Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the three tribes met at the reward and immunity challenge in "Survivor 51" episode 5, it had a twist. What was it?

Answer: Only the winning tribe would gain immunity, the other two tribes would go to Tribal Council

The combined Reward / Immunity Challenge occurred early in episode 5. However, only the winning tribe earned immunity; the two losing tribes would go to Tribal Council and eliminate a tribe member each. The task involved retrieving buoys from various points in the ocean, and then transporting these buoys on a flat tray connected by ropes to three tribe members who had to walk together on opposite sides of an obstacle course. Toka made short work of the task and won easily, sending Savu and Dina to Tribal Council. Toka won a basket of pastries as their winnings.
2. One person on the winning tribe had to visit another tribe and give a tribe member what?

Answer: An 'allliance builder' - An extra vote for someone on the visited tribe

Back at camp, the promised basket of pastries was accompanied by a note saying one must not partake and go on a journey instead. Since trips away from camp this season have previously brought advantages, three people volunteered to go, but Maggie's name was drawn from a random draw.

Just as she was about to get into the boat, she was given a note. She had to go to either of the other tribes, and she was given an 'alliance builder', an extra vote to give to someone on the other tribe. Maggie went to Dina. Maggie had a plan.
3. In season 50, we saw a Blood Moon twist. This season, we saw the emergence of a 'blood idol'. What significance did it have?

Answer: Fake Immunity Idol

Lewis recognised that he was on the bottom of his tribe. He could see that Kilby was trying hard to find cracks in the original Savu Four and was making enough inroads to push all the pressure on Lewis if they had to go to Tribal Council next.

"Once we lose, I know I'm completely and utterly doomed. Whatever you want, I'm down. I have to come up with something. Everyone thinks I have an advantage from Exile, so, at this point, I'm just buying into the mystery."

In a desperate move, he showed Sharonda an unusually shaped ring. He said it was a blood idol, and that if he was voted out, then she was eliminated as well. Sharonda is sceptical, but Cristian revealed Lewis has already told the rest of the tribe the personal origins of the ring, which had nothing to do with "Survivor".

*As viewers, I don't believe we are meant to see this as an abject failure on Lewis' part. Rather, we are meant to see it as a proactive left-field move by a player kicking and screaming to stay in the game.
4. Who did Maggie hand the advantage(s) to?

Answer: Lewis and Kilby

On Dina, the original Savu members were tight - no apparent crack in their alliance of four: Linnea, Sharonda, Cristian, and Eric. Kilby, through his incessant talking, had gained some trust with the ex-Savu four, leaving Lewis well and truly on the bottom. Three days on Exile Island plus an extra day being sick has torpedoed his social game, and he knew he was on the chopping block.

When Maggie visits, she dragged each member away from the tribe so she could have a one-on-one with them (smart!) She could see that the Savu alliance was strong, so she not only handed over the alliance builder's extra vote to Lewis; she handed over her own extra vote advantage to Kilby on the condition that the two boys voted for Linnea (no reason was given why Linnea was selected). This would make the expected vote four votes for Lewis and four for Linnea. This would give Lewis a fighting chance.
5. On Savu, there were two ex-Savu members and two original Toka tribe members. How did the vote go?

Answer: 3-1 Alexis

Episode 5 started with the four Savu members, after returning from Tribal Council, bonding over sharing their personal stories with each other. Each had gone through tragedy in their lives; their stories were heartfelt, and they became very close as a result, which made their upcoming Tribal Council difficult. Each had to vote off somebody they cared about. (Interestingly, we as viewers did not hear Jelly's story - Will this be revealed deeper into the season?)

Jelly was conflicted, as all four previous eliminations voted off women, and she did not want to extend that run, but neither did she want to turn on her fellow Black players. Ori was able to protect Alexis in the last vote when Jenna went home, but if he did the same now, he would shatter the Helicopter Alliance (which Alexis had no knowledge of). Devin tried to pitch an Ori blindside at Alexis so she feels safe (and he does not have to use his extra vote). Alexis reciprocated, hoping to remove Devin with Ori's help and a favourable rock draw after a 2-2 vote.

In the end, the Helicopter Alliance won 3-1, and the audience was saddened to see Alexis eliminated at such an early stage.
6. On Dina, there were four ex-Savu and two ex-Toka tribe members. There was a deadlock on the first vote. How did the second vote pan out?

Answer: 4-4 deadlock (Lewis and Linnea)

The second Tribal Council with Dina was explosive. Kilby disclosed to the four ex-Savu members that he had been given an extra vote from Maggie. What was unclear at this point was whether Kilby would pocket the extra vote and vote with the Savu Four to oust Lewis or whether he would honour Maggie's plan to oust Linnea.

The Savu Four were not intimidated, as this would only make it 4-3 at worst, but when the votes were read, it was Lewis 4, Linnea 4. The Savu Four realised there were two extra votes in play. A re-vote yielded the same result. Panic set in the Savu Four. Jeff explained the four safe tribe members must now reach a consensus and vote either Lewis or Linnea out. If they could not reach consensus, Lewis and Linnea would be safe, and the other four would draw rocks to send one of them home.

