Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the introduction to "Swept Away", where is Arthur?

Answer: In a clock tower

Arthur explains that different people have different ways of perceiving time. For D.W., time passes very slowly. To her, a minute seems like an hour. Buster's perception of time is linked to his stomach. For him, the only time that matters is whether or not it is time to eat.

At the clock tower, Arthur explains that time seems to go fast when you are having fun (for example: if you are at an amusement park) but it seems to go slow if you are doing something you hate (like taking a test). He concludes the introduction by saying that there is one thing that is certain about time: you cannot stop it.

At the end of the introduction, he tries to stop time by trying to stop movement the hands of the clock on the clock tower, but that does not work.
2. In "Germophobia", who develops germophobia?

Answer: Buster

Buster has a reputation for being a slob. He hides in trash cans when the kids play Hide and Seek at recess. He does not take baths. He does not wash his hands after using the restroom. He eats food from off of the floor. He plays a harmonica that he picked out of the trash can and then he throws it in the pudding in the cafeteria. He does not cover his mouth when he sneezes or coughs. This drives his friends crazy.

Buster's friends have a meeting at the Sugar Bowl. The girls tell Arthur to talk to Buster about his hygiene. They ask him to be the one to do this because he is Buster's best friend, so Buster is more likely to listen to him than to anyone else. The girls also threaten not to come to Buster's pool party if he does not improve his hygiene. Arthur talks to Buster about his hygiene, but Buster does not care.

Brain comes up with an idea to show Buster what germs look like, Brain invites Buster to his house and shows him some germs under a microscope. Brain explains that germs are more common in people with bad hygiene. Brain also explains that germs cause diseases. At first, Buster does not seem to care. That night, Buster has a nightmare about germs. When he wakes up, he turns over a new leaf.

Buster imagines that he sees germs everywhere. This terrifies him. He does as much about it as he can. He takes a thorough bath. He washes his harmonica until it is clean as a whistle. He wears hockey gloves to school. He frequently washes his hands now. He cleans his chair at school with a spray and cloth. He asks Mr. Ratburn how many germs are in the school (Mr. Ratburn does not know). He wraps his sandwich in a lot of plastic. At this point, all of his friends realize that he is going overboard in being careful about germs.

At the pool party, Buster wears a mask and he makes everybody shower before getting in the pool. The girls decide to talk to Buster about how much of a germophobe he is being. Buster runs away from them and accidentally jumps into the pool. When he gets out, he falls into the dirt. After he falls into the dirt, he realizes that he is okay. At this point, his germophobia is cured. Then, Francine tells Buster that he was being crazy. This offends Buster. The next day at lunch, Buster's friends apologize to Buster for offending him and they buy him a new harmonica to make up for it. He accepts their apology and plays the new harmonica at the end of the episode.
3. In "Arthur Sells Out", after Arthur cons James, how does he make it up to him?

Answer: He buys a new toy for James

Arthur wants a new video game, but he does not have enough money. Buster finds some old toys in Arthur's garage and he encourages Arthur to sell them. Arthur posts an ad for the toys online. At first, they do not sell. So, Arthur gets Muffy to help him. With Muffy's help, Arthur sells most of the toys. When some toys do not sell, he resorts to misleading advertising. He sells a fragile toy by saying that it's "For Display Purposes" and not mentioning that it easily breaks. Shortly after James buys it, it breaks.

Buster tells Arthur to give James a refund. Muffy tells Arthur that he does not have to. For a little while, Arthur is conflicted about what to do. In the end, Arthur has enough money for the video game, but instead he buys a new toy for James and apologizes to him. After all of this, Muffy buys the video game and invites Arthur and Buster to play it with her. All three of them are extremely disappointed in the game. Arthur refuses to help Muffy sell it, so she puts it in the trash.
4. In "Mind Your Manners", who teachers table manners to the Tibble twins?

Answer: Molly

When D.W. and Emily ask the Tibbles what they did for their grandmother on Grandparents Day, they admit that they had no idea there was such a day. They feel guilty about missing it and want to make it up to her. They next morning, they offer her breakfast in bed and tell her they want to go to a restaurant. She refuses to take them to one because the last time she did, they got in a food fight and they were told to leave. At school, they tell this to D.W. She explains to them that they need to learn table manners before they can eat in a restaurant. They ask James for help. He then asks his older sister, Molly, to help keep them in line.

