Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Flight simulators are one of the more popular simulator games. Let's face it; who doesn't harbour a desire to fly a 747!? Which of these flight sims is open source software and available for free?

Answer: FlightGear

'FlightGear' is an open source flight simulator which is free to download. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. The idea for 'FlightGear' came about due to the fact that it was difficult to modify or add to commercial flight simulators to better suit the needs or wants of the users.
2. Along with flight sims, train simulators are also popular - which of the following is NOT the title of a real train simulator game?

Answer: Worlds of Steam

'Worlds of Steam' is not a real train simulator game. Of the other three 'Trainz' is developed by N3V Games, 'Railworks' by railsimulator.com and 'Microsoft Train Simulator', unsurprisingly, by Microsoft. All three simulators let the player control a variety of steam, diesel and electric trains from around the world.

There are also numerous add ons for the games, both commercial and user made, which expand the routes and trains available.
3. Not all simulators take themselves too seriously, which simulator style game tasks players with building and running a visitor attraction all under the watchful eye of a guide called "Buzzy"?

Answer: 'Theme Park World' (called 'Sim Theme Park' in the US)

'Theme Park World' was released in 1999 by Electronic Arts as a follow up to the popular 1994 game 'Theme Park'. It was originally released for only for Windows PCs but a Mac version and console versions for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 followed.

The game tasks players with creating and running their own theme park. It is quite an accessible simulator being aimed at children as much as adults. "Buzzy" is a black ball who sits at the top of the screen and gives the player advice, informs them of problems and congratulates them when they do something well.
4. 'OMSI: The Omnibus Simulator' is a real simulator game.

Answer: True

'OMSI: The Omnibus simulator' is a bus simulator for Windows PCs released in 2011. The game sees the player drive buses in the Spandau area of West Berlin in the 1980s.
5. What type of vehicles does the player control in the simulator called 'Steel Beasts'?

Answer: Tanks

'Steel Beasts' was released in 2000 and won numerous awards and accolades. It is a very realistic simulator with custom versions being used by a number of armies for training purposes. A sequel to 'Steel Beasts' was planned but work has been suspended in order for the developer to focus on the professional version for its military clients.
6. 'Simlish' the fictional "language" spoken by characters in 'The Sims' made its debut in which game?

Answer: SimCopter

'SimCopter' is a helicopter simulation game developed by Maxis and released in 1996. The player is control of a helicopter and must carry out jobs around the city, these include fire fighting, medical evacuations and riot control.

'Simlish' is a nonsense language which was developed through experimentation with fractured Ukrainian, French, Latin, Finnish, English, Fijian, Cebuano, and Tagalog. Originally the idea had been to create 'Simlish' by playing with the Navajo language but it was decided that a nonsense language would leave what was being said was left to the player's imagination. Although it made its debut in 'SimCopter' 'Simlish' is more commonly heard in 'The Sims' series of games.
7. 'Chemical Spillage Simulator', 'Street Cleaning Simulator' and 'Gardening Simulator' are all names of real games that have been published?

Answer: True

8. A simulator that sees you take on the role as the head of a cycling team, 'Pro Cycling Manager 2013' was the official PC game of which sporting event?

Answer: Tour de France

'Pro Cycling Manager 2013' is the latest in a series of cycling management games developed by the French company Cyanide. It is the official PC game of the Tour de France with a new version of the game being released each year at the same time as the Tour.

The player takes on the role of a "directeur sportif" with a professional cycling team and must manage the team successfully in order to win races.
9. Which of these is the title of a real simulator game? (The others I've just made up!)

Answer: Airport Firefighter Simulator

In 'Airport Fire Fighter Simulator' the player takes on the role of an airport fire fighter and has to respond to incidents as they occur. The game also lets players drive a number of different fire trucks. It was published for Windows PCs by Excalibur Publishing.
10. Released in 2013, the fifth installment for PC of which simulation franchise was plagued with problems?

Answer: SimCity

The 2013 release of 'SimCity' had been highly praised for its graphics and game play in the media and at conventions prior to its release, however following release there were major problems with the game. These problems primarily related to the need for a continuous connection to EA's servers in order to play the game but EA did not have the necessary server capacity for the number of players wishing to play the game resulting in problems and network outages for players.
