Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 'Secret' film, based on a book by Frances Hodgson Burnett and released in 1993, featured the characters Mary, Dickon and Colin?

Answer: The Secret Garden

'The Secret Garden' tells the story of Mary Lennox (played by Kate Maberly), a little girl who has to move to Yorkshire to live with her uncle Archibald Craven, after her parents are killed in an earthquake (they die of cholera in the book). Mary is unhappy at first, but gradually learns to love the place she lives in after Martha, a servant, tells Mary about how Mrs Craven loved growing roses in her garden, and how Mr Craven locked the garden and hid the key after she died. Dickon Sowerby (played by Andrew Knott) is Martha's brother, who befriends Mary and gives her gardening tools after Mary finds the key to the garden. Colin Craven (played by Heydon Prowse) is Mary's ill cousin, who gradually becomes stronger after spending time in the garden.

Frances Hodgson Burnett also wrote 'A Little Princess' and 'Little Lord Fauntleroy'.
2. What is the central theme of Mike Leigh's 'Secrets & Lies'?

Answer: Adoption

'Secrets & Lies' focuses on Hortense Cumberbatch (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), who is adopted, and her efforts to track down her birth mother. Although Hortense herself is black, she discovers that Cynthia Purley (Brenda Blethyn), her birth mother, is white, and that her birth name was Elizabeth Purley.

Although Cynthia hangs up on Hortense at first, Hortense perseveres and the two eventually meet and become friends.
3. In 'The Secret of NIMH', which animals became more intelligent and able to use technology as a result of medical experimentation?

Answer: Rats

The rats in question are led by a wise old rat called Nicodemus, and live under a rose bush. They escaped from NIMH after experiments on them somehow increased their intelligence to human levels, hence why they are able to use electricity, rope and pulley systems, and other types of human technologies.
4. 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' was the only James Bond film where the titular hero was played by George Lazenby. What was the name of the 'Bond Girl' in this film, who marries Bond and is later shot dead?

Answer: Tracy di Vicenzo

Tracy di Vicenzo - real name Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo - is the daughter of the head of a Corsican crime syndicate. She calls herself Tracy because she feels the name Teresa is too saintly for her. She is saved by Bond while trying to commit suicide by drowning, and her father helps Bond track Ernst Stavro Blofeld down to Switzerland. Tracy and Bond get married, but their happiness is short-lived; Blofeld kills her in a drive-by shooting after the wedding, and she dies in Bond's arms. She was played by Diana Rigg.

As for the other answers: Kissy Suzuki (Mie Hama) appeared in 'You Only Live Twice'. Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman) was the Bond Girl in 'Goldfinger', and Tiffany Case (Jill St John) was, quite fittingly for a woman named after a jewellery company, in 'Diamonds Are Forever'.
5. In 'Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood', which of the Ya-Yas is played by Ellen Burstyn and is the mother of the heroine, the playwright Siddalee Walker?

Answer: Vivi

'The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood' is based on the book of the same name by Rebecca Wells. As a child in Louisiana, Vivi forms the titular secret society with her friends Caro, Teensy and Necie (who are played by Maggie Smith, Fionnula Flanagan and Shirley Knight respectively). Sidda and Vivi fall out after Sidda gives a magazine interview about her unhappy childhood.

The other Ya-Yas take matters into their own hands by kidnapping Sidda, showing her a scrapbook album her mother has made, from which the film gets its name, and telling her about Vivi's background in order to help her understand her mother.
6. A 1947 film, starring Danny Kaye in the title role and based on a James Thurber story, features 'The Secret Life of' a character who would go on to be synonymous with people who make up fantastic stories. Which character is this?

Answer: Walter Mitty

If someone is referred to as a 'Walter Mitty figure' it means they are a fantasist and make themselves out to be something they are not.

In the film, Mitty is an editor of pulp fiction magazines and an ineffectual type who daydreams about living all kinds of impossible and wonderful lives as a means of escaping from his boring real life, where he is constantly pushed around. However, he finds himself getting entangled in a real life adventure involving Dutch crown jewels, and gains the courage to stand up for himself.
7. 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' is the second film in the Harry Potter series. Throughout the film, several students fall victim to a mysterious creature, which petrifies them with its eyes. Which of these characters is lucky enough NOT to get petrified?

Answer: Neville Longbottom

Neville isn't the luckiest of characters, but he is the only one listed here who doesn't fall victim to the creature in question.

Spoilers: the creature is a basilisk, an enormous snakelike monster that can kill people who look it in the eye, as Moaning Myrtle found out the hard way when it looked at her. However, anyone who catches its gaze indirectly - e.g. through a mirror - is petrified rather than killed. Harry is able to communicate with it by speaking Parseltongue, the language of snakes. It was originally kept in the chamber as part of a plan to kill students from non-wizarding backgrounds, and is killed when Harry stabs it in the head and pulls out one of its fangs.
8. Which Spanish director directed 'La flor di mi secreto' ('The Flower of My Secret')?

Answer: Pedro Almodovar

In 'La flor di mi secreto', Leo Macias (Marisa Paredes) is a writer of romance novels and is married to a soldier stationed in Bosnia. Feeling constrained by her relationship with her difficult husband, she starts writing books with darker plots, which displeases her publishers, and becomes friends with a newspaper editor called Angel (Juan Echanove). Leo tries to kill herself after discovering that her husband is cheating on her with her best friend, and while in recovery at her mother's house, she receives a call from her publishers thanking her for two romances which she has no memory of writing. They turn out to have been written by Angel, who Leo ends up with.

Almodovar has won several awards for his films, including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for 'Todo sobre mi Madre' in 1999, and a Cannes Film Festival Award for 'Volver' in 2006. The plot of 'Volver' is actually based on a story Leo writes in 'La flor di mi secreto', about a woman who kills her husband and stores his body in a fridge after he tries to rape her daughter. The story in question ends up being made into a film after her maid's son finds her manuscript.
9. There is a short film spin-off of 'Kung-Fu Panda' called 'The Secrets of the Furious Five', in which Po the panda tells a class of students about the Furious Five's pasts and how they learned to be warriors. Which of these animals is NOT a member of the Furious Five?

Answer: Master Dragon

In the short, Master Tigress (Angelina Jolie) is revealed to have frightened off other children in the orphanage she grew up in due to her strength, and was eventually adopted by Master Shifu, who taught her to control her powers. Master Monkey (Jackie Chan) was a rebellious troublemaker in his youth, but calmed down after Grand Master Oogway defeated him in a fight. Master Mantis (Seth Rogen) used to be impatient and impulsive, but was cured of his bad habits after being kidnapped by crocodile bandits.

The other two members of the Furious Five are Master Viper (Lucy Liu) and Master Crane (David Cross). All five are animals which have martial arts styles named after them.
10. Which whistleblower was the main subject of a 2012 documentary film titled 'We Steal Secrets'?

Answer: Julian Assange

Or, to give the film its full title, 'We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks'. Julian Assange, who founded WikiLeaks, did not participate in the production of the film, although previous interview footage featuring him was used. According to an interview with executive producer Jemima Khan in 'The New Statesman', Assange did not approve of the title of the film, finding it too derogatory. the film covers the foundation of WikiLeaks, and the various events it leaked information about, such as the Icelandic financial collapse and the dumping of toxic waste in the Cote d'Ivoire.

Julian Assange was also played by Benedict Cumberbatch, of 'Sherlock' fame, in 'The Fifth Estate'. The film was based on a book by Daniel Domscheit-Berg aka Daniel Schmitt, a former Wikileaks spokesman.
