Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the below statements is correct?

Answer: Cavaliers come in only four different colours.

Cavaliers are excellent for elderly because they are in fact quite calm. Cavaliers do not make good guard dogs at all! They are far too nice to strangers! Although Cavaliers have a relatively long coat, a brush weekly should be enough to keep their hair settled.
2. Cavaliers have a tendency to become overweight easily if not exercised and fed properly.

Answer: True

Cavaliers need to have special attention to their weight when they age. As with any dog you should feed it a balanced diet for it to live a long, happy life.
3. Where did Cavaliers originally come from?

Answer: England

Cavaliers were a King Charles II favourite. They were used to warm laps in the English palaces.
4. Which of these diseases is common in Cavaliers?

Answer: Mitral valve disease

The heart has 4 chambers. There are two atria and two ventricles. When the heart is beating, the mitral valve makes sure the blood goes from the atria to the ventricles but when there is a failure in the mitral valve it lets some blood go back into the atria so the heart can't pump blood as easily.
5. Which one of these colours do Cavaliers come in?

Answer: Tricolour

Tricoloured Cavaliers are black, white and with a bit of tan over the eyes, on the cheeks and the bottom of ears and tail. Other colours in the Cavalier are ruby, black and tan and Blenheim which is red and white.
6. Cavaliers are easily injured if taken out for walks too regularly.

Answer: False

Cavaliers might get injured but aren't at any more risk of having an accident than any other dogs. Of course, when they are puppies you have to take care as with any other breed.
7. Mark and Lucy are looking for a dog that is not very destructive as they cannot afford to lose any valuables. They have a child aged 11 who is sensible. Could the Cavalier be the right dog for them?

Answer: Yes

Cavaliers are not particularly destructive unless stressed or not properly trained. They are also good with children who are sensible.
8. Which of these behavioral problems is most often seen in Cavaliers?

Answer: Separation anxiety

Cavaliers are so attached to their owners that if not trained properly they may have separation anxiety. If a dog is suffering from separation anxiety it may continuously howl or be destructive.
9. Cavaliers are very rare and are very rarely seen outside of England.

Answer: False

Cavaliers are slowly becoming overbred so you have to take care in choosing a healthy puppy. Chose a breeder who is keen on selling quality not quantity.
10. The Cavalier King Charles is classed in which group by both The Kennel Club, in the UK, and the American Kennel Club?

Answer: Toy

Because of its size, the Cavalier fits in the toy group, even though spaniels are classed as gundogs.
