Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Merle cut off to escape from the rooftop in Atlanta?

Answer: His hand

Rick chained Merle to a pipe on the roof of a building after Merle tried to take over the group. T-Dog accidentally dropped the handcuff key down a drain. They left Merle on the roof and secured the door so the walkers wouldn't get to him. Merle escaped by sawing off his own hand. He later replaced it with a blade which he used as a weapon.
2. How did Merle's mother die?

Answer: In a cabin fire caused by a cigarette

When Carl's mother Lori dies, Daryl shares with him the story of his own mother's death. He said he was out playing with the neighborhood kids when he saw firetrucks going by. He ran to see where they were going, and it was to his own cabin. His mother had fallen asleep while smoking and set the cabin on fire. She burned up inside.
3. Why did Merle leave home before Daryl was grown?

Answer: Because otherwise he would have killed his abusive father

In season 3, when Merle and Daryl argue, Merle grabs him by his shirt and discovers his scars. He claims he didn't know their father beat him, too. "He did the same to you," Daryl says. "That's why you left first." Merle replies, "I had to, man. I would have killed him otherwise."
4. Why was Merle interested in joining the survivor's camp near the quarry?

Answer: He planned to rob it eventually

In season three, Merle tells Daryl, "You know what's funny to me? You and Sheriff Rick are like this now. Right? I bet you a penny and a fiddle of gold that you never told him that we were planning on robbing that camp blind."
5. What is Merle looking for when he rips open a mattress in the prison?

Answer: Crystal meth

Merle appears to have been a meth addict. When Daryl pulls out his bag of drugs looking for antibiotics in season 2, crystal meth can be seen in the bag. In season 4, Daryl mentions that Merle's drug dealer was white.
6. When the survivors need antibiotics, Daryl loots the satchel on Merle's motorcycle to find some. Why did Merle have them?

Answer: To treat an STD

The antibiotics are used to treat T-Dog, who is sewn up by Patricia on the Greene family farm.
7. Where is Merle from?

Answer: Georgia

Merle and his brother Daryl grew up in Georgia. After leaving home, Merle enlisted in the military, but he was later dishonorably discharged for punching a sergeant, according to "The Talking Dead."
8. Who discovers Merle when he is starving and nearly dead from blood loss?

Answer: The Governor

In Woodbury, Merle is treated for his wounds. There, he also learns to use weapons one handed, and he becomes a trusted lieutenant of the Governor.
9. When out scouting the wreckage of a helicopter, who does Merle discover and take to Woodbury?

Answer: Andrea and Michonne

The Governor asks Merle to interrogate Andrea. From her, Merle learns that Daryl became a trusted member of the group.
10. Who puts down Merle after he turns into a walker?

Answer: Daryl

It's an emotionally fraught moment for Daryl when he finds his walker brother feasting on a dead body. Merle, in a final act of redemption, was killed while attempting to take out the Governor.
11. Merle appears to Daryl in a hallucination when Daryl is wounded in his search for Sophia. What does Merle tell Daryl to "kick off" as he urges him to climb up a ravine?

Answer: His high heels

In the episdoe "Chupacabra," Merle appears to the wounded Daryl in a delirious hallucination. Daryl does not know where Merle is at this point in the series, but the mockery of his imaginary brother urges him to move on angrily. Merle tells him he's a joke, "playing errand boy" to Rick, and when Daryl is struggling to make it up the ravine, Merle mocks, "Hey, kick off those damn high heels and climb, son."
12. In which of these camps has Merle Dixon never lived?

Answer: Alexandria

Merle was dead by the time the survivors moved onto Alexandria. He started out in the Atlanta Survivor Camp with Daryl before settling in Woodbury. He briefly spent some time in the prison camp as well, much to the chagrin of Rick and some of the other survivors.
13. When Rick asks Merle to hand over Michonne to make peace with the Governor, what does Merle say?

Answer: "You're cold as ice, Officer Friendly."

Merle doubts that the offering will truly inspire the Governor to leave them alone, and he's sure the Governor will slowly torture Michonne, but he agrees to take her to him. Merle knocks her out and binds her wrists, but on the car ride to take her to the Governor, he changes his mind.

He cuts her loose and lets her go, saying, "There's something I got to do." He then goes on to ambush the Governor. Though he does not succeed, he takes out several of the Governor's men. "He gave us a chance," Carol tells Daryl.
14. Who did Merle tie to a chair and beat before throwing a walker in the room?

Answer: Glenn

Daryl tries to get Glenn to forgive Merle, but Glenn refuses, saying, "He tied me to a chair, beat me, and threw a walker in the room. Maybe I can call it even but he...He took Maggie to a man who terrorized her! Humiliated her! I care more about her than I care about me!"
15. Who brings Merle a tray of food when he joins the prison camp, warns him not to underestimate her, and tells him if he messes with Daryl, she will slit his throat?

Answer: Carol

The exchange occurs in a deleted scene, which is available to view on the season 3 Blu-Ray. After Merle joins them in the prison, Carol brings him a tray of food. She begins talking to him sweetly and innocently, with a smile on her face. She then threatens him, "I'm trying to play nice.

But if you screw this up, mess with Daryl, I will slit your throat while you sleep." At the conclusion of her calm threat, she stands and tells him, "Enjoy your food." Merle is impressed with Carol's transformation and later tells her, "You're not like you were."
