Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city is served by Schiphol Airport?

Answer: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This airport is very close to town, and one new runway is so far from the main terminal that it is nicknamed the "Belgium Runway". The name translates into English as "Ship Grave", as the land was reclaimed after being a frequent flood plain.
2. Cheddi Jagan International Airport serves which of these cities?

Answer: Georgetown, Guyana

The only South American destination besides Guyana is Suriname. All other flights are to the Caribbean, the UK, and the United States. Cheddi Jagan was a Guyanese labor activist who became the first opposition president in 30 years before dying in 1997.
3. O.R. Tambo International Airport is the new name for the airport in which of these cities?

Answer: Johannesburg, South Africa

Formerly Jan Smuts International Airport, this airport got its name change approved in 2006 to avoid memories of apartheid, as Jan Smuts was a white politician. Oliver Tambo was an anti-apartheid activist. Of course, it is the main hub for South African Airways.
4. Bob Hope Airport serves a large metropolitan area, but is located in which of these cities?

Answer: Burbank, California

Formerly Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport, and under the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena airport authority, it was renamed Bob Hope Airport after the legendary comedian passed away. He lived close to Burbank in a neighborhood of Los Angeles called Toluca Lake.
5. Which city is home to Baiyun International Airport?

Answer: Guangzhou, China

Oddly enough, the former airport was located in urban Guangzhou's "Baiyun" neighborhood, but was later moved to a more rural location, keeping the name of its previous locale 20 miles to the South. It is the hub for China Southern Airlines.
6. La Aurora International Airport serves which of the following places?

Answer: Guatemala City, Guatemala

This airport is on Iberia's Madrid-San Salvador-Guatemala City route. During 2007-08, much needed renovations were completed.
7. Which of these cities is home to Rafic Hariri International Airport?

Answer: Beirut, Lebanon

The airport was named after Rafic Hariri, Lebanon's PM, who was assasinated in 2005. The gateway to this wonderful city has been closed and rebuilt many times throughout history. It is the hub for Lebanon's Middle East Airlines (MEA).
8. Toncontín International Airport is located in which city?

Answer: Tegucigalpa, Honduras

The notoriously dangerous approach to this airport got a little better after the closest hill to the runway was removed. Consideration has been given to relocating the airport out of the cramped Tegucigalpa urban zone, to an airbase some miles away.
9. Centrair Airport is in which of these locales?

Answer: Nagoya, Japan

The airport was built on a man-made island and opened in 2005. The name Centrair is short for "Central Japan International Airport", although the blandly western-sounding name doesn't immediately evoke Japan for most people.
10. Where in the world is El Prat Airport located?

Answer: Barcelona, Spain

Ah, if I could only be landing there right now. Its name is derived from the jurisdiction south of Barcelona called El Prat de Llobregat.
