Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who lost the first match at the very first "King of the Ring" quarter-finals match in 1993?

Answer: Razor Ramon

Razor Ramon was beaten by Bret Hart via pinfall in the first match of "King of the Ring" 1993, held in Dayton, Ohio on June 13, 1993. The tournament had started a month earlier, but the final rounds all took place at the Pay Per View. The first match of the night featured Bret Hart facing off against Razor Ramon. Hart would end up eliminating Mr. Perfect at the semi-finals and then beating Bam Bam Bigelow in the final to become the inaugural King of the Ring.
2. Which superstar assisted Owen Hart in his "King of the Ring" 1994 victory in the tournament's final match?

Answer: Jim Neidhart

The Hart family played a pivotal role in the WWF in the 1990s. In 1994, brothers Bret and Owen were in the middle of a heated feud. By beating Tatanka, The 1-2-3 Kid, and Razor Ramon, Owen Hart was crowned as the new King of the Ring, following the victory of his brother Bret the year before. Jim Neidhart, who had already interfered in another match in the "King of the Ring" 1994 Pay Per View earlier, attacked Ramon and allowed Owen to score the pin.
3. After Razor Ramon got injured and wasn't able to compete in the 1995 "King of the Ring" event, who won the qualifying match that allowed him to replace Ramon?

Answer: Savio Vega

Puerto Rican wrestler Juan Rivera started his WWF career as Kwang, and in 1995, he was introduced as Savio Vega, a supposed childhood friend of Razor Ramon. Vega debuted in May 1995. A month later, Vega competed against Irwin R. Schyster (I.R.S.) in a qualifying match to replace an injured Razor Ramon. Vega's victory at "Sunday Night Slam" allowed him to wrestle at the 1995 "King of the Ring" Pay Per View, where he would successfully beat Yokozuna and The Roadie.

In the final match, Savio lost against Mabel.
4. Out of the fifteen matches of the 1996 "King of the Ring" tournament, how many took place at the June 23 Pay Per View?

Answer: Three

While past editions of the "King of the Ring" tournament had been mostly held during the Pay Per View, the 1996 event was a little bit different. The first two rounds of the tournament (the first round and the quarterfinals) happened before the Pay Per View. On June 23, 1996 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jake Roberts beat Vader by disqualification, and Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated Mark Mero.

In the final, Stone Cold beat Jake Roberts and was crowned the new King of the Ring.
5. Which superstar, who would later call himself the "King of Kings", won the 1997 "King of the Ring" tournament?

Answer: Hunter Hearst Helmsley

Hunter Hearst Helmsley, who is better known as Triple H, made his WWF debut in 1995. That would be the beginning of a long and successful career, as Paul Levesque (his real name) consolidated himself as one of the greatest performers in the sports entertainment industry.

In the 1997 "King of the Ring" tournament, Triple H defeated Ahmed Johnson, Crush, and Mankind to become the winner. He would later call himself the "King of Kings", and one of his theme songs would later have that name too.
6. During the 1998 "King of the Ring" tournament, who did Dan Severn injure, making him wear protective chest gear?

Answer: D'Lo Brown

Dan Severn, who fought in UFC before joining WWF, performed a submission maneuver on D'Lo Brown during their "King of the Ring" qualifying match. Brown surrendered and began yelling uncontrollably. In fact, those looking closely could see Brown making the infamous "X sign", which tells officials that the wrestler is legitimately hurt.

It would later be revealed that Brown had torn his pectoral muscle. In the following days, he would wear protective gear on his chest, which would become part of his gimmick.
7. Which fellow D-Generation X superstar did Billy Gunn beat at the 1999 "King of the Ring" finals?

Answer: X-Pac

The 1999 "King of the Ring" was somewhat unusual in that it had a woman, Chyna, compete against male wrestlers. Incredibly, she was able to quickly defeat Val Venis in the first round, but then lost to Road Dogg. In the semi-finals, Road Dogg lost to X-Pac and Billy Gunn defeated Kane, setting up a final between D-Generation X members X-Pac and Billy Gunn.

In a match that lasted just over five minutes, Gunn pinned X-Pac to become the 1999 King of the Ring.
8. Which superstar did NOT compete in the 2000 "King of the Ring" tournament, yet left the Pay Per View as WWF Champion?

Answer: The Rock

The 2000 "King of the Ring" tournament was longer than its predecessors, since it featured a Round of 32 before the final rounds. Kurt Angle won the final by beating Rikishi. The Pay Per View's main event was a Six-man Tag Team Match with the WWF Championship on the line.

The Rock, joined by Kane and The Undertaker, beat Triple H, Vince McMahon, and Shane McMahon. Since The Rock made the pin, he was awarded the WWF Championship.
9. Who did Edge beat in the semi-finals of the 2001 "King of the Ring" tournament, allowing the "Rated-R Superstar" to fight Kurt Angle in the final?

Answer: Rhyno

East Rutherford, New Jersey hosted the 2001 "King of the Ring" Pay Per View on June 24, 2001. Only the semi-finals and the final matches of the tournament took place at the Pay Per View: Kurt Angle beat Christian and Edge beat Rhyno, both through pinfalls. Rhyno had previously defeated Tazz and Tajiri, but was unable to make it any further.

In the end, Edge won the tournament by pinning Kurt Angle.
10. Why was the 2002 "King of the Ring" tournament unique?

Answer: Only one to feature both "Raw" and "Smackdown" superstars

Though the "King of the Ring" tournament returned in 2006 (Booker T won that one and changed his name to King Booker), the 2002 edition was the last one in a while. It was also the last "King of the Ring" Pay Per View, although WWE revived it in 2015 in an event that streamed on the WWE Network. Because "Smackdown" was introduced in early 2002, this event was also the first and only one to feature wrestlers from both brands. Most of the matches were between superstars of the same brand; the semi-finals saw "Raw" wrestlers Brock Lesnar and Rob Van Dam beat "Smackdown's" Test and Chris Jericho, respectively. Lesnar beat Van Dam in the final.
