Libretti would be back in action as competitors for the next challenge, the designing of a black and white cocktail dress. The designs, which used the same colour palette across the board, would need to use different designs and silhouettes to stand out.

In addition, any fabric they bought needed to be used-- no scraps. Laura Bennett won the challenge by creating a baby doll dress, outside her usual style, and modifying it for a younger consumer. Since she won, Angela and Vincent could not stay in the competition (as their remaining in was reliant on their winning the challenge). Kayne Gillaspie was also sent home for not utilizing white in his design, leaving four designers in the competition.
9. How many designers were sent to Olympus Fashion Week in this season?

Answer: Four

For their final challenge the final four were brought to the offices of "Elle" magazine and told that they would be given total creative control. With $250 they needed to create a garment epitomizing their style and upcoming collection. Then they needed to create a one-sheet and attribute three keywords to the look. Uli Herzner won the challenge with her 'fun, life, and adventure' themed outfit, a patterned dress in a fit unlike her earlier ones. Laura Bennett was also let into the finale. When the final two, Mychael Knight and Jeffrey Sebelia, were left onstage, they were both told that they would be going to Olympus Fashion week as well; there would be four designers in the final runway show.
10. Which designer was the winner of "Project Runway" season three?

Answer: Jeffrey Sebelia

With two months and a total of $8,000 to spend on twelve outfits, the final four designers created their collections for New York's Olympus Fashion Week in Bryant Park. Upon arriving, the designers prepared and presented. Mychael Knight, whose urban safari collection was scattered at best, came in fourth. Laura Bennett received third place and Uli Herzner took the runner-up position.

In the end it was polarizing designer Jeffrey Sebelia who produced a strong, Japanese-horror-inspired collection (averse to his earlier styles on the show) and won the mentorship with Macy's INC designs, the $100,000 to start his business, the Saturn Sky Roadster, and the spread in "Elle" magazine.
