Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the actor who played the second Doctor?

Answer: Patrick Troughton

Patrick Troughton portrayed the Doctor from 1966 to 1969, appearing in 21 stories (covering 119 episodes). His first story was 'The Tenth Planet', and his last was 'The War Games'.

He reappeared in the role three further times, in specials that involved other Doctors, in 1973, 1983, and again in 1985.

2. When the Doctor regenerated, his companions Ben and Polly weren't sure if he was really the Doctor that they knew. What alien enemy validated this new Doctor by recognizing him?

Answer: A Dalek

Even though it was while fighting the Cybermen that the first Doctor 'died' ("The Tenth Planet"), they were already defeated when the Doctor regenerated. The first story featuring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor was "The Power of the Daleks". Sadly, the six episodes that made up this serial no longer exist, apart from still photos and some fragments of film.

Question by sherylepaas
3. What musical instrument did the second Doctor play, that supposedly helped him to think?

Answer: The recorder

Along with the recorder, Patrick Troughton's Doctor had a few other oddities that made him unique. He was known for wearing hats and other types of headgear, especially a stovepipe hat that he wore when outdoors. He also sported a bow tie and was known for saying "Oh my giddy aunt!"

Question by sherylepaas
4. The actor who played the second Doctor also played another character during his time on the show. What was the character's name?

Answer: Ramón Salamander

In "The Enemy of the World", Salamander was a respected politician and scientist who invented Sun Store technology to help grow crops and alleviate global hunger becoming 'Shopkeeper of the World', but had secretly murdered many officials in a plan to ensure world domination.

His appearance matches that of the Doctor which the Doctor took advantage of attempting to uncover Salamander's duplicity and thus reveal it to the world.

The other three options were all played by other actors. Captain Hopper (George Roubicek) appeared in the story "Tomb of the Cybermen", Colonel Attwood (Guy Middleton) cropped up in "The Highlanders", whilst Arturo Villar (Michael Napier-Brown) made an impact in "The War Games", all stories occuring during Patrick Troughton's time as Doctor Who.

5. What military organization, created to 'investigate and combat paranormal and extraterrestrial threats to the Earth', made its first appearance during the second Doctor's tenure?

Answer: U.N.I.T.

At the time of its creation, U.N.I.T. stood for 'United Nations Intelligence Taskforce'. Since the beginning of the 2005 series, however, U.N.I.T. was changed to stand for 'Unified Intelligence Taskforce'.

U.N.I.T. has continued to be a part of "Doctor Who" storylines over the decades. The original military leader of the organization, Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, became a companion to the Doctor in his own way, being included in many of the Doctor's adventures, if not as a constant traveling companion.

Question by reedy
6. The Cybermen featured in a number of stories during the second Doctor's tenure in both major and minor roles - how many serials in total?

Answer: 5

Their appearances were: 1967 "The Moonbase" and "The Tomb of the Cybermen"; 1968 "The Wheel in Space" and "The Invasion"; and in 1969 "The War Games".

However, in "The War Games" they were only seen as an image on a projector screen that the Doctor used in his defence against charges, made by his fellow Time Lords of crimes such as breaking the laws of time, and of interfering in history.

"The Tomb of the Cybermen" is Matt Smith's (eleventh Doctor) favourite story.

7. In the episode "The Three Doctors" (shown during the third Doctor's era) during the first 'meeting' of the three Doctors, we saw the first Doctor describing the appearance of Doctors one and two. How did he label the second Doctor?

Answer: Clown

The first Doctor actually said, "So you're my replacements - a dandy and a clown!" - the dandy referring to Pertwee's Doctor.

But both throughout his time as the Doctor and thereafter, Troughton's Doctor was described as portraying the role as a Cosmic Hobo who intensely believed that "bad laws were made to be broken".

Question by english_gent
8. Which of these companions did NOT accompany the second Doctor at any time during his tenure as the Doctor?

Answer: Barbara Wright

Barbara Wright (played by Jacqueline Hill) was one of the (first) Doctor's very first companions, outside of the Doctor's own granddaughter Susan Foreman. Barbara was teaching Susan in her History class when the odd gaps in Susan's historical knowledge intrigued her enough that she (and fellow teacher Ian Chesterton) followed Susan to a police box... which was, of course, the TARDIS.

The companions of the second Doctor were Polly, Ben Jackson, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Victoria Waterfield, and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

Question by Aragom
9. At the end of 6th season serial "The War Games", the second Doctor was exiled by the Time Lords to a planet and forced into a regeneration. On which planet was he marooned?

Answer: Earth

Budget constraints what they were, it made sense from a production standpoint to limit the Doctor's adventures to Earth for a time. Thus, the cost of producing special effects of travel to other planets, and sets for those other planets, was essentially eliminated.

At the same time that the Doctor was marooned on Earth, the memories of his companions - Zoe and Jamie - were erased and they were returned to a point in time just before they originally encountered the Doctor.

"The War Games" was the 50th story serial of the "Doctor Who" series, and the last one filmed in black and white.

Question by reedy
10. Outside of his own regular series, what story saw the last appearance of the second Doctor?

Answer: The Two Doctors

"The Two Doctors" was a serial during the tenure of the sixth Doctor (Colin Baker). The second Doctor made an appearance, along with his companion Jamie McCrimmon, beginning the serial's action as they were dispatched on a mission for the Time Lords. When the second Doctor's life was threatened, the sixth Doctor felt the effects, and was worried that a former version of himself had been killed and that he only now existed as an anomaly. He and his companion Peri Brown proceeded to investigate.
