Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The famous Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez is best known internationally for pioneering which literary genre?

Answer: Magical realism

Two of Marquez's most famous works are "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Love in the Time of Cholera". He is one of, if not the, most famous authors of magical realism.

Magical realism is a literary movement where the lives of ordinary (almost boring) people and places are interrupted by a supernatural element. Often, the supernatural element is subtle and characterized by events that seem impossible rather than some more overt magical element.
2. Constanta, Venus, Saturn and Mamaia are all popular Black Sea resorts in which Eastern European country?

Answer: Romania

Romania is one of the many countries that borders the Black Sea. The country's eastern coast line lies entirely on the Black Sea and world famous resorts line up and down the coast. Mamaia is the most popular of these resort cities but the main airport in the region is in Constanta. Many of the cities are named after Greek or Roman gods.
3. In Mongolian culture, what is a yurt or ger?

Answer: A type of tent

Yurts or gers are a type of tent made from felt. It can be folded up and easily relocated to another place for quick movement. Many Mongolians still live in yurts, even in large cities and towns. In Mongolian the word ger also means home and gerlekh is the word for marrying because it references how two people make a new home together as one.
4. The Palais Augarten is the home of which musicians who were founded by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I in 1498?

Answer: Vienna Boys' Choir

The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the most famous of its type in the world. Despite its name, members do not have to be from either Vienna or Austria, though the vast majority of them are. The boys, aged from 10 to 14, are divided into four traveling bands each one named after a classical Austria composer.

There are roughly 100 members total at any given time. The choir began as a loose royal court choir but has since become a nonprofit organization. The Palais Augarten is the headquarters of the choir and has been since after World War II.

It also serves as a boarding school for the members and potential members.
5. Actor Djimon Hounsou and singer Angelique Kidjo are two of the biggest celebrities from what tiny African nation?

Answer: Benin

Djimon Hounson is a Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated film actor. He might be best known for his roles as Juba in "Gladiator", Joseph Cinque in "Amistad" and Korath in "Guardians of the Galaxy". He was born in the city of Cotonou when Benin was still called Dahomey. His family left Benin for France and then Hounsou left France for the United States.

Angelique Kidjo was also born in Cotonou and is considered one of Africa's most famous singers. She is sometimes referred to as Africa's prima donna. She primarily sings gospel, soul and jazz. She is known for mixing American pop with traditional African music. She sings in many different languages including English, French and Yoruba.
6. Which of the following is NOT part of a traditional Tongan funeral ceremony?

Answer: Self-flagellation

Self flagellation is not part of the traditional Tongan funeral ceremony. Funerals are large even in Tonga, especially upon the death of a king or other important person. Regardless of who the deceased is, it is customary for mourners to wear ta'ovala, which are traditional Tongan mats or dress like clothing. Ta'ovala are everyday Tongan clothes but special ones are worn for funerals. Mourners who are close relatives tend to wear coarse ta'ovala that are generally larger than normal and may be covered with reeds. Mourners who are not may wear finer ta'ovalas. When the king dies, all Tongans are expected to wear the coarse ones.

Black funeral clothes are part of a Tongan funeral and have been since the islands were Christianized. Black is typically worn on the upper half of the body, either as a shirt or armband.

Umus are earth ovens that rather labor intensive to build. They are traditionally built by relatives of the deceased. The umu is then used to cook the funeral for the feast after the funeral.
7. In Jamaican Rastafari culture, what is "ital"

Answer: Unprocessed food

In Rastafari, followers are supposed to eat unprocessed, often vegetarian, food referred to as ital. Though such dietary restrictions are not mandatory. Another common, though not mandatory, aspect of the movement is not cutting one's hair and wearing them in dreadlocks.

Though commonly called Rastafarianism, the movement is properly called Rastafari and some followers consider the word Rastafarianism taboo because it is relating it to Babylonian cultures. Rastafari resembles a combination of traditional African, Caribbean and Christian cultures.
8. Hari Merdeka or Merdeka Day celebrates the independence of which Asian nation from Britain on August 31?

Answer: Malaysia

Hari Merdeka literally means Independence Day in Malaysian. It celebrates the nation's independence from Britain on August 31, 1957. Each year, the Hari Merdeka celebrations have a theme to them. 2016's theme was Single Minded Malaysia. Non-Malaysians sometimes incorrectly call Hari Merdeka Malaysia Day. Malaysia Day is September 16 when the Malaysian Federation was formed in 1963.
9. Glogi is a Finnish spiced wine beverage that is traditionally served at what holiday?

Answer: Christmas

Glogi or glogg is a wine spiced nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon or other earthy spices. It is usually served warm and may have almonds or raisins in it. While it is a traditional Christmas drink, it is also increasingly popular around Halloween time. Mulled or spiced wines are popular throughout Scandinavia.
10. In the African nation of Burundi, what event is the "kivivuga amazina"?

Answer: Poetry contest

Kivivuga amazina is a poetry contests featuring cattle ranchers and farmers of Burundi.
