Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Data and Picard adopted disguises as Romulans to retrieve Ambassador Spock from the Romulan home world. What 2-part episode was this?

Answer: Unification

Leonard Nimoy's appearance in "TNG" marked one of only three such appearances by former "TOS" crew members (if you discount Majel Barrett's computer voice). The others were Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) in the pilot "Encounter at Farpoint", and Scotty (James Doohan) in "Relics".

2. In "Deep Space Nine's" third series, the episode "Destiny" saw three Cardassians board DS9 in the first Federation/Bajoran/Cardassian initiative since the occupation. Dejar and Gilora were two of the Cardassians. Who was the third?

Answer: Ulani

The Cardassians believed they had developed a communications system that would have allowed communication through the wormhole. However, Dejar was a member of the Obsidian Order and tried to sabotage Ulani and Gilora's work.

Communication through the wormhole became possible when a comet passed through it, leaving a trace of silithium behind.

3. "The ________ Computer" is a "Star Trek: The Original Series" episode in which Dr. Richard Daystrom, tests out a new computer, M5, on the Enterprise. At first M5 performs very well but eventually malfunctions and becomes as unstable as its creator, killing someone in engineering and destroying a starship. Two synonyms for the missing word are supreme and incomparable. Fill in the blank with the missing word which completes the title of this episode.

Answer: Ultimate

Eventually Dr. Daystrom revealed he had included his own memory engrams when building the M-5 which may have been partially responsible for it taking extreme measures to prevent itself from being disconnected and surviving at all costs. Spock rendered Daystrom unconscious with the Vulcan nerve pinch when he became completely delusional and unable to distinguish between himself and M-5. Kirk then used "verbal judo" to get M-5 to realize it is guilty of murder and it shut itself down.

But the Enterprise was not out of danger yet. Another starship was getting ready to destroy the Enterprise!

4. Who was the Communications Officer in "Star Trek: The Original Series"?

Answer: Uhura

Although never mentioned in any on-screen reference, the "Star Trek" canon lists Uhura's country of origin as "The African Confederacy", according to her character description for the aborted television series "Star Trek: Phase II".

5. What happened to Commander Charles Tucker III in the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Unexpected"?

Answer: He became pregnant

Archer had agreed to help a Xyrillian ship with repairs and Commander Tucker travelled to their ship. One of the Xyrillian engineers showed Trip their holodeck and showed him a 'game'. Unfortunately, the 'game' was a way of transferring genetic material and as a result, Trip became pregnant!

Question by Daddy19
6. What primarily was used to translate alien languages in the "Star Trek" Universe?

Answer: The Universal Translator

Injection with translator microbes is used in the science fiction show, "Farscape." These microbes then travel to the brain stem and allow the person injected to understand any verbal communication but not to speak it. If you haven't watched Farscape, I highly recommend it.*

I initially made up the other two choices only to find out on Wikipedia the novel, "Neuromancer," included the idea of chips plugged into sockets behind the ear which allowed the wearer to speak foreign languages. And probably in some science fiction novel, movie, or series there exists the idea of a universal language.*

In "Star Trek: TOS" and "Star Trek: Enterprise" the universal translator can be seen as a handheld device. In addition in "Star Trek: Enterprise" translators could be small enough to be attached to clothing. Though it should be pointed out that the universal translator as seen in "ST: Enterprise" is still in the developmental stage and could be unreliable. Which is one reason why Hoshi Sato, a gifted linguist, was a valued crew member.**

Let's move on to the advances seen in the 24th century. Most "TNG," "VOY," and "DS9" fans are familiar with the combadges worn by members of Starfleet. These incorporated universal translators which were also included in the design of comm systems of starships and shuttlecraft.**

7. When an officer died on a remote communication station, the finger pointed at the only remaining crew member - Aquiel. What was her last name?

Answer: Uhnari

Lieutenant Keith Rocha and Lieutenant Junior Grade Aquiel Uhnari were stationed on Communications Relay Station 47. The Enterprise-D had travelled there to provide supplies, however it found the station to be empty.

La Forge had to try and ascertain what had happened from Lt. Uhnari's logs and whilst Aquiel was found aboard a Klingon vessel, what happened to Lt. Rocha?

Question by Daddy19
8. Utopia Planitia is a large geographical basin on the planet Mars, where NASA's Viking 2 landed in 1976. What does Starfleet use it for in the "Star Trek" universe?

Answer: Shipyards

The shipyards are located both on the planet and in geosynchronous orbit above Mars' Utopia Planitia region. The first time that Captain Janeway visited USS Voyager was at the shipyards ("VOY" episode "Relativity"), and Commander Sisko was stationed there for three years following the Borg battle at Wolf 359 ("DS9" episodes "The Emissary" and "The Search, Part I").

Question by reedy
9. What was the name given to the area Seven of Nine and other Borg drones visited during their regeneration cycles?

Answer: Unimatrix Zero

Certain Borg drones had a genetic mutation, which meant they were able to use an interlink frequency to meet in a virtual world during their regeneration cycles. Initially, they were unable to remember their involvement in Unimatrix Zero, although Voyager's Doctor was able to modify a nanovirus to enable drones to retain their memories once their regeneration cycles was complete.

Question by Daddy19
10. What was the name of the species from "TNG" that was trying to establish a library of memories through telepathic memory retrieval?

Answer: Ullian

In their species history, the Ullians were once a violent race, using their telepathic abilities to 'rape' others with their mind. One of the researchers for the memory library was found guilty of doing this to the members of the Enterprise crew in the fifth-season episode "Violations".
