Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What movie tells the story of a young mechanic and a woman, who runs a small shop, falling in love, only to be separated by war?

Answer: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Released in 1964, "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" starred Catherine Deneuve as
Geneviève Emery and Nino Castelnuovo as Guy Foucher. Geneviève worked in her mother's umbrella shop, while Guy worked as a mechanic early in the movie. Told in four parts, it moves on to tell of their life together, apart, and back together. The movie was nominated for five Oscars, but won none.

2. This 1964 movie musical takes us on a journey with a young woman from Leadville, Colorado, as she searches for happiness. Which of these eponymous characters will eventually return home after being a passenger on the Titanic?

Answer: The Unsinkable Molly Brown

Though based on a real character, a fictional re-telling of her life started as a 1960 Broadway musical. It was adapted to film with Debbie Reynolds and Harve Presnell (the only actor to reprise his stage role).

As often happens much of the original Broadway score was not included in the film, and "He's My Friend" was created by Meredith Willson to add to the movie score.

3. What future child star had an earlier role as Miles in 1989's "Uncle Buck"?

Answer: Macaulay Culkin

This movie was released the year before Macaulay's breakout role in "Home Alone". "Uncle Buck", played by the wonderful John Candy, is called in as a last-minute sitter for his brother's three children when their parents must go out of town for a family emergency. As he is something of a ne'er-do-well, he has not been close to the family in the past.

John Candy was a generous spirit who was well-liked by everyone on set. According to IMDb, "During Miles' interrogation of Uncle Buck, John Candy wrote out the script's dialogue, and wore it atop his head so Macaulay Culkin could read the lines more quickly, and keep the pace of the scene very fast. (Note that this would be the take of the scene when the camera was set for close-ups of Miles)." I could include the dialog here, but it's far more effective when seen and heard. If you ever have the opportunity to watch this "interrogation", I encourage you to do so. You won't regret it!

4. In this 2010 movie, Samuel L. Jackson plays a special operative for the United States government. His duty is to interrogate a terrorist and obtain the whereabouts of nuclear weapons that have been hidden inside the United States. What is this movie?

Answer: Unthinkable

In "Unthinkable", Michael Sheen plays a U.S. special ops military member that recently converted to Islam. Sheen's character becomes radicalized by the U.S. military's killing of Muslim civilians, and has placed three nukes inside the United States. Samuel L. Jackson's character leaves no stone unturned in his attempt to obtain the information needed to locate where the nukes have been placed. Let's just say the movie has a R rating for a reason.

5. The 2006 movie "United 93" was directed by which acclaimed director?

Answer: Paul Greengrass

The powerful movie "United 93" was written and directed by Paul Greengrass who has also directed movies like "Captain Phillips" and "The Bourne Supremacy". The movie "United 93" was about the events that occurred on board United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. The movie was released to great critical acclaim and Greengrass was nominated for an Oscar for his direction. The movie starred Cheyenne Jackson, Peter Hermann and Christian Clemenson.

6. Ryan Bingham's job is to fly around the country terminating employees for other companies. Tasked with training a young, idealistic new hire, Ryan begins to rethink his life philosophy. Which of these actors plays Ryan Bingham in the movie "Up in the Air" (2009)?

Answer: George Clooney

Ryan (George Clooney) happily begins a casual relationship with a fellow frequent flyer, Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga). His next goal is to be the youngest person to earn ten million frequent flyer miles. He begins to question his unfettered life while training Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick).

The film was inspired by the novel of the same name, written by Walter Kirn while snowed in at a Montana ranch.

7. Despite being set in Ireland, filmed in Ireland, and based on an Irish novel, which film was banned in Ireland for 33 years?

Answer: Ulysses

Based on the James Joyce novel, this 1967 film adaptation met with censorship worldwide as well as being Oscar nominated. In New Zealand, it could only be shown to gender segregated audiences. In France and the UK, scenes were censored, cut, or shown without dialogue. In Ireland, it was banned outright until the year 2000 - that's an Irish record for the longest ban of the 20th century.

The issue was that it was considered pornographic, as the 1918 book had once been; although the book was condemned, leading to Joyce's self imposed exile, it had never itself been banned.

She has to get a job, and ends up becoming a nanny for Ray (Dakota Fanning). What movie has this 'childish' woman taking care of this 'grown-up' kid?

Answer: Uptown Girls

A funny, role-reversal film, "Uptown Girls" was released in 2003. Dakota Fanning was nominated for a Young Artist Award in 2004, but did not win.

10. In what "U" movie do we hear of the character Keyser Söze?

Answer: The Usual Suspects

"Keyser Söze" is included on many lists of top film villains. Roger "Verbal" Kint (Kevin Spacey), a small-time con artist with cerebral palsy, is one of only two survivors of a massacre and fire on a ship docked in Los Angeles. Kint's interrogation by Customs Agent Dave Kujan, who's attempting to solve the case, makes up the body of the film. Incorporating frequent flashbacks and many red herrings, Kint's story of Turkish crime boss Keyser Söze, who allegedly blackmailed him and his co-conspirators, evolves. I won't spoil the twist ending, but the film gave us the memorable quote, "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." Kevin Spacey won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his role.