Molly takes them all to the Sugar Bowl. The twins shout at the top of their lungs and disturb the other patrons, so Molly takes them out. She explains that other patrons do not like to hear people shouting in the restaurant and the twins need to think about what other people want. She teaches them three key words: stop, look, and listen. For the next few days, the twins practice these things. One day, they decide that they are ready to go to a restaurant. Despite their grandmother's reluctance, they convince her to take them. Timmy intentionally spills some juice and it looks like the twins will get in a fight, but then Tommy cleans up the spill and Timmy apologizes to his grandmother. A few days later, their grandmother takes them to a different restaurant where people eat with their hands. She explains that she did this to reward their improvement in behavior and she thought they might want to go somewhere where they can relax and need fewer tables manners.
5. In "Buenas Noches, Vicita", what helps Vicita fall asleep?

Answer: Her favorite book

Every night, Vicita's father reads to Vicita a book called "The Very Magic Mango Tree" before she falls asleep. One night, the book disappears. When no one can find it, she has trouble falling asleep. The next few nights, her father reads some classic American fairy tales for her. She finds flaws in all of them that most people do not find (she knows that bears do not eat porridge or sleep in beds, she think Jack should have built an escalator instead of climbing the beanstalk, etc.), so they do not help her sleep.

Arthur's friends try various methods to help her sleep, but none of them work. One day, D.W. discovers that Vicita knows her favorite book by heart. D.W. asks Arthur to get some pen and paper and write down every word that she says. Now, Vicita has a book that is not exactly the same book as the one she loves, but it has all the same words. This helps Vicita sleep. In her dream, she helps the main boy in the book. When she wakes up, her father looks under her pillow and finds the original version of the book. Vicita is happy to have it back, but she says she no longer needs it.
6. In "Prunella Packs it in", what activity is Prunella good at?

Answer: Designing sets for plays

When Prunella learns that Rubella is studying for the college exam, Prunella starts worrying about her own future. She goes to the ice cream shop, where Brain tells her that the college exam is one thing that helps decide whether colleges will accept you. He also points out the importance of good grades. Prunella then goes to the library to get a lot of text books. There, Muffy tells her that colleges look for people who are well-rounded: good at a lot of things. Prunella then goes to the cultural center and signs up for several activities there. She does not enjoy any of them or learn much.

At school, Mr. Ratburn asks Prunella to design a set for the school play because she did such a great job last year. Prunella eventually agrees to quit every one of her activities at the cultural center and she agrees to design the set. She does a great job again, but then says that she is sad that this will not help her get into college. Mr. Ratburn tells her that it will. When Prunella excitedly tells Muffy what Mr. Ratburn told her, Muffy asks her father to tell Prunella that Mr. Ratburn is wrong and that designing sets will not get her into college. To Muffy's astonishment, her father never went to college. She had seen her father's college degree, but it was just an honorary degree that he got after donating the library. Prunella gets her revenge against Muffy by teasing her at the end of the episode.
7. In "Phony Fern", when Fern gets a new phone, who becomes her best friend?

Answer: Muffy

Fern's parents get her a new cell phone and they tell her only to use it in emergencies. Muffy sees that it's the same brand as her phone. Muffy and Fern end up communicating on their cell phones almost constantly. When Fern's phone's battery almost runs out, she runs as fast as she can, hoping to get home to recharge it.

In her hurry, she does not look where she's going. She trips on a stick and drops her phone in the road, where it gets smashed to pieces. Fern's parents are disappointed in her.

They get her a new phone that is much cheaper and much smaller. When Muffy sees Fern's primitive new phone, Muffy decides that she is never going to call Fern again.
8. In "Brain's Dark Secret", what is Brain's dark secret?

Answer: He repeated kindergarten

When the kindergarten teacher retires, Mr. Haney decides to hang up photos of all the classes that she taught. Brain's friends see the photos and they notice that he is in two kindergarten classes. They are shocked to learn that the smartest kid in school repeated kindergarten. Brain tells them that many geniuses get held back such as Einstein and Edison. Binky ends up sticking for for Brain because he also got held back. Another reason that Binky defends Brain is because Brain said that geniuses get held back, which caused Binky to think that he is a genius.

The next few days, Brain tries to teach Binky chess, science, math, and brain teasers. Binky does not do well at any of these things. To make matters worse, Binky stops studying for tests. Binky actually wants to get held back again because he thinks that will prove that he is the smartest person in history. This thought horrifies Brain.

Brain ends up telling all of his friends that when he was in kindergarten, he cried a lot. He was held back because he wasn't emotionally ready for first grade. His friends are okay with that. When Binky learns this, he realizes that being held back does not necessarily mean that you are a genius. Binky then realizes that he is not a genius. However, because Binky had been standing up for him and letting him know that being held back isn't the worst thing ever, Brain decides to help Binky study for the next test. Brain wants Binky to come to 4th grade with him.

