Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Heroes and Demons" was a first season episode of "Voyager" in which numerous crew members disappeared in a holodeck program of "Beowulf." Captain Janeway sent the Doctor into the program to try to find those who had gone missing. What name did the Doctor take for himself in the process?

Answer: Schweitzer

The character of the Doctor, played by Robert Picardo, never took a name in a permanent way during the series. At different times, he took each of the names presented here, but Schweitzer (after Albert Schweitzer) was the very first one that he took for himself in the seven-year run.

2. Invited to spend some time on the planet Sikaris in the season one episode "Prime Factors," the crew learned of a technology, called a spatial trajector, capable of moving objects 40,000 light years. The Sikarians' version of the 'Prime Directive' would not let them share the technology. Voyager crew members conspired to illegally trade the collected works of Federation literature (which the Sikarians would value highly) for the trajector matrix. Which crew member made the exchange?

Answer: Tuvok

The trajector matrix turned out to be incompatible with Federation technology. Tuvok took responsibility for the botched plan and told Janeway he wanted to spare her the ethical dilemma of an illegal act. She told him not to do anything like that again. Despite his professions of respect for the captain, Tuvok would be a thorn in Janeway's side more than once in the trip ahead - and not just because of the number of shuttlecraft he wrecked!

Question by CmdrK
3. In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Learning Curve", Tuvok had to try to teach some of the former Maquis crew how to try to work in line with Starfleet protocols. Which of the following was not one of crew to undergo Tuvok's training?

Answer: Suder

Suder would cause a different problem in a subsequent episode, however he was not one of the Maquis crew that caused Tuvok a problem in "Learning Curve". When Tuvok managed to show some flexibility by trying to save Gerron, the other two decided to put more effort into following Starfleet rules.

4. The second-season episode "Non Sequitur" saw Ensign Harry Kim wake up on earth in an alternate timeline; one in which he never joined the Voyager crew. In order to return to his proper reality, Harry had to recreate the circumstances that caused this problem. Accessing information on Voyager in that reality, Harry learned that Tom Paris was on Earth. What was Paris doing?

Answer: Living in Marseilles, France

After Harry contacted Tom, security personnel from Starfleet apprehended Harry, thinking he was a Maquis spy. They placed a security anklet on him to track his movements. Harry managed to get help from Tom to escape his 'confinement' and they stole a runabout (designed by Harry in that reality) and flew into the timestream that caused the problem originally, returning Harry to the proper reality.

Question by reedy
5. In "Death Wish" from Voyager's season two, we got to see the home of the Q Continuum. What did it look like (in a manner that humans could understand)?

Answer: A way station in a desert

A member of the Q Continuum, who we came to know as Quinn, wanted asylum on Voyager and be granted mortality; tired of living forever he wanted to commit suicide. The Q we've always known as "Q" wanted him back under Continuum control. Captain Janeway agreed to hold a hearing under Federation regulations. During the hearing it was decided to visit the Continuum to see if it was an oppressive place. The road passing by the way station was meant to symbolize the path from the Continuum around the universe and back. Quinn was granted asylum, and with Q's unexpected assistance, committed suicide.

Question by CmdrK
6. Which character from the original "Star Trek" series appeared in the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Flashback"?

Answer: Hikaru Sulu

The flashback parts of the episode took place on USS Excelsior under the command of Captain Sulu. The characters of Montgomery Scott, Spock and Leonard McCoy all appeared in episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

Question by Daddy19
7. Identify the Voyager episode from this quote: "Captain, I think I should tell you, I've never actually landed a starship before."

Answer: "The 37s"

In "The 37s" from season two, Paris made this comment to Janeway when she ordered the ship to land on a planet from which they received an S.O.S. signal. Among the people they found on the planet were Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. This was the first "Star Trek" episode in which a full-size starship landed on a planet. The protocol was 'blue alert.'

Question by CmdrK
8. Tom Paris was a prolific holoprogrammer. In "The Cloud" from season one, he debuted "Sandrine's", based on a bistro in Marseilles, France, which he once frequented. A pool table was a prominent feature. Who was the resident pool hustler?

Answer: Gaunt Gary

Gaunt Gary was supposedly from the Ames Pool Hall in New York, N.Y., circa 1953. Paris claimed that Gary once hustled Willie Mosconi, one of the greatest pool players in the history of the game. At the end of the episode, Captain Janeway showed she was quite a pool hustler herself.

Question by CmdrK
9. The episode "Distant Origin" in the third season of "Star Trek: Voyager" introduced us to a species that seemed to have Earth as a common planet of origin. What was the name that this species, descended from Earth's dinosaurs, called themselves?

Answer: Voth

Each of the species listed is one that the crew of "Voyager" encountered in their travels, and the Xaranites and Vaadwaur were also reptilian in appearance, along with the Voth.

Regardless of the evidence of their common origins, the Voth religious leaders would not accept that their great species could have originated somewhere else, and came to this part of the galaxy as refugees - such talk was deemed heresy.

Question by reedy
10. In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Worst Case Scenario", B'Elanna Torres found a holodeck programme in which Chakotay was planning a mutiny. Who was the second person we saw trying out the programme and ended up pointing a phaser at his holographic self?

Answer: Tom Paris

B'Elanna Torres was the first person we saw running the programme. Tom Paris interrupted her as she was late for a dinner date and convinced her to restart the programme so he could have a go before he went back on duty. It subsequently turned out that Tuvok wrote the programme as a training exercise, but didn't finish it as the threat of a mutiny had decreased.
