George Grenville was prime minister 1763-65, his son William was PM 1806-07. William Pitt the Elder was PM 1766-68. His son, Pitt the Younger became prime minister at the age of 24, the youngest person ever to hold the office. He was PM 1783-1801 and 1804-06.

His talented and ambitious daughter was prime minister 1966-77 and 1980-84 until she was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards four months after ordering the Indian army to storm the Sikh Golden Temple.

Rajiv was prime minister 1984-89. He was assassinated by a Tamil nationalist in 1991 while campaigning in a general election. Originally an airline pilot, Rajiv might never have gone into politics at all had his brother Sanjay not died in a plane crash in 1980. Until his death Sanjay was a prominent politician and had been widely tipped to succeed his mother as prime minister.

Rajiv's widow, Sonia, led the Congress Party to general election victory in 2004 but after days of speculation declined the post of prime minister due to criticism over her Italian origins. Rajiv's son, Rahul was elected as an MP at that same election. Other members of the family who have been involved in poltics include Rajiv's daughter, Priyanka, as well as Sanjay's widow, Maneka, and their son, Varun.
