Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For their first task, the designers of this season revisited a task from the very first season of the show. What materials did they use?

Answer: Items purchased from a grocery store

For their first challenge, the sixteen designers departed from their new residence at Atlas New York and followed Tim Gunn to a grocery store, Gristedes, to meet their guest judge, season one contestant Austin Scarlett. For this task, they had to emulate the designers from the first season's first task by purchasing all of their materials and thinking out of the box with $75. Kelli won by dying and bleaching coffee filters and vacuum bags while many other contestants used very obvious material choices to make their garments (eg. tablecloths, shower curtains). Jerry Tam was eliminated for his shower curtain jacket. In the following week, the designers used green, naturally made fabrics to make their outfits, but their models (also the clients of their prospective cocktail dresses) got to pick the fabrics alone.
2. During week three, the designers had the opportunity to garner inspiration from different parts of New York City at night. Which was not one of the locations visited by any of the designers?

Answer: Empire State Building

Although designers have been inspired by New York City's beautiful architecture in past seasons, this was the first time in which the designers were given a tour at night; designers were put into groups and sent to one of four different Manhattan locales to take photos and find inspirations for a women's outfit.

It was also the first task in which the designers bought their own materials from Mood. Kenley's uniquely-structured outfit, inspired by a tiled wall, won the challenge (and immunity) while Emily, who sewed a corsage onto a black dress, was eliminated.
3. During week four, the designers met with Apolo Ohno and were told to make outfits for which of these?

Answer: A Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony

For their fourth challenge, the designers met with Apolo Ohno of the U.S. Olympic Speed Skating Team at the Armory Training Center. Tasked with creating new looks for the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, many of the designers had a tremendous amount of trouble creating athletic/active garments.

In fact, only a small handful made adaptable garments which proudly showed off the American ideal. Korto won with her design though she was closely followed up by Joe. Jennifer's self-proclaimed surrealist style did not sit will with the judges, especially considering the nature of the task, and she was cut.
4. During their sixth challenge, the designers made costume outfits for drag queens. What famous 'drag race' host was the guest judge?

Answer: RuPaul

To begin week six, the designers were surprised that their models for the week would be none other than drag queens introduced by season four contestant Chris March. This time, the garments needed to portray queen personas with heightened theatricality and costume aesthetic.

While some designers excelled with unique outfits accentuating all the right spots, some fell to the bottom with the same-old issues as their previous designs. While Keith was criticized for consistently using fringe, Daniel was eliminated for falling flat and muting his queen too much.
5. In their eighth week, the designers met with Diane von Furstenberg and were told to make a design inspired by her collection which, in turn, was inspired by what film?

Answer: "A Foreign Affair"

In week eight the designers went to the meat packing district and met with famous designer Diane von Furstenberg, their guest judge for this task. This time, they had to design a piece which could fit into her own "Foreign Affair"-inspired collection inspired by Marlene Dietrich using fabrics from her storeroom.

The winning design would subsequently be sold to American Express cardholders. Most of the designers created garments related to different foreign cities and Leanne, who combined the styles throughout, won the challenge. Stella was unable to pull past her general aesthetic and was eliminated.
6. In week nine, two designers were eliminated after creating outfits inspired by which of the following?

Answer: A zodiac sign

The final eight designers were paired up this week, but with the past eight eliminated designers. Their goal was to choose a zodiac sign attributed to one of them and create a design involving its traits, colours, and images. When their designs were finished, to their surprise, the designers had to showcase them during an exclusive party at the American Museum of Natural History for past designers who competed on "Project Runway".

The winning design, Jerell's, was chosen by them. The judges, however, eliminated both Terri (for her Leo design) and Blayne (for his Libra design), leaving six.
7. The final six were asked to make designs for specific clients: recent college graduates (and their mothers). Who was eliminated for making their contestant (according to the judges) look twenty years older?

Answer: Joe

In week ten, the final six were given a challenge in which they had to appeal to two clients-- a recent college graduate looking for a professional yet modern look, and their mother. Designers tried to incorporate the girls' future ventures in their aesthetic and while they had to appeal to the girls, they also had to make sure it passed muster for their protective mothers. Jerell's was voted the best because it made the client look contemporary and professional (while still young); Joe's was considered too aging and was eliminated, leaving five.
8. The final five, creating outfits for their fellow competitors, had to make garments inspired by music. Which genre was not included in the task?

Answer: Rap

In week eleven, all of the designers were paired up amongst each other and given specific styles of music to influence their new looks. Kenley needed a pop outfit, Leanne needed a hip hop outfit, Korto needed a country outfit, Suede needed a punk outfit, and Jerell needed a rock and roll outfit.

When the designers hit the runway (with guest judge LL Cool J), Kenley firecely defended her outfit choice but it was Suede's poor rock and roll outfit (for Jerell) that looked too pedestrian and got him sent home from the competition.
9. What garment stood between the final four designers and presenting at Fashion Week?

Answer: Wedding dress

After creating outfits inspired by nature found in the new York City Botanical Gardens, the final four designers were told by the judges that they would all have one more opportunity to make it to Fashion Week. They would all need to make their twelve-piece collections to show, but only three of them could appear at Bryant Park. To help decide, the judges asked each of them to make a wedding dress inspired by their aesthetic and collection. Upon arriving back in New York they were also told to make an accompanying bridesmaid dress in a single day (and $150).

After showing these on the runway at Parsons, Jerell was sent home and the other three designers were allowed to continue on.
10. Who became the winner of "Project Runway's" fifth season?

Answer: Leanne

With $8,000 and two months, the designers were told to create twelve-piece collections to present at New York's Bryant Park Fashion Week. After Jerell was eliminated during the final runway, they were told to cut two garments and present a ten-piece selection instead. Finally, the day was upon the three finalists and between Kenley's self-painted collection, Korto's ethnic-inspired line, and Leanne's wave-themed selection, the judges presented Leanne's light-coloured, highly-pleated collection with the grand prize. Leanne became the fifth winner of "Project Runway" taking with her a spread in "Elle" magazine, a 2009 Saturn Vue, a contract with BlueFly.com, and $100,000.