Kilby declared he was going to rocks for Lewis because Lewis went to bat for him at every previous vote, and he had a 75% chance of survival regardless. The Savu Four pleaded with Kilby to change his mind, but Kilby was steadfast. And there it was: the crack in the ex-Savu members' seemingly impenetrable armour. The three 'safe' members were not prepared to risk a 25% chance of elimination to save Linnea. Through tears, consensus was achieved, and Linnea became the sixth consecutive woman voted out of "Survivor 51". Individual survival defeated tribal loyalty.
7. In episode 6, one tribe member had to go on a summit. What was significant about the three tribe members chosen?

Answer: Each of the three were original Savu members

Taking a journey in "Survivor", there is an expectation that there is a reward to be earned and also a risk or obstacle to confront. A traveller's separation from their tribe means valuable social time away from the tribe, often puts a target on the traveller's back, and when they get back, their stories are frequently not believed, whether they are telling the truth or not.

It was interesting how each of the three tribes chose their traveller:
At Savu. All three remaining members showed an interest in attending the summit, with Ori selected by random draw.

At Toka, Kristen put up her hand, which was fine with the tribe as she was the only ex-Savu member and was a likely vote-off next Tribal Council. However, Mike put up his hand. While it is expected that the chosen one will need to be a negotiator, Mike still did not admit that he handles negotiations in his role as a VP in the New York Yankees. However, Mike has had a poor social game, which has annoyed his tribe mates, especially Thien An. She stepped in and negated Mike's interest. Mike accepted this meekly, and Kristen went unopposed

At Dina, they had a random name draw, but Cristian, who held the draw cloth, manipulated the outcome by keeping his thumb on Kilby's, Lewis', and his own name. Sharonda was chosen.

All three travellers met on a neutral beach and were ex-Savu players who were all expected to do well in the game. They wasted no time filling each other in, especially with the mechanics of the shock of Linnea's departure. Meanwhile, back on Dina, Cristian had seen from that elimination that the "Savu-strong" was apparently nonviable. He had manipulated the summit vote so that he could discuss the possibility of working with Kilby and Lewis in the future as the merge was looming, and if there was a Dina Tribal Council that night, he could be on the right side of the boat by blindsiding Eric or Sharonda.
8. The three travellers were faced with a decision point at the summit. One person got a 'tethered idol'. What did the others receive?

Answer: A plate of food for each of their tribes

Two plates of ribs and corn were provided for two of the three travellers to take back to their respective tribes. The third got a tethered idol but had to spend the night on Exile Island to earn it. The tethered part means the holder can use it to save only the other two travellers. Sharonda subtly maneuvered Kristen to take the tethered idol; Kristen, a self-confessed controlling person, happily accepted. Sharonda and Ori returned to their tribes to eat.

Kristen cheerfully made use of those survival skills she learned, making 24 years' worth of "Survivor" audition tapes (which, as viewers, we saw). Additionally, she found out that the tethered idol becomes a full idol should Ori and Sharonda be voted out. (Food for thought)

Interestingly, when all three returned to their tribes, not one of them mentioned the idol at all. Some of the non-travellers were suspicious.
9. Not all of the Tethered Idol's power was revealed initially. What extra power did it hold?

Answer: Became a 'full' Immunity Idol if the other two on this journey had been eliminated

Additionally, she found out that the tethered idol becomes a full idol if Ori and Sharonda are voted out. Food for thought; both Ori and Sharonda returned to their camp thinking that Kristen had their backs and that they were protected. Kristen could easily do the reverse and vote them off without playing the idol, giving herself a full-blooded Immunity Idol.

Interestingly, when all three returned to their tribes, not one of them mentioned the idol at all. Some of the stay-at-homes were suspicious.
10. Savu lost the challenge, which meant one of the three Helicopter Alliance members had to vote one of their own off. Which of the following was played to try to save themselves from being eliminated?

Answer: A Shot in The Dark

So now we (as viewers) found out why the Helicopter Alliance received so much airtime: with the exception of Sharonda, who is in Dina, the other three in the alliance must vote one of their alliance members out. Collectively, they were heartbroken. This was early in the game for it to be an individual's game, and the decision weighed heavily on them.

Devin had an extra vote, which was not mentioned (except in a Confessional). Jelly had an Immunity Idol. Over the course of the afternoon prior to Tribal Council, their individual games came out: Jelly said she had an idol (surprising Devin) and wasn't going to go home yet. Devin said he could not write Jelly's name down, and Ori vainly tried to turn Devin into blindsiding Jelly, but the bond between Devin and Jelly was too strong - they had been together since Day 1. All Ori could do was play his Shot in the Dark and lose his vote, which said he was "Not Safe". Ori was voted out 2-0. It was a sad sight to see one of this season's most promising players exit so early.

It also increased the intrigue surrounding Kristen's tethered idol - It lends itself to Kristen blind-siding Sharonda to increase the power of the idol.
