Janus (properly pronounced JAYN-uhs) was indeed a two-faced god in Roman mythology. However, his worship was never as sinister as it is portrayed here. In real life, Janus is the Roman god of gates, of doors and of beginnings and endings, and was worshiped at harvests, marriages, births and other kinds of beginnings. One interesting note is that Janus also represented the transition from child to adult.

This a theme of particular significance in the second season.

Willow: 'She couldn't have dressed up like Xena?' I suppose then she would have been able to do some serious fighting, but it the episode would not have been as interesting. Then again...

Willy drags him out, even though it is Spike actually takes him away so he can use his blood to save Dru. I also couldn't resist putting this quote in. Willy, as Spike drags an unconscious Angel away: 'What are you gonna do with him anyway?' Spike: 'I'm thinking... maybe dinner and a movie. I don't want to rush into anything. I've been hurt, you know.'

This is one of the best quotes ever. Oz: 'I'm gonna ask you to go out with me tomorrow night. And I'm kinda nervous about it, actually. It's interesting.' Willow: 'Oh. Well, if it helps at all, I'm gonna say yes.' Oz: 'Yeah, it helps. It creates a comfort zone. Do you wanna go out with me tomorrow night?' Willow, cringing and slapping her forehead: 'Oh! I can't!' Oz: 'Well, see, I like that you're unpredictable.'

Jenny Calendar is in fact a Romanian or gypsy. Her real name is Janna, of the Kalderash clan, and she was sent by her people to make sure that the curse which restored Angel's soul almost a hundred years ago (first mentioned in 'Angel') stays in effect, ensuring his eternal suffering and punishment.

Ms Calendar takes Giles and Buffy to her uncle's, but there they find her uncle dead, killed by Angel, who has scrawled 'Was it good for you too?' on the wall in blood. 'I know what I have to do,' says Buffy. 'Kill him.'

Willow: 'I knew it! I knew it! Well, not 'knew it' in the sense of having the slightest idea, but I knew there was something I didn't know. You two were fighting way too much. It's not natural!' Xander: 'I know it's weird...' Willow: 'Weird? It's against all laws of God and Man! It's Cordelia! Remember? The, the 'We Hate Cordelia' club, of which you are the treasurer.' Duh. But it is a bit of a goof. James listens to the song 'I Only Have Eyes For You' in the music room as he prepares to kill himself in 1955. But the recording he's listening to is the Flamingos' version, which wasn't released until 1959.

Cordelia: (referring to Principal Snyder) 'How about because you're a tiny, impotent Nazi with a bug up his butt the size of an emu?' Buffy: 'Sums it up.'

Angelus: 'Hello, lover. I wasn't sure you'd come.' Buffy: 'After your immolation-o-gram? Come on, I had to show.'

At the hospital, Xander talks to Willow, tenderly telling her that she can't die, that he needs her... and that he loves her. At last her eyelids flutter and she awakens, mumbling, 'Oz?' Oz indeed does show up at that moment, tenderly kissing Willow's forehead. So, so sad!

Angel: 'What's happening?' Buffy: 'Shh. Don't worry about it. I love you.' Angel: 'I love you.' Buffy: 'Close your eyes.' That was such a traumatic scene. And having to wait so long before seeing what happened! So not fair.
