The Greater Toronto Area has produced an extraordinary range of talent, from comedians and actors to musicians and television pioneers. The ten celebrities I chose to highlight (not an exhaustive list) all trace their origins to the Toronto region and have gone on to achieve national or international fame through their contributions to entertainment, music, television, and film.
Lorne Michaels began his career as a writer and broadcaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) before moving into television production and comedy writing. He is best known as the creator and longtime producer of "Saturday Night Live" (1975), a series that has launched the careers of generations of comedians and become one of the most influential programs in television history.
Neil Young began performing in Canadian bands during the 1960s before moving west and becoming part of the folk-rock scene that would shape his career. He became one of Canada's most influential musicians through songs such as "Heart of Gold" (1972) and "Old Man" (1972) and his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Catherine O'Hara got her start with Toronto's famed Second City comedy troupe before transitioning to television and film. She first rose to prominence on "Second City Television" (1976-84) and is perhaps best known today for her roles in "Home Alone" (1990), "Beetlejuice" (1988), and "Schitt's Creek" (2015-20).
Howie Mandel began performing stand-up comedy in Toronto comedy clubs, where his energetic style quickly attracted attention. He became widely known through "St. Elsewhere" (1982-88), later found success as the host of "Deal or No Deal" (beginning in 2005), and has remained a television mainstay for decades.
Mike Myers entered show business as a child actor before honing his comedic skills with Toronto's Second City troupe. International fame followed through "Saturday Night Live" (1989-95), "Wayne's World" (1992), the "Austin Powers" films (1997-2002), and his voice role as Shrek in the "Shrek" franchise (beginning in 2001).
Will Arnett pursued acting in New York before building a career in television and film through a series of supporting roles. He is best known for playing Gob Bluth in "Arrested Development" (2003-19), voicing Batman in "The LEGO Movie" (2014) and its sequels, and starring in "BoJack Horseman" (2014-20).
Drake first gained recognition as an actor on the teen drama "Degrassi: The Next Generation" (2001-15), where he portrayed Jimmy Brooks. After transitioning to music, he became one of the world's best-selling artists through albums such as "Take Care" (2011), "Nothing Was the Same" (2013), and "Views" (2016).
Stephen Amell began his career with guest appearances on television series before steadily moving into larger roles. He achieved international recognition as Oliver Queen in "Arrow" (2012-20), a series that served as the foundation for the interconnected "Arrowverse" of DC television shows.
The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) started by anonymously releasing songs online and building a devoted following through a series of acclaimed mixtapes. His distinctive sound propelled him to global stardom through hits such as "Can't Feel My Face" (2015) and "Blinding Lights" (2019).
Shawn Mendes first attracted attention by posting song covers on the social media platform Vine, quickly developing a large online following. He became a major pop star with songs such as "Stitches" (2015), "Treat You Better" (2016), and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" (2017), becoming one of Canada's most successful young recording artists.
The other Canadian celebrities from the list, while excellent in their own rights, were all born in provinces other than Ontario. Ryan Reynolds, Michael Bublé, and Seth Rogen all hail from British Columbia, Joni Mitchell, Michael J. Fox, and Nathan Fillion are from Alberta, and William Shatner and Sarah McLachlan are from Quebec and Nova Scotia, respectively.
