I agree with Catreona. Hedwig's death was totally unecessary. Such a faithful owl getting killed off right at the end for no just reason. Snape's death was also touching, he grew up in a difficult situation, had a difficult childhood, turns good and becomes a spy (an unenviable type), never got the love of his life, and ended up being bitten to death by a Voldemort's snake. Hedwig's death was literally to save Harry's life. Snape killed the owl knowing that Hedwig would stay close to the real Harry and tip off the other Death Eaters as to which one was the real Potter. While sad, it served a big purpose. Reply #142. Nov 18 20, 8:45 AM |

Oh. Well, that explains it. But I still think that was really sad anyways. Reply #143. Nov 22 20, 6:21 AM |

Snape's death, while sad, was a redeeming one, and I could see how Rowling would see it as necessary plot-wise. As for many other deaths in the series, like Fred's and Hedwig's, I still bemoan them because they don't seem necessary. Of course, that's the way real life is, but still...! Reply #147.
