Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Vince Vaughn wasn't part of this coffee klatsch

The television show "Friends" just wouldn't have been the same without Matt LeBlanc as Joey! Apparently casting director Ellie Kanner felt that way too. Although Vaughn was often known to portray characters who are a mix of loud, proud, funny, and sometimes intimidating, when Matt LeBlanc showed up to the audition after a night of drinking sporting a bruised nose, he immediately endeared himself to the creators and the other actors.

In an interview with "The Huffington Post " Kanner said although Vaughn came close to getting the part "he just didn't gel with the other actors the way LeBlanc did".

The photo illustrates various friends or pals.
2. Jamie Foxx couldn't show us the money

By his own admission, Foxx was so starstruck by Tom Cruise at the audition for the part of Rod Tidwell in "Jerry Maguire" (which went to Cuba Gooding Jr) that he became distracted. He said his lines too loudly and kept staring at Cruise in awe!

When Cruise chose to deliver his lines in a quiet and subdued manner with dramatic pauses Foxx thought he (Cruise) had lost his place and offered a helpful "We're right here" indicating the spot in the script but Cruise had said the line --it was just that Foxx couldn't hear him. In an Interview with Graham Norton Foxx admitted that he was embarrassed beyond belief, and very relieved when the audition was over.

Jerry Mouse was the adversary to Tom Cat in the "Tom and Jerry" cartoons.
3. Cynthia Nixon still managed to enjoy Cosmopolitans

The fact that there were four single women roles to cast makes it no surprise that Cynthia Nixon, Kirsten Davis, and Sarah Jessica Parker all auditioned for Carrie's part in the series "Sex and the City". In an interview with "The Hollywood Reporter" she (Nixon) said after being rejected for Carrie's role she persisted. The casting of the ladies turned out to be a "long and winding road."

The show's creator Darren Star shared some of the details in the book "Sex and the City and Us" by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong. Although it sounds bit cruel, Star's vision of Miranda not being "the pretty one" along with having a somewhat cynical, sometimes even bitter and angry persona, seemed the best fit for Nixon. She herself agreed, and was happy to grow out of the "sweet, waiflike, hippie characters" she usually portrayed so the casting was a win-win situation after all.

The photo clue illustrates NYC --the "city" in "Sex and the City".
4. Jennifer Lawrence didn't go down any rabbit holes

On Howard Stern's radio show Lawrence admitted that losing out on the part of Alice in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" was devastating for her! Burton's vision to cast a more mature Alice differed from the classic little girl in the story. Mia's interpretation of a strong empowered character won her the part. Lawrence did admit Mia Wasikowska was a much better fit for the part. "I couldn't have had a British accent," she conceded.

The photo shows a version of Alice and the Mad Hatter at the Tea Party.
5. Matthew McConaughey never had to sink or swim

Rumors were abound that McConaughey had indeed gotten the part of Jack Dawson in "Titanic" and turned it down. On an episode of "What What Happens Live" he stated the audition went very well, he thought he had "nailed it", and even read with Kate Winslet who had already gotten the part of Rose.

More importantly the studio wanted him because they thought McConaughey was a better choice for a romantic lead, but James Cameron disagreed. He wanted Leonardo DiCaprio and ultimately got his choice--after all he is the "King of the World"!

The clue shows the all important iceberg in "Titanic".
6. Kurt Russell just didn't have the force

In an "ABC News" interview Russell shared that he auditioned for both the roles of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. George Lucas originally wanted to cast fresh faces in the roles. He wanted the perfect blend of wit and roguish charm, but that proved difficult to cast with many actors auditioning but not fitting the bill.

He took his time trying to decide which role to give Russell--so much time, in fact, Russell ultimately accepted a role on a TV Western called "The Quest". "I gotta work so I took the Western", he said.

The clue depicts the light saber featured in the "Star Wars" films.
7. Meryl Streep wanted to go to great heights

Meryl Streep wasn't warmly received when she auditioned for Dino DeLaurentiis's 1976 version of "King Kong". Streep herself related the story on "The Graham Norton Show". The producer's son was very excited and enthusiastic when he introduced the fledgling actress to his father at the audition. DeLaurentiis (senior) promptly told his son --in Italian-- that Streep was too ugly for the part of Dwan. Imagine his surprise when she told him --also in Italian-- that she was sorry she was too ugly for King Kong!

Meryl's response shocked and embarrassed DeLaurentiis. He profusely apologized but the part still went to Jessica Lange.

The photo clue leads you to the Empire State Building famously featured in "King Kong".
8. Robert DeNiro never got an offer he couldn't refuse

Can you believe that Robert DeNiro was actually turned down for a role? DeNiro originally auditioned for the part of Santino "Sonny" Corleone in "The Godfather". Although Francis Ford Coppola was very impressed by DeNiro, he felt Caan better captured the "wildness" and "childlike wonder" he wanted portrayed in Sonny.

According to "Indie Wire" Coppola was looking ahead and DeNiro's caring, protective performance in the audition was a better fit for a young Vito Corleone. In any case "all's well that ends well" and DeNiro wound up with an iconic role and an Oscar!

The clue is meant to depict a stereotypical gangster or Mafia "godfather".
9. Britney Spears --Oops ...she didn't do it again

Surprisingly, Britney Spears didn't get the role of Allie in "The Notebook" because of a lack of talent. Her audition greatly impressed the director Nick Cassavetes and Ryan Gosling who had already gotten the part of Noah. Ultimately Cassavetes, had doubts about casting an actress with a high level of fame due to her singing career and Rachael McAdams was still relatively unknown.

In her memoir "The Woman in Me" Britney Spears wrote that she was actually relieved that the part of Allie went to Rachael McAdams. Spears admitted her difficulty separating herself from the character she played in "Crossroads" owing to challenges of method acting, and thought a potential repeat of that challenge might have been detrimental preferring to devote her energy to her music.

The clue of young woman writing or journaling leads us to "The Notebook".
10. Millie Bobby Brown had stranger things come along

When Millie Bobby Brown didn't get the part of Lyanna Mormont in "Game of Thrones" she took the rejection to heart. Appearing on "The Tonight Show" she told Jimmy Fallon that at the time of her audition she had had received far more "noes" than "yeses" which was hard for such a young girl. She began to think that "Hollywood was too hard" and thought of giving up on her acting dreams. The role of Lyanna Mormont went to Bella Ramsey and Millie is still thriving as Eleven in the series "Stranger Things"! Just goes to show better (Stranger) things come along!

And lastly, an illustration of the ominous throne in "Game of Thrones".
