Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The golem Astaroth has been the powerhouse of the "Soul Calibur" series since his introduction in the first "Soul Calibur" game released in 1998, proceeding "Soul Edge/Blade", in which Astaroth was absent. Astaroth's weapon of choice is the "Giant Axe" given to him by his cult, but what is the name of Astaroth's axe?

Answer: Kulutues

Astaroth has wielded "Kulutues" throughout every "Soul Calibur" game he's appeared in. Kulutues has a long wooden handle with ridged edges, a tipped butt and brown leather wrapped around it's grip. The head is that of a beard-axe type. Kulutues retains this image until "Soul Calibur 4", where Astaroth himself has undergone physical changes that make him appear somewhat volcanic, and so his axe has undergone a similar transformation.

"Battle Ax" is the axe wielded by the character Rock, the original powerhouse from "Soul Edge/Blade", which he loses during a fight with Lizardman in "Soul Calibur". It is also one of Astaroth's alternative weapons in "Soul Calibur 2". "Nanbanfu" is one of Astaroth's other alternative weapons, but he has never wielded it in the canon story. "Apocalypse" is the name of the mace Rock wields as his default weapon in "Soul Calibur 3" and "Soul Calibur 4".
2. Being a golem, Astaroth was created by a cult known as "Fygul Cestemus", who serve the Greek God of War, Ares. In the prelude the "Soul Calibur 3", Astaroth discovers that his design was based on a human (who later turns out to be the character "Rock"), and so he destroys nearly the entire cult in a frenzy. What happens to Kunpaetku, the cult leader?

Answer: He hides from Astaroth's attacks, but is later killed by someone else

After Astaroth leaves the shrine in ruins, Kunpaetku sits atop the rubble cursing at Astaroth's "imperfections". He is later confronted by Maxi, who is seeking revenge on Astaroth after the golem annihilated his pirate crew, and when Maxi discovers that Kunpaetku was the one who created Astaroth, he kills him.
3. In "Soul Calibur 2", every character had 11 weapons each, which included their default weapon, a version of "Soul Edge", a "legendary" weapon, and a joke weapon. Astaroth's legendary weapon was a black scythe called "Thanatos", meaning "death" in Greek. Thanatos not only had a very high defence, but also allowed Astaroth to heal a great amount of damage every time he inflicted damage upon his opponent. Despite the weapon's great strengths, it also had a very distinct weakness. What was this weakness?

Answer: Astaroth couldn't block

If wielding Thanatos, Astaroth is unable to block (although he is still able to perform guard impacts). It is said in the weapon's background that it is said to be the scythe of the grim reaper himself, hence the name "Thanatos", and that the reaper had no reason to defend himself from human attacks.
4. What is the name of Astaroth's English voice actor in "Soul Calibur 3"?

Answer: Michael McConnohie

American voice actor Michael D. McConnohie is recognised for his deep roaring voice and has voiced lots of popular characters not only in video games, but in animes, live action series, and movies. Some of his other video game roles include Seth from "Street Fighter 4", Kano from "Mortal Kombat v.s. DC Universe", Zhang Liao from "Dynasty Warriors", and the narrator in "Time Crisis 4".

Jay S Gilbert was Astaroth's voice actor in "Soul Calibur 2", whilst Patrick Ryan and Mitch Urban voiced other characters in "Soul Calibur 3"; Nightmare and Yoshimitsu respectively.
5. Astaroth's gameplay is described in "Soul Calibur 4" as a "violent and brutal style". Being the game's "powerhouse", he has some of the highest damaging attacks in the game. Which of the following attacks in "Soul Calibur 4" is NOT unblockable? Guide: A = Horizontal Attack, B = Vertical Attack, K = Kick, G = Guard

Answer: Down+Back, Hold A

"Down+Back, A" performs the "Discus" attack, where Astaroth will duck down and sweep his axe round in a large circle towards his opponents feet at a great range. Many attacks in the "Soul Calibur" series become unblockable or cause "guard-break" if the final command is held down for a longer period of time, but holding A during the Discus attack, although slowing the attack down, it doesn't cause either of these. Instead, it allows the player the option of comboing into either the "Double Discus" (by pressing A again), or the "Discus Breaker" (by pressing B).

The three unblockable attacks are; "Canyon Creation" (Back, Back, Hold B), where Astaroth holds his axe in the air for several moments before driving it straight down. During "Demented Moon" (Down, Down+Foward, Foward, B+K) where he holds his axe in both hands downwards for a few moments, then drives it straight upwards with only a short reach. And the last one, "Maelstrom Divide" (A+G), is one of Astaroth's basic throws, which effectively resembles a "Sit-Down Power Bomb".
6. Astaroth has a large number of throws in his arsenal, some that include offence against airbourne opponents, crouching opponents, and even prone opponents. Which of the following move names is NOT a throw?

Answer: Body Splash

Body Splash (Forward, B+K) is an attack where Astaroth jumps straight forwards, hitting his opponent with his girth.

Hades Destroyer (B+G) is Astaroth's other basic throw, where he grabs his opponent and spins them round in one arm, scraping their body against the ground during the first whirl, then slamming them to the ground after the second.

