Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the first episode, which two contestants announced that they knew each other and were dating?

Answer: Jennifer and Zoi

Jen and Zoi both came to the show from San Francisco. While at Pizzeria Uno, they announced to the group that they already knew each other and that they had been a couple for over three years. They wanted to go on and get it out in the open and see how the other contestants would react.
2. As an ode to Chicago, what did the chefs have to make during their very first Quickfire Challenge?

Answer: Deep-dish pizza

The chefs had to make Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, but they had to put their own personal spin on it. After the Quickfire, the chefs were separated into two groups according to how well they performed in the challenge. The top group got to pick who they wanted to compete against in the Elimination Challenge.
3. Who was the guest judge for the chefs' first Quickfire?

Answer: Rocco DiSpirito

The chefs had to deliver their deep-dish pizzas to the home of the guest judge, Rocco DiSpirito. He and Padma judged the pizzas and divided the chefs into two groups based on how they performed. After that, they then told the chefs that the house was actually where the chefs would be staying.

Rocco DiSpirito was born in New York. He graduated from the Culinary Arts Institute in 1986 and was named Food & Wine's Best New Chef in 1999. He has also written several books, including "Flavor" and "Rocco's Real-Life Recipes".
4. Wylie Dufresne was the guest judge for the second Quickfire Challenge and he told one of the chefs that he had 'nice sideburns'. Who was the chef that he was talking to, who also won the Quickfire?

Answer: Mark

Mark was the chef from New Zealand. Wylie made a comment about his sideburns because he and Mark both had big sideburns. For the Quickfire Challenge, the chefs were able to buy fresh ingredients from the farmers' market, but they could only use a total of five ingredients for their dish. Mark actually thought he wouldn't do well because he forgot one of his bags which contained the lettuce.

He made do without it, however, and ended up winning the Quickfire.
5. When the chefs catered the block party for some of the neighborhood's residents, where did they get their supplies from?

Answer: The residents' houses

The chefs had to split themselves into two teams--Red and Blue. They then had to get into their vehicles and they were taken to one of the many neighborhoods in Chicago. They were told that they would be catering the block party, but they would not be shopping for supplies.

Instead, they had to go door-to-door to ask the residents to give them groceries to use since many of the residents would already have bought food items for the block party.
6. Which chef won the taste-testing Quickfire?

Answer: Antonia

During the commentary before the Quickfire, Antonia said the taste-testing Quickfire was her absolute favorite challenge from the competitions. The chefs had to taste two brands of fifteen different items and determine which one was the better quality. Antonia got twelve out of fifteen correct. Jen and Ryan tied for runner-up with eleven correct. Stephanie came in last with only six correct.
7. Who won the challenge that took place at the Chicago Bears tailgate party?

Answer: Dale

Dale was from Chicago and was excited about the challenge. He also got to meet and see some of his favorite Chicago Bears football players. Being from Chicago, he had been to some tailgate parties when he was growing up, and he decided to make ribs. He was in the top three after the fans voted on their favorite dishes, and the judges picked his dish as the best one.

He won a Bears jersey and the Summit S-650 gas grill that he used for the challenge.
8. When the chefs took a trip to Second City, the crowd gave them suggestions for the names of their dishes. Dale and Richard won by making which of the following dishes?

Answer: Green Perplexed Tofu

The chefs thought they were getting to take the night off and enjoy the show at Second City. Once they were there, the hostess began to give categories and have the crowd make suggestions for the categories. The three categories were a color, an emotion, and a food.

She then announced that the chefs were going to prepare a meal for Second City and that their dishes were to be based off the phrase given to them by combining one word from each of the three categories. Dale and Richard partnered up to make 'Green Perplexed Tofu'.

They marinated the tofu in beef fat to make it taste like beef before they grilled it and served it with curry.
9. At the Judge's Table after the Common Threads Elimination Challenge where the chefs had children to help them create their dishes, which chef told Padma that he thought that Tom didn't like him?

Answer: Mark

The chefs had a budget of only ten dollars and Mark decided to make a vegetable curry and cinnamon rice. His assistant was Jesusita, who had never tried curry before. Mark was a bit nervous when Tom was in the kitchen the whole time because he said that you never knew what Tom was thinking.

When he went before the judges, he made the comment: "I think Tom doesn't like me." Tom laughed and said that he hoped Mark wasn't serious. Mark also expressed that he never knew how to please Tom.
10. Which chef won both the Quickfire Challenge and the Elimination Challenge for the Common Threads episode which centered on family-friendly meals?

Answer: Antonia

For the Quickfire, the chefs had to use Uncle Ben's rice to create a dish in fifteen minutes that would be something easy to make at home. The guest judge was Oprah's personal chef, Art Smith. For the Elimination Challenge, the chefs were told to create a dish to feed a family of four which a child could help make. Antonia made a whole wheat pasta stir fry which she made with her own daughter at home.

She started crying when she found out that they would be working with children because she was thinking of her own daughter at home. Antonia was the chef who was the single mom from Los Angeles, and this was her first Elimination Challenge win and her second Quickfire win.
