Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country did teams commence Leg 7 of the race?

Answer: France

Starting Leg 7 on the edge of France's border with Monaco in the town of Cap-d'Ail, the top six teams were told to catch a flight to the nation of Namibia, ten hours south of their spot on the Mediterranean Sea. Upon arrival, the six teams could sign up for one of six bush plane flights taking them from Windhoek to a mystery destination. Descending to the dirt runway in the middle of the Namibian wilderness, they could get their next clue inside the Ford Ranger vehicles waiting for them.
2. In Leg 7, teams starting the Road Block in Namibia found their clue inside which of these?

Answer: Ostrich egg

Hopping into their standard Ford Rangers, teams needed to drive themselves into the Erindi Private Game Reserve to locate the traditional San Village found there, and it was at the village that they found their Road Block task waiting, painted on the side of an ostrich egg. Once teams determined who was 'feeling grassy', that member could break open the egg to determine that they would have to help the bushmen village construct a traditional grass hut to earn their next clue.

As long as they were helpful and followed instructions, they would be able to proceed. Aly, Jelani, Matt, Tyler, Blair, and Rochelle were elected for this task.
3. Teams had to pick up and deliver which of these before their Namibian Detour in Leg 7?

Answer: Salt lick

Before arriving at the San village (after picking up their Ford Rangers), teams needed to pick up a salt lick at a marked station near the airport and bring it with them through the leg. Upon completion of the Road Block, teams were told what they needed to do with it, specifically bringing it with them to the ranger station of the Erindi Private Game Reserve.

They could trade the salt lick to the ranger to be able to receive their Detour task info.
4. In Leg 7, teams faced a limited-station Detour in Namibia. How many teams could complete 'Pack', asking them to chop up meat, at the same time?

Answer: Three

The head ranger of Erindi Private Game Reserve gave teams the Detour task once they traded in a salt lick, and with this teams chose between 'Track' and 'Pack', both of which involved engaging with animals in the Namibian wilderness. In 'Track', teams used telemetric technology to locate an elephant while in 'Pack', teams carved wildebeest meat to serve to a pack of hyenas. Only three teams could complete either task at any given time, but four teams ended up finishing 'Pack' due to staggered arrivals (it was Laura and Tyler, Matt and Ashley, Jelani and Jenny, Mike and Rochelle). Steve and Aly and Hayley and Blair completed 'Track', though it took much longer.
5. Which team was last to arrive at the Pit Stop near Spitzkoppe, Namibia in Leg 7?

Answer: Steve and Aly

After completing the Detour, teams were instructed to drive themselves two hundred miles across the Namib Desert to the next Pit Stop at Spitzkoppe. There, they would need to find a distinctive rock formation to find Phil waiting, on top, at the Pit Stop. Matt and Ashley won this one in a footrace, taking their first victory of the season and winning $5,000 each for their success. Laura and Tyler ended up winning their third date night of the season as well.

The last team to arrive, due to a flat tire, was Steve and Aly.

They were, however, spared by this being a non-elimination leg.
6. Starting Leg 8, teams had to head to what Namibian city?

Answer: Swakopmund

After spending the night of their seventh Pit Stop in tents in the Namib Desert, the six remaining teams had to take a ride to the coastal city of Swakopmund (being driven by a local guide). Once there, they needed to visit a bookstore by the name of Swakopmunder Buchhandlung where they needed to scour through the daily newspaper to find an ad containing their next clue. Once they translated their German clue into English, they could head into the desert to the destination and find their next task.
7. For the Speed Bump in Namibia in Leg 8, teams had to make which of these toys out of scrap pieces?

Answer: Planes

Although all six teams headed into the sands of the Erongo Region of Namibia to find the Ground Rush Adventures Skydiving Club, Steve and Aly arrived there to find the Speed Bump they'd incurred for coming in last on the previous (non-elimination) leg. For this additional task, the two of them had to make four toys out of repurposed soda cans and bottlecaps. Once they'd created these toys with the help of the local children who would be receiving them, they could rejoin the rest of the race course and grab their nearby Road Block clue.
8. During the Road Block in Leg 8, team members had the opportunity to skydive in Namibia.

Answer: False

Upon arriving at the Ground Rush Adventures Skydiving Club, teams were posed with the question 'Who has always wanted a skybox?'. For this, a supply box would be dropped from a plane flying over the Namib Desert and the selected team member needed to track and hunt down the case somewhere in a mile radius. After locating this, they had to head up a nearby hill to locate a waiting Travelocity Roaming Gnome, and then return with both to get their next clue.
Ashley, Laura, Hayley, Mike, Jelani, and Steve completed this task before driving off to Snake Bend Pan.
9. Which team was able to use the Express Pass to skip the 'Play' Detour task in Namibia in Leg 8?

Answer: Jelani and Jenny

Arriving at their Detour task in the middle of the Namib Desert, teams could either 'Work' or 'Play. in 'Work', chosen by Laura and Tyler, Hayley and Blair, and Mike and Rochelle, teams had to smooth out a five mile course of road by hooking up and dragging five massive tires behind their Ford pickup trucks.

In 'Play', they had to strap on skis and cross-country sand ski through the marked dunes of the desert. At the end of this course, they could sled down the dunes to their next clue. Matt and Ashley, Jelani and Jenny, and Aly and Steve went for this one (though Jelani and Jenny used their Express Pass. Completing the Detour, teams also encountered a Double U-Turn which Matt and Ashley and Laura and Tyler used to send Jelani and Jenny and Aly and Steve to the 'Work' Detour task.
10. Which team was eliminated from the race in Namibia at the end of Leg 8?

Answer: Aly and Steve

Completing the Detour, teams were told to find Phil waiting at the eighth Pit Stop in the Moon Landscape at the Goanikontes Oasis, but upon arriving at the site they would need to pick an exotic animal to bring on a quick walk to the Pit Stop. Their choices, at their leisure, included a camel, donkey, oryx, or zebra. Laura and Tyler, bringing a zebra along, arrived at the Pit Stop in first and secured their very first victory of the race, taking with them a trip for two to Queensland, New Zealand courtesy of Travelocity. Aly and Steve, held back by poor navigation, a Speed Bump, and both sides of the Detour, were unable to overcome their challenges and were eliminated at the end of this leg in sixth place.
