Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season saw two tribes initially divided by which criteria?

Answer: Age

Twenty new contestants headed into the wilds of Nicaragua already split up into two groups of ten, but none of them were actually split until uniting to meet Jeff on the beach. The tribes, this season, were split by age with anyone aged 40 and older on the Espada tribe and anyone aged 30 and younger on La Flor.
This was the sixth "Survivor" season to commence with twenty castaways (the previous one being "Heroes vs. Villains"). "Survivor: Panama" also had an age twist back in season 12 when castaways were split into four tribes divided by age and gender.
2. What new game mechanic, appearing in this season, was introduced to the tribes on the first day of the competition?

Answer: Medallion of Power

The first order of business, even before actually splitting the teams, involved Jeff informing the castaways of the Medallion of Power, a new game mechanic that would allow them to give their tribe a leg up from the get-go. The Medallion, hidden in a lagoon at the introduction beach, could be grabbed by one castaway but would not be an individual reward.

It was ultimately found up in a tree by Brenda, who brought it with her to the La Flor tribe when it was properly split. The Medallion, used during challenges, provided an advantage depending on the circumstances but when used, the Medallion was handed off to the other team.

It was retired after four episodes. This said, in the first episode, La Flor had the option of keeping the Medallion or trading it for a flint and fishing supplies. Whatever option they took, the other team took the remainder. (They took the fishing gear.)
3. How many hidden Immunity Idols appeared in this season?

Answer: Two

Both idols were hidden at the original La Flor and Espada camps and both were found within the first ten days by different groups. The first was found by Marty and Jill on the Espada tribe (and held by Marty as an insurance plan going into the inevitable merge); the second was found by NaOnka and Brenda at La Flor.

In both cases, the teams were given clues kept cryptic by rebus puzzles, but both were within a short distance of their Tree Mail locations. Both idols remained in play until the final possible Tribal Council at which point they were used, collectively, to negate a single vote.
4. The Tribal Switch, which occurred on Day 12, combined members of La Flor and Espada at random as determined by the drawing of buffs.

Answer: False

On Day 12, after four Tribal Councils, teams were told to drop their buffs going into the challenge and to draw rocks for new captains. Brenda drew the yellow rock, becoming the leader for La Flor, while Holly drew the blue rock to lead Espada. This allowed Brenda to take three older tribemates from Espada while Holly was allowed to take four younger tribemates from La Flor. Additionally, Jeff informed the tribes that the Medallion of Power would no longer be usable going forward.
5. On Day 15, tribes faced a double elimination (one castaway per team). That said, the teams still competed for a reward. When did the winning team celebrate this victory?

Answer: At Tribal Council

On Day 15, the tribes headed to their Immunity Challenge a day or two earlier than normal to discover that they were not competing for team immunity. Instead, both tribes would be going to Tribal Council to vote somebody out of the game with one person per tribe holding solo immunity (those immune castaways would also fight for their team's reward that day: a feast they would enjoy at Tribal Council while the losing team cast their votes). Ultimately, Jill and Holly won the challenge leading Kelly B. and Yve to be eliminated from La Flor and Espada, respectively (and leaving thirteen in the game).
6. What name did the final twelve tribemates give to the merged tribe?

Answer: Libertad

On Day 19, the two teams merged as a single tribe with twelve members, uniting on Espada's beach to combine their efforts. Under the name 'Libertad', the tribe immediately turned their efforts to an individual focus, recalibrating their alliances based on not only their previous tribes, but their starting tribes. Both La Flor and Espada went into the merge with six tribemates, but based on the original old vs. young division, only four original 'old' players were left against six 'young' players.
7. On Day 25, the tribe returned from a Reward Challenge to find that what had happened to most of their belongings?

Answer: They'd set on fire

After a wet and rainy Day 25 Reward Challenge in which the winning five tribemates had the chance to go volcano surfing and have a picnic on Cerro Negro, the losing five returned to camp to find that the three large, wooden chests they'd used to store their food and supplies had set on fire in their absence, destroying the bulk of their rations, implements, and roofing.

The aim was to barricade the fire to protect it from the rain in their absence. Ultimately it left the final ten with approximately a cup of rice a day per person.
8. How many castaways voluntarily quit the game on Day 28?

Answer: Two

Following Brenda's elimination on Day 27, events escalated. The tribemates headed back to the Libertad camp just in time to hunker down for the worst rainstorm thus far. The castaways went to a Reward Challenge on Day 28, but the events led NaOnka and Kelly S. to suggest they wanted to quit.

It led to Jeff declaring an out-of-turn Tribal Council meeting at which both NaOnka (who gave her hidden Immunity Idol to Chase) and Kelly to quit. Their torches were snuffed out and they were sent to the jury without the need for a vote.
9. The final prize given in a Reward Challenge this season was a car.

Answer: False

While many earlier seasons capped off regular Reward Challenges with a big-deal Ford prize, the final featured in this season involved phone calls from home/visits with loved ones from Sprint. This season also opted not to feature a Survivor Auction, typically a staple of earlier seasons, though this was potentially removed due to the earlier double-quit.
Sprint, seemingly the highest-profile sponsor of the season, also put forth a $100,000 'player of the season' prize. The votes for this went to Jane, who was eliminated in sixth place.
10. Which castaway became the Sole Survivor and million dollar winner of "Survivor: Nicaragua"?

Answer: Jud "Fabio"

After thirty-nine days in Nicaragua, the field of twenty castaways was winnowed down to only three in the final Tribal Council in which the jury grilled Sash, Chase, and Fabio on their activities during the competition. It all ended with the reading of the final vote in front of a live studio audience during which Fabio won the million dollar prize and the title of Sole Survivor with five votes (to Chase's four and Sash's zero).
