Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which German company produced the R32 motorcycle in 1923 and by 1932 were producing the 3/20 car?

Answer: BMW

BMW started out making aircraft engines, of which they produced thousands during WWI, but at the end of the war, they were forced to stop production according to the terms of the Versailles Treaty. They diversified into making agricultural equipment from 1918, and began making motorcycles as the terms of the treaty began to be lifted.
2. Which company, well known for motorcycle production, has supplied engines to Formula 1 teams Jordan, Tyrrell and Arrows?

Answer: Yamaha

Yamaha first entered F1 in 1989, when they were the engine supplier for the Zakspeed team. Yamaha power was disappointing for the drivers however as Aguri Suzuki didn't qualify for a single race and Bernd Schneider managed to qualify for just two races, in both of which he retired.

The best season for Yamaha was the 1994 season with Tyrrell when drivers Ukyo Katayama and Mark Blundell managed nine top ten finishes between them, the highest being Blundell's third place at the Spanish grand prix.
3. BSA brought us cars such as the Scout in 1935 and motorcycles such as the Bantam in 1948, but what was the company originally set up to manufacture in 1861?

Answer: Firearms

BSA stands for Birmingham Small Arms, and the company originally produced guns before expanding into bicycle manufacture in 1880. They moved into car production in 1901 and motorcycle manufacturing began in 1910. Their motorcycles were so popular that in 1911, 1912 and 1913, they sold every motorcycle they produced.
4. Honda is well known for its motorcycles, but actually began producing cars several years before they manufactured a bike ?

Answer: False

The first Honda automobile was the T360 pick up truck in 1963, followed by S500 sports car later that same year. The company's first motorcycle though was the D-Type (Dream) which was available from 1949. Just 15 years later in 1964, Honda was the biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the world.
5. Which one-time tractor manufacturer, probably more famous for its high performance cars, produced a very limited edition 1,000cc motorcycle in the 1980s?

Answer: Lamborghini

Ferruccio Lamborghini started manufacturing his tractors way back in 1948 and after opening two more factories which made oil heaters and air conditioning units, he started his automobile company in 1963, providing instant competition for Ferrari which had started in 1939.

The Lamborghini Design 90 motorcycle was made largely by Boxer Bikes and used a Kawasaki engine and sold for £10,300 ($13,500) in 1986, so it certainly wasn't cheap. Actual sales figures remain unknown, with Lamborghini saying they had orders for 50 bikes, but only built six, yet other industry sources saying that as many as 50 were built and Lamborghini are trying to increase the mystique surrounding the venture.
6. Which giant of both motorcycle and automobile manufacturing started life as a company making weaving looms for the silk industry?

Answer: Suzuki

Michio Suzuki realised early on that for his company to survive it needed to diversify and by 1939, they had produced several prototype cars, and were ready for production. Unfortunately for Michio, WWII scuppered his plans and after the war, he returned to loom manufacture, but in a stroke of good fortune, the textile market suffered a downward turn in the early 1950s, causing him to look at diversification once more, and resulting in the manufacture of a clip on engine for bicycles. From this the motorcycle business began and by 1955, Suzuki made their first car, the Suzuki Suzulight.
7. The C-01 was a motorcycle built under licence in Germany by engineering group Kodewa in 2014. The name of which sports car manufacturer, known for their Elise and Esprit models adorns this beauty?

Answer: Lotus

The C-01 is an incredible piece of engineering that was designed by Daniel Simon, who also designed the "light cycles" used in the 2010 movie "Tron: Legacy". It uses a 1.195cc KTM engine, capable of producing 200 brake horse power and the initial production run will be just 100 bikes, which will retail at a little over £104,000 ($137,000) each.
8. Who started building motorcycles in 1951 and then in 2008, branched out into car production with the X-Bow sports car?

Answer: KTM

Austrian company KTM have a long off road motorcycle pedigree, winning over 260 world championships in enduro, motocross and supermoto between 1974 and 2016. In 1994 they began making street bikes with the launch of the Duke 620 and in 2008 they gave the world the first street-legal car with a full carbon fibre monocoque when they unveiled the X-Bow.

These cars have proved so successful that KTM have had to build a new production facility near Graz, just to keep up with demand.
9. Which winner of the World Rally Championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002 won at the Isle of Man TT races in 1907?

Answer: Peugeot

Peugeot were untouchable in the WRC between 2000 and 2002 with the Peugeot 206, a championship they had also won in 1985 and 1986 with the Peugeot 205. In 2016, they entered back into the world of motorcycle racing when they took part in the Moto 3 championship, where they managed a creditable fourth place, a feat they repeated in 2017.
10. Although never commercially available, what was the name of the 8.3 litre Dodge motorcycle that the company unveiled in 2003?

Answer: Tomahawk

Only nine Tomahawks were ever made and debate still continues over whether it is a car or a motorcycle. Although riding position and cornering is definitely as it is on a motorcycle, the fact that it has four wheels puts it, for some in the car category. Add to that the incredible Dodge Viper V10 engine which powers it and whatever you class it as, I class it as a beast.

The Tomahawk is totally not road legal and if Dodge's claims of an estimated top speed of 400 mph (640 km/h) are to be believed, that may be something to be thankful for.
