Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We quickly create a character, whom we'll call "Burly Bill", to start our first dungeon. He'll be a Fighter, and we'll also need to select a race for him. Since many races are locked at the beginning of the game, which of these races CAN be selected for Burly Bill?

Answer: Dwarf

The difference between races lies in the bonuses they get when they choose to "forfeit" or "sacrifice" a skill they don't need. Dwarves get a bonus to their maximum health when they do this, so Burly Bill is going to be a stout fellow. Each race is suitable for different classes (like Fighter, Wizard, Thief, or advanced ones). We can start unlocking new races to play once we finish the dungeon a few times with different characters.
2. Burly Bill is a Fighter-class character. Like any other characters, the Fighter gets three unique abilities. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: BLOODLUST: 50% Physical and Magical resistance

There are four classes to choose for your first game. Each class that beats the dungeon for the first time will unlock more classes, up to a total of 18! No class is strictly "better" than any other; each has its advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the correct race and class for the dungeon you want to play is essential!
3. Burly Bill is now exploring the dungeon, and has come across a strange altar. There are three altars in every dungeon, but only one god can be worshiped. Since Burly Bill is a Fighter, which of these gods is the WORST one he could choose to worship?

Answer: Mystera Annur

Each god will be pleased with some actions you take, and displeased with others. Displeasing a god is a very bad idea, as the gods are vengeful and will punish you for your heresy. If you perform well, however, the god will give you "piety" points which can be used to "purchase" various boons and bonuses unique to that god. Mystera Annur is the god of magic, and by worshiping her Burly Bill would need to give up killing monsters with his axe - which is pretty much the only thing he does well! Instead, he may choose to go for Taurog, the God of War, assuming his altar is somewhere nearby. Taurog can make Bill a veritable champion of destruction!
4. Going around a corner, Burly Bill runs into his first monster: a Bandit. There are about a dozen monster types in the game, and each has its own strengths and weakenesses compared to other monsters. Which of the following does NOT describe the special properties of a Bandit?

Answer: He has an extremely high-damage attack

Depending on your character class, some monsters' "weakenesses" may outweigh their "advantages" - these are the monsters you should attack if possible. For instance, since Burly Bill is primarily a melee-combat specialist, he'll be able to chop down monsters who are very tough. On the flipside, he is more vulnerable to monsters who make very powerful attacks themselves; they could kill him outright! This bandit doesn't have a lot of health, but he will hit Burly Bill and suck out all his mana, not to mention poison him so that he cannot recover his health! It's best to avoid this bandit for now.
5. Burly Bill has slain a few monsters and has gained enough experience points to go up a level. Which of the following DOESN'T happen when Bill's level goes up?

Answer: Bill's Maximum Mana capacity increases proportionally

When Bill levels up, his Attack skill and Maximum Health go up, and he is fully healed of all damage and ailments. This is important to remember, because leveling up is a good way to return to a good fighting state after several tough battles. In fact, one very useful (practically essential!) trick is to fight a high-level monster, and then halfway through when you can't fight anymore, just kill a lower-level monster elsewhere in the maze that would give you enough experience points to "level up", healing you and enabling you to beat that one tough monster you were fighting earlier.

This trick can be used to kill monsters far stronger than you are - and gain massive quantities of experience as a result!
6. After exploring much of the dungeon and killing many monsters, Burly Bill is now a powerful warrior in his own right. But entering a large hallway, he suddenly encounters the dungeon "Boss", the creature which he needs to defeat to beat this dungeon! What is the difference between a "regular" monster and a "boss" monster?

Answer: The boss has the highest level (10) possible for monsters, giving it extra health and attack damage.

The "Boss" is an extremely difficult monster to kill, so Bill was smart to have gained a lot of experience before trying it. Defeating the dungeon boss can be very tricky, especially if the boss is a type of monster your character would be ill-equipped to handle even if it wasn't a "boss". Be sure to reserve as many healing and mana potions as possible before trying this! It's ok if you fail too, since each dungeon takes only about 10 minutes to complete!
7. Burly Bill has done it! He's defeated the dungeon boss and finished the dungeon! He now retires to a life of comfort and wealth. "Desktop Dungeons" is a casual game, and as such for the next dungeon we'll choose a new character and start entirely from scratch. Only one thing will carry forward from bill's adventure; which of these is it?

Answer: Bill's money

Each dungeon is a "stand-alone" experience, using an entirely new character. Fortunately, money carries forward from character to character, allowing you to "hoard" money if you don't need it. For instance, if you feel that you can't win the dungeon you're playing, conserve your money for next time instead of spending it to buy items.

In fact, one character class (the Thief, and especially a Goblin Thief) can be used just for gathering lots of money from a dungeon, thanks to extra money piles appearing in dungeons when playing that class.

This money is then used with the next character to "seriously" try to beat the dungeon boss.
8. Finishing your first "Normal" dungeon, the game unlocks a special "Challenge Dungeon" for you to play. Which of these Challenge Dungeons is unlocked first?

Answer: The Snake Pit

A Challenge Dungeon contains only three types of monsters (compared to the Normal Dungeon which can contain up to a dozen different types!). One of these monsters is unique to that particular Challenge Dungeon. In addition, the Challenge Dungeons have no less than TWO bosses which you must defeat to win.

