Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 9, teams completed tasks in which Dutch city?

Answer: Amsterdam

Setting out from their campsites at the Goanikontes Oasis outside of Swakopmund, Namibia, the final five teams needed to get themselves to the airport in Windhoek and fly to Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. After catching a five thousand mile flight (connecting through Johannesburg, South Africa), teams would be able to hop into a taxi and make their way to Jagershuis in the town of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, south of the capital, where they could nab their next clue outside.
2. Who completed the shoe search Road Block in the Netherlands in Leg 9?

Answer: Matt

Finding clues outside of Jagershuis, teams were presented with a Road Block ('Who's got a nice set of klompen?'). For this task, the selected team member needed to enter Jagershuis and, with a single wooden shoe, they needed to find the perfect match amongst hundreds of similar articles inside. Once they got the details just right, they could trade the pair to obtain their next clue envelope. For this task, team members also needed to change into provided costumes. Jenny, Tyler, Matt, Rochelle, and Blair put their best foot forward for this.
3. Throughout the ninth leg, teams rode which of these to navigate in The Netherlands?

Answer: Bikes

Leaving the Road Block, teams were instructed to pick up a pair of bikes and ride approximately ten kilometers along the Amstel River, on a ferry, and into the city of Amsterdam. Teams would proceed to use these bikes throughout the remainder of the leg, joining the locals as they navigated their way through the canal city.

But for this first stretch of biking, they needed to navigate their way to the Munttoren, a tower found where the Amstel River and the Singel Canal connect.
4. Which Detour task, 'Soak' or 'Shuffle', was completed by more teams in The Netherlands in Leg 9?

Answer: Soak

Reaching Munttoren, teams found a Detour. For this task, teams could either 'Soak' or 'Shuffle', and for both, teams had to bike to their task. In 'Soak', teams hopped into an electric-powered hot tub boat heading through Amsterdam's canals. While relaxing, they would need to find three rebus puzzles along the canals and use them to suss out the correct phrase ('Ice Skating Rink') which would result in their next clue.

In 'Shuffle', teams instead headed to an indoor shuffleboard hall to play sjoelen. Fifty-one points would result in a clue. Laura and Tyler, Jelani and Jenny, Hayley and Blair completed 'Soak'; Mike and Rochelle and Matt and Ashley completed 'Shuffle'.
5. Which team was last to arrive at the non-elimination Pit Stop in Leg 9?

Answer: Matt and Ashley

Completing their Detour options, teams were told to ride their bikes to their next Pit Stop, the ice skating rink at Museumplein where Phil would be waiting at the mat. Laura and Tyler took their second win in a row, this time winning a trip for two from Travelocity and heading to the city of Seoul, South Korea.

The recipient of this leg's Date Night award went to Jelani and Jenny, who claimed it with their Road Block clue. Matt and Ashley, who couldn't recover ground after the Road Block, were spared with a non-elimination leg.
6. To which Peruvian city did teams receive tickets in Leg 10?

Answer: Trujillo

Leaving the chilly city of Amsterdam, teams needed to make their way a third of the way around the globe to the city of Trujillo, Peru. Teams would have tickets available to them, arriving the following day, but were under no obligation to use them. As such, some teams arrived the evening before, leaving from Schiphol and arriving in time for the Festival de Fuerza in the city's Plaza des Armas.

In the morning, teams left early with the warning to monitor their Fitbit Charge devices throughout the leg.
7. For the Peruvian Speed Bump in Leg 10, one team had to type out a loan for which of these?

Answer: A llama

Receiving a clue from the Plaza des Armas, teams needed to look for "a shine with the morning sun" in the nearby Plazuela de la Merced. The clue would lead them to a shoeshine station, though this proved tough for teams to locate due to its proximity to their previous route marker.

Here, Matt and Ashley were provided with their Speed Bump task during which they had to use a pair of old-school typewriters to fill out loans for llamas. Once approved, they could resume racing with the other teams and lead Trujillo bound for Santo Domingo and their next clue.
8. In Leg 10, team members completed a Road Block in the fields of rural Peru, but this and their subsequent task involved which local crop?

Answer: Sugar cane

Reaching Cuartel #1 at Fundo San Fernando, teams nabbed their Road Block for this leg of the race during which one team member had to use a machete to harvest a row of sugar cane in a section of field. Jenny, Hayley, Mike, Tyler, and Matt completed this difficult task, earning themselves a clue and a bundle of sugar cane to be delivered to their next destination at Parque Ramón Castillo in Otuzco, Peru. Along the way, teams needed to check their FitBit Chargers to mark down activity data from Leg 10 to identify how many calories they needed to burn to drink a glass of sugarcane juice. Upon getting the right number they could have a glass and get another clue.
9. Which team completed the 'Mamas' Detour task (involving Peruvian chicha) in Leg 10?

Answer: Mike and Rochelle

Now in the Andean town of Otuzco, teams were given a Detour task taking them, at points, into the marketplace with the choice of either 'Mamas' or 'Papas'. In 'Mamas' , teams had to search the markets of Otuzco to buy the nine ingredients found in chicha, a Peruvian moonshine, and deliver them on foot to La Señora de La Chicha.

After having their items verified they could drink a glass each to receive their next clue. Hayley and Blair and Mike and Rochelle did this one. In 'Papas', teams had to back up and sort a pile of potatoes by type, then deliver them to a market stall and place them into four bins. If they incorrectly sorted, they would need to start over. Jelani and Jenny, Laura and Tyler, and Matt and Ashley finished this one.
10. Which team was eliminated in Peru in Leg 10?

Answer: Matt and Ashley

Upon completion of the Detour tasks, teams had to proceed on foot to Virgen de la Puerta, a statue at the Plaza De Armas of Otuzco where they would find the next Pit Stop. Hayley and Blair won the leg, their second of the race (and first since Leg 6 in Monaco). For this they ended up winning a FitBit Fitness Kit including home fitness equipment or year of gym memberships as well as one of everything FitBit makes, a laptop, and a cellphone to track workout progress. Matt and Ashley, forced to take on the Speed Bump, trailed for the entire leg and were unable to overtake the others. Because of this, they were eliminated in fifth place.
