Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many different animal companions can you ride in the game?

Answer: Four

Five different animal companions can be utilized in the game but you can only ride four. Squawks the Parrot, who appears in Torchlight Trouble in Gorilla Glacier, is too small for the Kongs to grab onto. Nonetheless, the Kongs can hop onto Rambi the Rhino, Enguarde the Swordfish, Expresso the Ostrich, and Winky the Frog. Expresso and Winky do not appear in subsequent games in the series; "Donkey Kong Country" is both their debut and their swan song.
2. Although there are six different stages to the game (plus K. Rool's short stage), only four different creatures appear as bosses. One of them is Necky; which other species appears twice?

Answer: Gnawty

Although the six stages of the game are different in theme, the variety of bosses isn't stellar. Kongo Jungle contains Very Gnawty, a beaver, who later reappears in a stronger form as Really Gnawty on Gorilla Glacier. Likewise, master Necky appears worse than before in Chimp Caverns. Queen B. is a Zinger (bee) boss found at the end of Vine Valley while Dumb Drum completes Kremkroc Industries, Inc.

In all cases, the Kongs fight on piles and piles of Bananas, all part of their hoard.
3. Kongo Jungle is the first stage of the game. Which of these is the fifth?

Answer: Kremkroc Industries, Inc.

The game has six stages in addition to Gang-Plank Galleon, the final boss battle with King K. Rool. All of these involve looping up and back over the world map beginning with Kongo Jungle and going through the Monkey Mines, Vine Valley, Gorilla Glacier, Kremkroc Industries, Inc., and Chimp Caverns in that order. Kremkroc is a highly polluted stage containing large factories and scummy water levels.
4. You've completed a level and an exclamation mark now appears at the end of its name on the level selection map. Why is this?

Answer: You've found all of the bonus levels inside

While the collectibles and achievements in later game are much more extensive (possibly due to Rare's collect-a-thon mentality, especially in the Nintendo 64 games starring DK and Banjo), the only further work to be done with collecting in "Donkey Kong Country", for perfectionists at least, is finding all bonus barrels and completing the challenges within, earning an exclamation mark.

This does contribute to the overall percentage complete found on the game selection screen. Without them you won't score higher than 50%. With all of them you'll reach 101%.
5. Krusha is a relatively large enemy found in later levels of the game. Can Diddy Kong jump on them to beat them?

Answer: No

Due to the Krusha's larger, bulkier size compared to other critters, the lovable chimp can't hurt them that easily, instead bouncing off (and, usually, into a pit because it can't get worse). Krushas can be cartwheeled into or defeated with a barrel to the face, so they're not impossible to take on. Donkey Kong can just jump on them with ease.

A similar enemy is the Klump which, due to extra armor, can only be defeated by the same means.
6. Which buttons do you press to back out of a level you've already completed?

Answer: START-SELECT

If you've pushed yourself into the wrong level it's quite easy to back out provided you've already been there, done that. Pressing START to pause the game and then SELECT will immediately back you out, no questions asked, with anything you've collected thus far. This method will not work if you have not completed the level for the first time.
7. When DK and Diddy defeat a boss they receive a gigantic banana as a reward. What's written on the banana's label?

Answer: Nintendo

While the developers originally placed a Dole sticker on the bananas, the sticker was replaced with Nintendo's logo shortly before release, likely due to licensing issues. The giant banana has no real significance in the game; DK's hoard isn't filled until the game is completed. All of the boss battles are fought in front of (and between) a gigantic pile of bananas, so the one isn't really sweetening the deal any more. You get a total of seven gigantic ones.
8. Which of these Kongs does not appear in "Donkey Kong Country" (SNES)?

Answer: Dixie Kong

Besides Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, the game also introduces long-time series staples Cranky, Funky, and Candy, all of whom perform roles quite typical to platformers. Cranky is generally ineffective unless you're a first-timer. Throughout the series (including this game) he gives tips and, in this game, those come at no cost. Funky transports players from stage to stage, again at no cost. Candy allows you to save your game at her Save Barrel stations; she does not return again in a more functional capacity until "Donkey Kong 64" as her save function is replaced by Wrinkly Kong's services.
9. What colour is the one-up balloon?

Answer: Red

One-up balloons can be found throughout the game and can be a saving grace to players. Although they can easily be found on their own, the Kongs will also receive a one-up if they obtain all of the K-O-N-G letters in a stage or one hundred bananas at any time. Most bonus levels will also reward a balloon if completed appropriately.

This, and later games in the series introduce other colours of balloons representing higher denominations; green for 2-up and blue for 3-up.
10. In Gang-Plank Galleon, which of these will King K. Rool throw at you?

Answer: Crown

The final battle with King K. Rool is set on a pirate ship off the coast of Kong Island and when you engage in combat with him he'll try a couple of dirty tricks to defeat the Kongs beginning with tossing his pointy crown your way. The rest of the battle consists of swift jaunts across the deck, hopping around, and dropping cannonballs from above.

When the battle is over, the game is complete (unless you aim for completionism). Gangplank Galleon is later used as the first stage in "Donkey Kong Country 2".
