The regiment was formed in 1656 by Charles II whilst in exile following the execution of his father, Charles I. After his defeat by Oliver Cromwell's forces at the battle of Worcester, Charles II was forced to flee to France.

Answer: The First Regiment of Foot Guards

They gained the name of the Grenadier Guards later, in 1815.

The First Regiment of Foot of Guards defeated the Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. They then took the name of the Grenadier Guards, as well as the tradition of wearing a ceremonial bearskin headdress which continues to this day.
