Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The white wedding dress became popular after who wore one to her own wedding in 1840?

Answer: Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria popularized white wedding dresses when she wore one on her own wedding to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on February 10, 1840. Victoria rejected the ermine-trimmed robes that were a precedent set by past brides such as Princess Charlotte, and instead chose a white silk-satin crinoline-style court wedding dress.

The dress was constructed by Mrs. Mary Bettans, and it set a tradition which continues to this day.

2. Mario Cuomo once said, "I am a trial lawyer. Matilda says that at dinner on a good day I sound like an affidavit." What is an affidavit?

Answer: a written sworn declaration

Mario Cuomo (1932-2015), the Governor of New York (1983-1994), was married to Matilda for sixty years. That makes the former First Lady of New York an expert on what her husband sounded like at supper. An affidavit is a statement, made in writing, confirmed by an oath or affirmation, sometimes sworn before an official, which may then be used as evidence in court.

The noun comes directly from the past tense form of the Medieval Latin verb "affidare" meaning "he has sworn on oath." The same Latin root is the source of the Modern English words "fiancé" and "fiancée" (albeit with a detour through French).

9. Magdalena Andersson made history by being appointed the first female prime minister of which country on 24 November 2021, only to resign a few hours later on the same day?

Answer: Sweden

Despite having had women's suffrage for a century, Sweden was the only Nordic state to have never had a female leader. Andersson, leader of the centre-left Swedish Social Democratic Party, received a standing ovation upon being elected prime minister by the Swedish parliament.

The Swedish Social Democratic Party, in a two-party coalition with the centre-left Green Party, won government, despite receiving a minority of the parliamentary vote. However, her coalition's proposed budget was rejected, and the parliament instead voted for a budget proposed by the far-right Sweden Democrats.

After Andersson announced that she would govern with this budget, the Green party objected that they could not accept a budget proposed by a far-right party and announced its withdrawal from the governing coalition.

This led Andersson to announce her resignation, only seven hours after being appointed, based on a constitutional practice that a coalition government should resign when one party quits, stating, "I don't want to lead a government whose legitimacy will be questioned."
