Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To test the designers on the basics, what was the garment of choice designed in the first week of the L.A.-based competition?

Answer: Red carpet dress

For the first time in the series, the designers brought together for "Project Runway" were met by Heidi and Tim in Los Angeles, the setting for the show this season. For their first task, the sixteen designers settled in and met Tim Gunn on the red carpet for the Emmys; they had to make a gown to wear for an awards ceremony. With Lindsay Lohan as their guest judge, the designers brought their A-game and met their new models.

After the first judging, avant-garde designer Ari Fish went home for, essentially, opting to make a garment that definitely wasn't a dress.
2. The second challenge of the competition had the designers make a garment for what then-pregnant supermodel?

Answer: Rebecca Romijn

Now introduced to the pressures of the competition, the remaining fifteen designers were met with a slightly-more-complicated task, creating a form-fitting outfit for a pregnant Rebecca Romijn. For this challenge, the designers had to form garments around models posing as pregnant (with fake stomach pads). With two days to make the garment, it was Malvin Vien who went home on a design he referred to as 'a chicken giving birth to an egg'. You can imagine.
3. For the first time on "Project Runway", in week three, a contestant was eliminated despite which of these?

Answer: Being responsible for the winning garment

In week three, the designers were told to embrace California beach culture by making an outfit to reflect surf style. In addition, they needed to work in teams of two for the first time to accomplish their task. Halfway through the task, they were also told to create a second, more avant-garde look to compliment the original, and both would walk down the runway. Mitchell Hall, a team leader, gave his partner, Ra'mon Lawrence Coleman, all credit for both designs; Ra'mon won while Mitchell, close to elimination in the previous two challenges, struck out.
4. Tommy Hilfiger and Eva Longoria were called in to critique outfits in challenge five, all of which were made with what unconventional material?

Answer: Paper

In the show's fifth challenge (following a series of outfits for their own models in week four), the designers headed to the headquarters for the "Los Angeles Times" to pick up their materials for the week-- stacks and stacks of newspaper. Creating garments with newspaper, muslin (for structure), and paint, they paraded their fragile looks on the runway.

Despite several designers making heavily-patterned looks, it was Irina's textured piece that won the challenge. Johnny Sakalis was sent home for an uninspired piece, and after claiming that his previously-made garment, disliked by Tim Gunn, was ruined in an instant by a sputtering iron.
5. During week six, the designers used film genres as inspiration. Which genre was not featured?

Answer: Horror

The designers met with Tim Gunn on a studio backlot to discover that they would be making designs based on inspiring movie genres: Action/Adventure, Western, Film Noir, Sci-Fi, and Period Piece. With two days, they were considered to go above and beyond with their garments, and Nicolas Putvinski was able to add his aesthetic into an 'ice queen' dress.

Others were considered underwhelming and lacking spirit (according to guest judges John Varvatos and Zoe Glassner). Ra'mon Lawrence Coleman went home on the back of his poorly-constructed, reptilian sci-fi outfit.
6. In challenge seven, the designers had to create looks exclusively for Macy's. What colour had to be featured?

Answer: Blue

This time, the designers had to make an ordinarily-depressing colour, blue, into the star of a new garment to be sold exclusively through Macy's department stores. After pitching to a design specialist, five designs were chosen to be made and the contestants had to work in teams of two to bring them to life.

The winner, Irina Shabayeva, did not win immunity; instead she got the opportunity to make a dress to be sold in the Macy's holiday line. Louise Black was sent home for not appealing to a younger crowd.
7. In the eighth challenge, the designers received temporary, new models, all paraded out in wedding dresses. What were these models?

Answer: Divorcees

To the designers' surprise, they needed to select a divorcee in challenge eight and use their old wedding dress to make something hip, new, and fierce to wear back out in the dating world. While some models had elaborate gowns from their weddings, others had slender ones with little usable fabric; the designers were also allowed to buy a small amount of additional materials to add in.

In less than a day, Gordana Gehlhausen won the challenge with a slender, textured dress while Rodney Epperson was eliminated for missing the mark.
8. In their tenth challenge, the final seven designers had to choose an inspirational location. Which was not one of them?

Answer: Tokyo

Meeting with judge Michael Kors in his Rodeo Drive boutique, the final seven designers were told to find inspiration from a unique location somewhere around the world and they were given seven different spots ranging from Palm Beach to Santa Fe to Saint-Tropez. Nicolas Putvinski was eliminated for his Greece-inspired garment which, allegedly, did not harken back to Greece enough to pique the judges' interest; Irina took her third challenge win with her Aspen-inspired look.
9. The final five designers were told to get their inspiration from works in what famous Los Angeles building/attraction for their final pre-Bryant Park task?

Answer: The Getty Center

In this final task, the five remaining designers were given a chance to enjoy the surroundings at the opulent Getty Center in Los Angeles. Here, with their models, they needed to find inspiration for a new, single outfit to propel them into the final three heading to Bryant Park for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

After judging, the final male contestant, home-designer Christopher Straub, was first to be eliminated; he was followed by Gordana Gehlhausen whose painting-inspired dress was considered beautiful, but too safe.

This resulted in the first-ever three-woman final show in "Project Runway".
10. Who was the winner of "Project Runway" season six?

Answer: Irina Shabayeva

After ten weeks, the final three designers spent $9,000 each to make a twelve-piece collection to show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Bryant Park, New York. Upon their arrival, the women were told that they would end up needing to create an accompanying thirteenth look with a formerly-eliminated designer by their side.

In the end, Carol Hannah Whitfield and Althea Harper placed third and second, respectively. It was New York designer Irina Shabayeva and her all-black collection taking home the $100,000 grand prize, spread in "Marie Claire" magazine, and a trip for two to Paris.
