Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Winky's Walkway, the first stage of the Monkey Mines, what is Winky?

Answer: Frog

Winky is the third of five animal companions you can find in the game and the first one to feature a level named after them. The stage is relatively simple-- suspended walkways are cloaked in darkness, and only swaying light fixtures illuminate the gloomy surroundings. Winky is found early on in the stage on a high platform; finding him is a big help since, as a frog, he can jump higher than the Kongs normally can.

While Winky isn't required to complete the level, he may give a bit more security during the higher jumps.
2. In Winky's Walkway, certain enemies are able to regenerate continuously thanks to a barrel with what painted on the side?

Answer: Skull

Adding to the difficulty of this new stage of the game, some new barrels make their first appearance in Winky's Walkway. About halfway through the stage, you'll end up facing Gnawty...after Gnawty...after Gnawty...as they hop out of a skull barrel-- a literal everlasting enemy respawner.

The only way to succeed despite these setbacks is to forge (or hop) past them. Fortunately, the level is freakishly short, so you'll only run into a couple of these.
3. Which one of these obstacles is not present in Mine Cart Carnage?

Answer: Falling support beams

A classic for the ages, Mine Cart Carnage is the first level in any "Donkey Kong" game to include the famous 'Mine Cart Level'. Here, Donkey Kong and Diddy hop into a waiting cart and careen down the track-- perhaps the most basic of its type-- avoiding pitfalls along the way and dodging oncoming traffic (which is pretty senseless if you think about it). Most of the level is self-explanatory; rather than heading into harm's way, it's almost as if harm comes to you first. Most of the first two thirds of the stage leads you along with banana trails anyways.
4. In the Bouncy Bonanza level, what exactly is 'bouncy'?

Answer: Both of these

Bouncy Bonanza, taking place entirely in a system of caverns within the Monkey Mines, forces the Kongs to be bouncy quite early on; the course has several different spots containing bouncy tires and, in some cases, rollable tires (which you can push along the ground) to reach high-up spots or items. Enemies will also be bouncy-- Kritters will have a tendency to jump higher than normal in this stage to pose an extra threat, so timing is key. To add to the general bounciness of it all, you can also find Winky the Frog in a hidden cavern.
5. What, exactly, do you need to facilitate the 'stop' and 'go' of Stop & Go Station?

Answer: Barrels

Stop & Go Station is an interesting level set in a darkened mine shaft simply because its mechanic is a new one for the game. As you race through the level, certain enemies will only move in green light, forcing you to jump through barrels marked 'STOP' and 'GO' to trigger a red light.

The barrels will only work if you hit them, but will revert back to their original state on their own, no matter how quickly that might be. No one said it would be any easier.
6. Which of these enemies is affected by the 'stop' and 'go' of Stop & Go Station?

Answer: Rockkroc

Rockkrocs are rare enemies to the game in that they only really appear in Stop & Go Station. Affected entirely by the barrels scattered throughout the level, they move really fast in green light, simply skittering around the floor and charging through whoever is in their way.

When the red light is used, they will turn into unmovable rocks, rendering them harmless. These are one of the few enemies in the game that can't be harmed. Coincidentally, Stop & Go Station is also the first level in any "Donkey Kong Country" game to feature the evil mainstay, Klaptrap.
7. Let's say it's your first time in the Monkey Mines. If you visit Funky Kong, where else can you travel to?

Answer: Kongo Jungle

Funky's Flights appears immediately after Stop & Go Station, allowing you to travel to other reaches of Kong Island in a single trip. Unfortunately there is a catch: you can only visit worlds you've been to. In other words, a first time visitor will only be able to fly back to the game's first world, Kongo Jungle.

The further in the game you go, the more places you can return to to harvest extra lives, find animal coins, or simply practice your favourite stages.
8. Which Kong is visited last, chronologically, in the Monkey Mines?

Answer: Cranky Kong

Cranky Kong comes third on the map, right after the fourth stage of the area-- Stop & Go Station. As usual, he brings to the table his own brand of senility and helpful tips. Candy and Funky can both be visited immediately after the third level-- Bouncy Bonzana. Candy can be found just up the cliffs from that level while Funky is on the second part of the map, en route to Stop & Go Station. Oddly, all three locations look the exact same as they did back in the Kongo Jungle, despite being in a different location entirely.
9. In Millstone Mayhem, what enemy powers the giant millstones?

Answer: Gnawty

Almost as though it were a hamster in a giant wheel, the humble Gnawty can be found in the center of this level's titular millstones. While they never really run off a track (or stay stationary), the millstones can pose for some interesting challenges in the level, particularly because their sizes are cumbersome and difficult to navigate around; touching one will cause your Kong to drop out. Millstone Mayhem is also the first level of the game to be placed in the ruins setting.

It doesn't appear again until Temple Tempest in the Vine Valley.
10. Master Necky, the final boss of the Monkey Mines, uses which of these as projectiles?

Answer: Coconuts

Necky, found in the Necky's Nuts level, opts to attack DK and Diddy from the sides of the stage by craning out his long neck and shooting Coconuts in arcs through the air. To defeat this boss, you need to employ the same tactic used against Very Gnawty in the Kongo Jungle-- you have to jump on his head five times to bring him down and win your banana loot. To do this this time around, you'll need the extra boost of a bouncy tire in the middle of the stage.
