Hanks made his film debut with a minor role in the low-budget slasher movie "He Knows You're Alone" (1980). He gained a lead role in the television sitcom "Bosom Buddies" (1980-82) and appeared on "Happy Days" (1974-84) where he met the writers for "Splash" as well as Ron Howard, who directed the film. They entrusted him with his first cinematic lead role. The film was a significant financial success earning nearly $70 million at the box office and received a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Daryl Hannah first starred in "Summer Lovers" (1982) and she had a substantial role in "Blade Runner" (1982) although she is not listed as one of the stars. When Radha and Sita consoled each other with the state of affairs, true love was kindled. But of course their husbands found out, and Sita eloped. Radha tried to talk things over with Ashok, but during this conversation her gown caught fire and she had to flee with serious burns. The main actresses were Shabana Azmi as Radha and Nandita Das in the role of Sita. The Indian Central Board of Certification did allow the movie to be shown all over India (with an "adult" rating), but insisted that the character Sita was renamed Nita. The name Sita reminded them too much of the mythical Sita, the wife of the epic national hero Rama. The movie sparked several incidents in India with religious conservatives who objected to the theme of lesbian love. Deepa Mehta was born in Amritsar in 1950. Her movie "Fire" was the first in a trilogy, followed by "Earth" (1998) and "Water" (2005).

Craig Roberts played a college student and Sally Hawkins played his mother. "Lady in the Water" (2006) was directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starred Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard, with a minor role for Doug Jones. It tells about an apartment janitor meeting a fairy lady swimming in the pool of the apartment building.