Beat Down (A+G or B+G from the left side of the opponent) is Astaroth's left side throw, where, after grabbing the opponent, he slouches their body forwards, thumps them on the back with his forearm, then slams the back of his axe's head right onto their spine.

Lastly, Titan Bomb (Down, Up, B+G against airbourne opponent) can only be done whilst the opponent has been knocked back through the air by a pop-up attack. Astaroth leaps up, grabs the opponent in midair, and then slams their ribs down onto his knee upon landing.
7. During Chapter 5 of "Soul Calibur: Legends", every one of the characters you unlock excluding Siegfried is trapped in a dream state after the Empress claims Soul Calibur. To unlock them again and continue advancing through the game, the player must play through the levels with the characters available to them and defeat the other characters in pairs at the end of a level. Which character is Astaroth@ paired with? Hint - This character is one of the most well-known characters in the "Soul" series. Spelling is important.

Answer: Mitsurugi

Heishiro Mitsurugi is a samurai warrior who travels the world seeking stronger opponents, which is what made him seek Soul Edge in the first place. Canonically, it is said that he is capable of cutting through steel rifles, and has rarely lost any fights.

The other characters' dialogue hints at the reason Mitsurugi and Astaroth@ are paired together; because they are more battle-hungry hotheaded members of the group.
8. During the events of "Soul Calibur", Astaroth pledged allegiance to Nightmare, but only so he could help Soul Edge regain it's full strength and take it from Nightmare when that time comes. Astaroth wasn't the only character to have sided with Soul Edge however. Which of the following characters did NOT side with Nightmare during the events of the first "Soul Calibur"?

Answer: Cervantes

The dread pirate Cervantes De Leon, wielder of Soul Edge in "Soul Edge/Blade", was resurrected by the evil seed released by Nightmare in the events preceeding "Soul Calibur", but never actually sided with him at all, but instead ended up creating a weaker version of Soul Edge (listed as "Soul Edge: Female" in "Soul Calibur 2 and 3") from some of the fragments of the blade shattered by Sophitia in "Soul Edge/Blade".

The Spartan warrior Aeon Calcos, or Lizardman, was brainwashed by the Fygul Cestemus cult and was appointed as the leader of the lizardmen the cult had created. As Nightmare's servant, he abducts Rock's adopted son Bangoo, and in turn, Rock eventually defeats Lizardman and rescues Bangoo. Following this, Lizardman's memories eventually begin to return to him.

Isabella "Ivy" Valentine, is in fact the blood-daughter of Cervantes. Not knowing this, she sided with Nightmare because she could feel a connection with Soul Edge, but eventually became disgusted with her bloodthirsty comrades and decided to leave. On her way out, she confronts Taki and learns that she was in fact Cervantes' daughter.

Siegfried Schtauffen claimed Soul Edge during the end of "Soul Edge/Blade", and was therefore transformed into Nightmare. In effect, during the events of "Soul Calibur" (as well as "Soul Calibur 2"), Siegfried and Nightmare are in fact the same being.
9. In the spinoff action-adventure game "Soul Calibur: Legends", you confront a prototype version of Astaroth, and once defeating it, Astaroth "@lpha" becomes a playable character. Every character in "Soul Calibur: Legends" has four different weapons, one which is their default, and three others that are unlocked through the game. All four of Astaroth@'s weapons appear as some of Astaroth's weapons in previous "Soul Calibur" games. Which of these is NOT one of Astaroth@'s weapons in "Soul Calibur: Legends"?

Answer: Tabar

Tabar, the silver crescent axe which is one of Astaroth's alternative weapons in "Soul Calibur 2", is not present in "Soul Calibur: Legends".

As it has always been, Kulutues remains as Astaroth@'s standard weapon. The second weapon you obtain for him is Nanbanfu, where the player must reach the "Garnet Warrior" rank. Astaroth@'s third weapon is Terror Moon, which is the fastest of Astaroth@'s four weapons, and is obtained after the player completes the "Ammon Temple" quest in the fifth chapter of the game. Astaroth@'s last weapon is the Great Maul, his strongest weapon, which the player will obtain once they reach the "Diamond Paladin" rank.
10. And finally, as far as the canon storyline up to the events preceeding "Soul Calibur 4", has Astaroth been killed?

Answer: Yes

During the events of the first "Soul Calibur", when Kilik, Xianghua and Maxi made their way to Nightmare's castle, they would have to fight off the Fygul Cestemus cult's golems. Only after they had defeated the golems did Astaroth himself step forward to face them. Maxi stayed to fight Astaroth alone, whilst Kilik and Xianghua went ahead to confront Nightmare.

The gruelling battle ended with the victory of Maxi, and in turn Astaroth was killed, but Ares was enraged by Astaroth's defeat and forced the ground to swallow Maxi up. Maxi survived, but as a result he lost his memories of Kilik and Xianghua. Astaroth didn't stay dead for long though. Just before the events of "Soul Calibur 2", Ares would bring him back to life once again, stronger than ever.

Astaroth would go on to slaughter the Fygul Cestemus cult as well as crush Rock in battle, and as of "Soul Calibur 4", Maxi still seeks the golem to avenge his fallen friends.
