Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At Crufts, English and American Cocker Spaniels are shown as one breed?

Answer: False

There are definite differences.
2. Which AKC group are American Cocker Spaniels shown in?

Answer: Sporting

Traditionally, they have been a favorite for Best in Group.
3. American Cocker Spaniels in the AKC have three shots at winning Best in Group as opposed to one or two of other dog breeds.

Answer: True

This is due to the three different showable varieties which include Blacks, ASCOBs, and Partis.
4. Name one of the AKC-showable varieties of American Cocker Spaniels?

Answer: parti-color

It is interesting where each coloration falls within the three categories...
5. ASCOB means any solid color other than black.

Answer: True

6. Cocker spaniels are born with stumpy tails.

Answer: False

They are docked shortly after birth.
7. A normal American Cocker Spaniel has what type of disposition as per AKC guidelines?

Answer: merry and lively

Sadly, the aggressive and vicious moodiness attributed to some Cocker Spaniels is due to the poor breeding and mistreatment of puppy mills where the spaniel is a popular dog to mass breed.
8. Considering their intelligence, how easily is an American Cocker Spaniel trained?

Answer: very easily--can do many dog sports

This is very true. You see American Cocker Spaniels show up in Conformation, Sporting Events, Obedience, and they are very popular in Agility. American Cocker Spaniels make good pets with good watchdog abilities and a devotion to 'their family.' They are also used frequently as drug sniffing dogs at airports and the like.

The flip side, because they are so smart, they tend to be sneaky...stealing food off of the table, secretly chewing things up, letting themselves out of houses and over or under fences, etc.
9. How old do American Cocker Spaniels need to be before they can be shown in the AKC?

Answer: 6 months

This is the age when ALL dogs are permitted to be shown. However, a little longer in the wait may be better for a cocker spaniel, show-wise in my opinion.
10. What paw shape is desired on an American Cocker Spaniel?

Answer: round

Breed standard states that the rounded paw is desired.
11. How tall should adult cocker spaniel bitches be at the shoulder?

Answer: 14 inches

My pup is perfect in that range...
12. American Cocker Spaniels were bred down from which breed?

Answer: English Cocker Spaniel

13. Blacks and Black and Tans are shown together in the AKC.

Answer: True

I do believe that the Blacks have the advantage as the most favored of all Cocker Spaniels in the show ring.
14. Originally, the cocker spaniels dogs were used to flush what?

Answer: woodcocks

Although they could be used for all these things, their original design was intended to flush birds...woodcocks to be exact.
15. Which of the following colors of a cocker spaniel is NOT acceptable in an AKC show ring?

Answer: sable

Supposedly, there was some poor breeding in these colors and another dog was tossed into the mix that produced this color. Structurally, they look the same. There has been many different opinions as to where the coloration came from that has been hotly disputed in throughout the Spaniel Clubs.

The color can be shown in Canada and other places worldwide. It used to be recognized by the AKC...however it no longer is.