More Challenge Dungeons can be unlocked by beating the "normal" dungeon with various character classes (and more character classes are unlocked as you play). Each of the challenge dungeons is easier to beat with specific race/class combinations, and harder to defeat with others. You can play any of the unlocked Challenge Dungeons at any time, or a normal dungeon if you prefer it.
9. To beat the Challenge Dungeon, we choose an Elf Wizard instead - we'll call him "Halreth Ficklespell". Upon exploration of the dungeon, Ficklespell comes across a shimmering glyph carved into the wall. This glyph can give him a special skill - in this case a spell - to help him fight monsters. Even though not all skill glyphs appear in every dungeon (they are randomly selected), this particular glyph appears in each and every dungeon you play. Which glyph is it?

Answer: Fireball

Glyphs cost mana to use, so not all characters will really need them. Fireball is a very expensive spell, but Harleth is an Elf spellcaster with lots of mana to spend, so Fireball will now be his primary method for defeating monsters. There are also cheaper glyphs that assist in hand-to-hand combat, which are great for fighter characters like our old friend Burly Bill. If you find a glyph that isn't helpful, you can "Sacrifice" it to gain a permanent bonus.

The type of bonus you receive depends solely on your character's race. If Harleth the Elf chose to sacrifice a glyph, he would gain +2 to his Maximum Mana capacity - very useful for a magician! More fireballs!
10. After completing several dungeons, we've unlocked the character class called "Assassin". We make a new character, a Halfling Assassin called "Stealthblade". This character begins each dungeon with a free skill glyph that allows him to poison his enemies. What is the name of this glyph?

Answer: APHEELSIK

"I feel sick", get it? Every glyph in the game has a punny name, so LEMMISI reveals the map ("let me see"), WONAFYT summons a monster to you ("Wanna fight"), and BURNDAYRAZ will burn their... well, you get the point. Our man Stealthblade can go up to a monster, smack it silly until he can fight no more, and then poison it. Once poisoned, the monster cannot heal until Stealthblade fights it again. Stealthblade can now go off exploring the dungeon to regain mana and health to kill the monster. This enables him to fight monsters of much higher level than he is, gaining loads of experience! Once our man Stealthblade has beaten a normal dungeon, the APHEELSIK Glyph will sometimes appear in dungeons regardless of the chosen character class, and is one of the best glyphs you can find!
11. You should always explore the dungeon as early as possible, revealing all hidden tiles you can possibly reach before commencing battle with any of the monsters.

Answer: false

This is the inclination of beginners: scout out the area before making any decision. Unfortunately, it will only lead to an early death. Exploration is the primary way to recover your health and mana, since potions are very scarce and level-ups can be far-apart.

The game restores your health and mana for each tile you explore. If the dungeon is explored too early, you may easily run out of tiles to explore later, when you need to heal up for the fight with the dungeon boss. Part of the trick in this game is to know when to explore and when to avoid exploration as much as possible. And ALWAYS make sure you have tiles left to explore before starting a fight.
12. A holy Human Paladin named "Xandrion of Flamm" has encountered a monster in the dungeon. The monster's special ability is "PETRIFICATION". What should Xandrion avoid, if at all possible?

Answer: Attacking it directly while he has less than 50% health remaining.

Petrification is the natural advantage of Gorgons. If Xandrion's health is below 50% when he makes a melee attack on the Gorgon, it will immediately kill him - even if its attack strength it not high enough to bring Xandrion's health to 0. Fortunately, Gorgons are much less tough than other monsters, so they can be easily killed by fireballs or characters who can cheat death during combat.

The boss Gorgon monster, "Medusa", will petrify you if you are even a LITTLE BIT injured (below 100% health), which makes it very difficult to defeat without lots of healing or otherwise cunning tactics!
13. Winning the Challenge Dungeons with a variety of different character classes will add permanent bonuses that improve your future performance. Which of the following challenge dungeons, when won, increases the number of shops that appear in any dungeon you play?

Answer: The Factory

For every three different character classes you use to defeat the Factory, the number of shops spawned in ANY dungeon increases by one. This can be extremely helpful, as it increases the choices of magical items you can buy, as well as slightly increasing the chance of getting more good items than weak ones. Other Challenge Dungeons offer similar benefits - I'll let you find out for yourself.

A Ranked Game is a harder version of the "Normal" dungeon, where your score will be compared to that of other players around the world. The Gauntlet is a "bragging rights" game which gets harder and harder each time you play it. How many times do you think you can beat the Gauntlet?
14. Once you've unlocked all the available character classes, a "Campaign-style" dungeon becomes available. It is called "The Siege of Lothlorien". How many dungeons does it contain?

Answer: Three

The Siege of Lothlorien is the hardest of all challenges - you play 3 dungeons in a row, with three different Elf characters (including an Elf Berserker in the last dungeon, which is ridiculously difficult to play even in a normal dungeon!). The last boss you fight is a super Goat, called "Gharbad the- whoa!", who can kill you with a single strike and has massive resistance to magic. Regardless, some players have actually beaten this campaign, though (like all other parts of this game), you must be pretty lucky to get all the correct gods and glyphs to beat each dungeon in the sequence.
15. How much does it cost to play "Desktop Dungeons"?

Answer: It's free

Perhaps the best thing about "Desktop Dungeons" is that it's absolutely free! So grab a copy and start playing!
