Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known as "Yellow Eyes", this demon killed Mary Winchester.

Answer: Azazel

Played by Fredric Lehne, Azazel was a powerful demon, shown visually by his yellow eyes. Azazel killed Mary Winchester, pinning her to the ceiling in Sam's nursery and then setting the house on fire. Jess, Sam's girlfriend, was later killed in the same way, on Azazel's orders. Mary's death created a lifelong obsession in her husband, John, to find and kill "Yellow Eyes", and he raised his two children as hunters.

Along with several other infants, Azazel fed six-month-old Sam demon blood, which later gave him psychic abilities. These "special", chosen babies grew up to have powers including super strength and telekinesis. In season 2, it was believed these children would lead demonic armies; it was later revealed that Azazel also wanted to find a suitable vessel for Lucifer once released from the cage.

Azazel's goal was to open the gate to hell, thereby freeing hundreds of demons, including Lilith, who would break the 66 seals and free Lucifer. He was successful in doing this, but was ultimately killed by Dean using the Colt gun in the season 2 finale.
2. A fallen archangel, trapped in a cage to protect humanity.

Answer: Lucifer

Played by Mark Pellegrino, Lucifer was a fallen angel who was imprisoned within a cage in hell. He first appeared in season 4, but often appeared as a hallucination for Sam, such as in season 7.

Lucifer was freed when the demon Lilith broke the 66 seals that held him prisoner. As the last remaining "special child", Sam was chosen to be his vessel, though he needed to consent before Lucifer could possess him. Dean was chosen to be the true vessel for Michael, another archangel and Lucifer's brother, who wanted to defeat Lucifer.

Lucifer rebelled against God after refusing to bow down to man, God's favourite creation. He wanted to bring about the Apocalypse to cleanse Earth of humans. Demons consider Lucifer to be their father.
3. An angel who swallowed thousands of souls, then claimed to be God.

Answer: Castiel

Castiel shifted from being a supporting character and friend to Sam and Dean to an antagonist in season 6. After the apocalypse was prevented in the previous season, Castiel led a civil war in heaven against the angel Raphael. To do so, he teamed up with the King of Hell - the demon Crowley - to collect as many souls as possible, to be used as ammunition. Their bargain was to split the souls of the monsters 50/50; however, when their agreement failed, Castiel ingested all of the souls.

Castiel became immensely powerful and arrogant, claiming himself to be God and insisting that others bow before him. However, among the souls inside him were ancient monsters called Leviathans, which were too strong to contain.

A fan favourite, Castiel was played by Misha Collins and was introduced in season 4.
4. Often possessing a young girl, this demon broke the 66 seals.

Answer: Lilith

Lilith was the first ever demon, created by Lucifer. She was freed when Azazel opened the door to hell at the end of season 2. She was helped by Ruby, a demon, to break the 66 seals that kept Lucifer imprisoned in his cage. Dean's torture of souls in hell, as a righteous man, was the first seal broken. Lilith's death, by the hand of Sam, was the final seal.

Lilith, recognisable by her white eyes, possessed a number of young girls and women. She was played by a range of actresses, including Sierra McCormick, Katherine Boecher, and Rachel Pattee.
5. Hell's top torturer, a demon who both tortured and taught Dean to torture.

Answer: Alastair

Dean was taken to hell a year after making a pact with a demon to save Sam's life. There, he spent four months (which was the equivalent of forty years in hell) suffering under the care of Alastair, played by Christopher Heyerdahl.

Alastair gave Dean the choice to leave the "rack" after being tortured daily, if he would torture other souls in his place. Dean rejected the offer every day for thirty years until he could no longer cope, leading him to torture souls for ten years before he was freed from hell by Castiel and other angels.

Dean himself later tortured Alastair for information about angel deaths. Sam later killed Alastair using the powers he gained by drinking demon blood.
6. A demon-killing demon who manipulated Sam into drinking huge amounts of demon blood.

Answer: Ruby

Ruby was played by actresses Katie Cassidy and Genevieve Padalecki (Jared's real-life wife). She was introduced as being "not like other demons", fighting alongside them and helping Sam and Dean with her demon-killing knife. Ruby used to be a human witch before she became a demon.

Ruby encouraged Sam to drink demon blood to strengthen his powers. Sam believed he was saving the people possessed by demons by exorcising them quickly and easily. While Sam trusted Ruby, Dean did not, and resented the fact that Sam chose to trust her over him.

It was ultimately revealed that Ruby was secretly working for Lilith to break Lucifer free from hell. Dean killed Ruby with her own knife after she helped Lilith break the final seal. Sam, realising that he had been tricked by her, held Ruby back so that Dean could stab her.
7. A Leviathan who took over the name and body of a powerful entrepreneur.

Answer: Dick

After Castiel ingested all the souls from Purgatory, he realised that there were also Leviathans inside him. After the Leviathans escaped from Castiel, they set about infiltrating powerful American companies. Their leader took the place of the billionaire Dick Roman, head of Richard Roman Enterprises and SucroCorp. We never learn the Leviathan's real name.

Leviathans, apparently existing since the beginning of time, predate angels, demons, and humans. Their goals include turning humans into passive, non-resisting food sources and exterminating other predators that feed on and use humans, such as vampires and demons.

Dick Roman is played by James Patrick Stuart and is the main protagonist in season 7. He is smart, ruthless, and power-hungry. Dick kills Bobby, long-time mentor and father figure to Sam and Dean. Dean later kills Dick in the season finale with the help of Castiel, while Sam releases Kevin Tran.
8. An angel intent on making Dean into a vessel for Michael.

Answer: Zachariah

Played by Kurt Fuller, Zachariah was introduced in season 4. He played a key role in the angel's plot to allow Lucifer's freedom from the cage, so that Michael could defeat him. This put him at odds with Sam and Dean, who did not want to act as vessels for the archangels, likely destroying each other in the process.

Dean kills Zachariah after the latter manipulates the Winchesters' half-brother Adam, and attempts to use him to trap Dean. Zachariah's actions led to Adam being trapped in the cage with Michael and Lucifer, even when Sam is rescued.
9. The Mother of All, who created every monster on Earth.

Answer: Eve

Eve, played by Julia Maxwell in season 6, was the mother of all monsters, including vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters. Eve loved and cherished her "children", whom she created. Her first creations were called alphas - these are the ancestors of the monster races. She also created new monsters after she left Purgatory, such as the Jefferson Starships - a term coined by Dean for vampire/wraith hybrids. Her goal was to create the perfect monster that could fool even seasoned hunters.

Eve was enraged that her children were being massacred in huge numbers by Crowley in his search for the door to Purgatory. She was killed after biting Dean, unaware that he had previously swallowed phoenix ash, the only thing that could harm her.
10. The King of Hell with the catchphrase "Hello, boys".

Answer: Crowley

Crowley worked his way up to being the King of Hell after starting off as a lowly crossroads demon. He was born Fergus McLeod, the son of a witch (Rowena) in 17th-century Scotland. Played by Mark Sheppard, he was first introduced in season 5.

Crowley shifts between aiding and hindering Sam and Dean, doing whatever suits his own motives. For example, he helps them find the rings of the horsemen in order to imprison Lucifer in his cage again, but he also kidnaps Lisa and Ben to stop Dean from hunting him.

Another fan favourite, Crowley is charming but manipulative, witty but cruel. Ultimately, Crowley does whatever he can to save his own skin.
