Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ZIP codes were put in place to help deliver mail. In what year was the system created?

Answer: 1963

ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. With the introduction of the system, each post office got a five-digit ZIP code, which corresponded to a geographical region. For example, 43210 was assigned to a specific section of Columbus, Ohio. Numbers under 10000 got a leading zero, like 02115 for a specific section of Boston. Not all five-digit numbers were used, though.
2. Which major city contains ZIP codes ranging from 10001 to 10045?

Answer: New York City

The first digit of a ZIP code determines the area of the United States that it is in. For example, ZIP codes beginning with 1 are in New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The next two digits determine where it is on a smaller scale. Zip codes beginning with 100 are meant for New York City, specifically Manhattan. However, not all numbers in the range are used.
3. Suburbs of major cities do not have 100 ZIP codes assigned to each of them. Instead, the 100 ZIP codes will be used for a group of suburbs. For example, while ZIP code 90210 is famous for Beverly Hills, California, 90230 is part of Culver City, and 90292 is part of Marina del Rey. Of which city in California are these cities suburbs?

Answer: Los Angeles

ZIP codes beginning with 900 or 901 are assigned to the city of Los Angeles, while other third digits (beginning with 902, 903, 904, etc.) are for the suburbs of Los Angeles. However, a few cities can be in two regions at once, like Culver City having not only 90230 as a ZIP code, but also 90066.
4. In the mainland of the United States, 01001 is the lowest ZIP code for general purposes. However, if someone mailed a letter to 00901, where would it be sent?

Answer: San Juan, Puerto Rico

ZIP codes beginning with 006, 007, and 009 are assigned to Puerto Rico, while those beginning with 008 are assigned to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Alaska and Hawaii have their own ZIP codes. Alaska has the highest ZIP codes, up to 99950 in Ketchikan.
5. There is a large area of land where the first digit of a ZIP code begins with "8". In the mainland of the United States, the first digit of "8" has the largest area assigned for any first digit of ZIP codes. Which area has all or almost all ZIP codes beginning with "8"?

Answer: Utah and the surrounding states

The seven states with ZIP codes beginning with "8" are Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho. In addition, the city of El Paso has ZIP codes beginning with "8" (specifically 885). Minnesota has ZIP codes beginning with "5", Alabama with "3", and Texas (except El Paso) with "7".
6. Some ZIP codes in the United States are not for general use. Some of them begin with 090-098, 202-205, 375, 399, 733, and 962-966. Which one of these is NOT assigned to any reserved ZIP codes?

Answer: Corporations spread throughout the whole country

ZIP codes beginning with 090-098 and 962-966 are used for the military.

ZIP codes beginning with 202-205 are for government buildings in and near Washington DC. For example, even though the White House is in the region covered by 20006 (normally Washington DC has ZIP codes beginning with 200), the White House itself has a ZIP code of 20500.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has several ranges of ZIP codes, depending on its location in the country. However, most large corporations do not. For most corporations, each building of the corporation has a ZIP code based on its location.
7. Which state in the United States is assigned the most ZIP codes?

Answer: California

California is assigned ZIP codes ranging from 90000 to 96199, except those beginning with 909 and 929, with a total of 6000 possible ZIP codes. The second-largest number of ZIP codes assigned for a single state is 5000, for both Texas and New York (not counting the New York outliers of 00501 and 00544). California, Texas, and New York all have large populations, which is why those states have many ZIP codes.
8. The fewest number of ZIP codes assigned to any U.S. state is 200. Hawaii is one of those states, with only ZIP codes of 96700-96899 assigned to the state. Which state is the other state with only 200 ZIP codes assigned?

Answer: Rhode Island

Rhode Island is only assigned 02800-02999. Delaware has 300 (19700-19999), Alaska has 500 (95000-99999), and Idaho has 700 (83200-83899). U.S. Virgin Islands (00800-00899) and Guam (96900-96999) are territories that have 100 assigned ZIP codes each, but they are not states.
9. At which state border will you find the biggest difference in ZIP codes? On one side of the border there is 38197, and on the other side of the border, across the Mississippi River, there is 72376.

Answer: Arkansas-Tennessee

ZIP code 38197 is in Memphis, Tennessee, and ZIP code 72376 is in West Memphis, Arkansas. Other than Washington DC's Parcel Return, having ZIP codes beginning with 569, no borders other than the western borders of Tennessee and Mississippi have ZIP code differences of more than 30000 across the border.
10. What got introduced along with ZIP codes that is also used widely in the United States?

Answer: Official two-letter abbreviations for states

Before ZIP codes, there were no official two-letter abbreviations for states. Some were commonly used, but sometimes abbreviations would be more than two letters, and abbreviations could vary from person to person. Official abbreviations, made the use of state abbreviations convenient and consistent.

These two-letter abbreviations, like AL for Alabama, always had both letters capitalized. In addition to states, territories also got two-letter abbreviations, like PR for Puerto Rico and GU for Guam.
