Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The road is SS38. You can choose to climb 1560 metres (5118 ft) riding for 22 km from Bormio, or to defy 48 hairpins from Prato, climbing 1808 metres (5931 ft). What legendary pass is this?

Answer: Stelvio or Stilfsjoch

The Stelvio Pass Road was designed by architect Carlo Donegani, and opened in 1825, linking Tyrol and Lombardy, then parts of the Habsburg Empire. The summit is at 2758 metres (9045 ft) and often has been the highest point in the Giro d'Italia bike race, called the "Cima Coppi", so named after the Italian champion Fausto Coppi.
2. At 2770 metres (9068 ft), what is the Pass in the French Alps that can be climbed on the North side from Bourg-Saint-Maurice or on the South side from Bonneval-sur-Arc?

Answer: Iseran

Iseran, in Savoie, is the highest paved pass in the Alps. The Route de la Bonette is higher (2802 m or 9193 ft), but only because an additional piece of road has been built around the mountain top: the actual Bonette Pass is 2715 metres (8907 ft) high.
The pass is part of the "Route des Grandes Alpes", a tourist itinerary that passes also through the Col d'Izoard, Galibier, Bonette, Vars and Cayolle.
3. Route D902 goes up to 2642 metres (8668 ft), reaching one of the most classical "cols" of the Tour de France. Starting from Valloire or from the Lautaret, can you tell me the name of this French giant?

Answer: Galibier

The ascent is 8.5 km from the Col du Lautaret from South and 18 km from Valloire on the North side. With a car one can use the tunnel under the pass, but with a bike one has to climb the very steep road to the top.
4. The B161 road is probably the hardest in Austria: 10 km with an average slope of 12,53% reaching the top at 1970 metres (6463 ft). What's the name of this terrible climb?

Answer: Kitzbüeler Horn

With 28 hairpins, no shade, and 1278 metres to climb, this road is absolute hell. And a wonderful challenge for every cyclist.
5. Route D974 in France crosses this mountain, described as "Witches' Cauldron", or "An Ascending Desert". 1912 metres (6273 ft) high, 1500 metres (4921 ft) to climb from Malaucène or from Bédoin, which mountain is this?

Answer: Mont Ventoux

"Ventoux" means "windy". The Mistral blows on the top for 130 days a year, making the climb harder and dangerous.
Many stories surround this mountain. Italian poet Francesco Petrarca climbed it in 1336 and found inspiration for his most famous poem. British cyclist Tom Simpson tragically found his death there instead, in the 1967 Tour de France.
6. If you start from Le Bourg d'Oisans in Isère, and you ride your bike for 13 km to the top at 1803 metres, following the road that's maybe the most famous in the history of bike races, where are you heading to?

Answer: Alpe d'Huez

On average, 300 amateur cyclists climb the Alpe d'Huez every day of the year. For this reason I do not recommend to go with a car or a motorbike: you'd be cursed all the way up.
7. Starting from Ovaro in Friuli, in the Northeast of Italy, this road rises for 1200 metres with an average slope of 12%: one of the hardest in Europe. It's name?

Answer: Zoncolan

Until 2003, when it was chosen for the Giro d'Italia, Zoncolan (1735 metres or 5740 ft) was practically unknown. Now it is not only known, but notorious among professional and amateur cyclists. There's also the "easier" eastern side, from Paluzza, whose average slope is only 9%.
8. You're in the heart of the Pyrénées, and following Route D935 you are heading to the most famous pass of the region, at 2215 metres (6939 ft), featured almost in every Tour de France. What pass am I talking about?

Answer: Tourmalet

All the other roads in the multiple choice are beautiful climbs in the Hautes-Pyrénées, but the Col du Tourmalet is the king. Both sides, the average is 7.4%.
9. Two tunnels have been dug just to avoid the National Road 2 that climbs this pass in Switzerland: the Rail Tunnel opened in 1882 and the Road Tunnel opened in 1980. But for cyclist, there's still a paved road going up to 2106 metres (6909 ft). What's the name of this pass that connects Airolo to Andermatt with a road in use since the 13th Century?

Answer: Gotthard

The old paved road on the south side, passing through Tremola, is for sure the most rewarding. Not very hard with an average slope of 7.1% it gives the impression of pedallng into history.
Motorbikes and cars can go up the pass using the paved road.
10. Near the romantic shores of Lake Como, there's a road called Valassina that climbs up to one of the most famous passes in Italy, despite its modest height: 754 metres (2474 ft). On the top, a small church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, patroness of the cyclists. The name of this pass, please?

Answer: Ghisallo

The climb starts from the beautiful town of Bellagio, and it is very hard only at the beginning, reaching 11%.
The Ghisallo is a must in every edition of the "Giro di Lombardia" that closes the racing season.
The shrine of "Madonna del Ghisallo" hosts bikes and jerseys owned by champions of the past. Since 2000, a museum was built nearby.