Brain's real name was never a secret. Everybody calls him Brain, but they all know that his real name is Alan.
9. In "Baby Kate and the Imaginary Mystery", where is Nadine?

Answer: Fairy Land

Treenie (Vicita's imaginary friend) tells Kate and Pal that Nadine has been missing for three days. Pal goes on a quest to find her. He thinks the Tibbles have kidnapped her, so he stows away in Tommy's backpack. Stanley tells Pal that Nadine is not there. Pal returns home, feeling sad to be empty-handed.

Then, Nadine appears. She tells Kate and Pal that she was on vacation. She went to Fairy Land and she brought back photos for them. It seems that D.W. rarely calls for her anymore, so Nadine fears that D.W. might be too old for her. Kate tells her that when D.W. gets too old for Nadine, she can be Kate's imaginary friend.
10. In "The Making of Arthur", who holds a video-making competition for kids?

Answer: Matt Damon

For Damon's competition, kids are asked to send in a one-minute video. Muffy makes a video about vampires playing baseball. She thinks she is guaranteed to win the competition because her father sold a car to Damon's lawyer's assistant, but she is wrong. Brain makes a video about the sneeze, explaining all the details of sneezing, with George as his star. George leaves Brain's project to do his own video, in which he makes a doll house for Vicita's stuffed animal. Arthur makes a cooking video showing his father making a souffle, but he accidentally deletes it when he tries to save it. Instead, he ends up joining Buster's video, which is about Arthur.

George wins the competition, but Damon loves the Buster/Arthur video so much that he decides to turn it into TV show. The episode ends with Damon asking Arthur for a shot of him and his dog walking in front of their house, and at the end of the episode, we see the beginning of the introduction to every "Arthur". This episode is a paradox in that it's an "Arthur" episode about how "Arthur" episodes began. It's fictionalized, because this is definitely not how "Arthur" was actually made.

PBS flagged this episode as "Do Not Air" in 2020, although I have no idea why. They removed the flag and resumed airing this episode in 2022.
11. In "Dancing Fools", who are the best dancers in Mrs. Molina's class?

Answer: Francine and George

Muffy signs Francine up for dance lessons against Francine's will because Francine owed her a favor (Muffy had lent money to Francine a month before this and Francine hadn't paid her back) and because Muffy wanted to learn how to dance but she was afraid to join the class without her best friend. Francine is not happy about this, but she joins the class on the condition that Muffy buy hockey tickets for Francine in whatever seats Francine chooses. Muffy does this, but then writes this down as another favor she did for Francine. The teacher is Mrs. Molina (the mother that lives next door to Arthur). She pairs up each boy with a girl. She pairs Francine with George.

Francine tells George that she does not want to be there. George says that he does not want to be there either (he is only there because his mother is Mrs. Molina's best friend). On the first day, they are the only kids who do well. The next day at lunch, Muffy spreads the word about how well Francine and George did at dance class. At recess, Binky asks George to teach him what he has learned. George tells Binky that he can just take the class. Binky appears at the next dance class. He tells the other kids that his mother signed him up as a punishment, but no one believes him.

At the beginning of the second class, Binky and Muffy convince Francine and George to change partners so that Binky is paired with Francine and Muffy is paired with George. Muffy fails to learn anything because she is too arrogant to listen to Mrs. Molina or George. Binky is a great individual dancer, but he is not a good team player. Francine tells him that they are supposed to dance together, but he just tells her to keep up with him, which she cannot do. Mrs. Molina agrees with Francine and she puts Francine back with George. Muffy is glad to let George go to Francine because Muffy thinks that George is terrible now. George and Francine are happy to be back together. After they are reunited, they are by far the best dancers in the class.

Mrs. Molina asks Francine and George if they'd like to go into a competition. They simultaneously say, "We'll do it." Muffy overhears this conversation and then she tells Binky about this. They both get jealous. Muffy decides to sabotage Francine. Muffy buys Francine the hockey tickets that she wanted, and they are on the night of the dance competition. Binky decides to sabotage George by intimidating him in a dark alley, and that does not work. Francine goes to George's house to tell him that she will go to the hockey game and not the dance competition. George talks Francine out of this idea, and she chooses to do the dance competition and turn down the hockey tickets.

At the dance competition, before Francine and George start dancing, Binky and Muffy are in the audience and they are both angry that Francine and George are doing this. As soon as Francine and George start dancing, Binky and Muffy have a change of heart. Binky and Muffy see how good Francine and George are, and they become their biggest fans. Francine and George do not win, but they are happy to finish in second place and to have Binky and Muffy on their side.

George says that it's the first time he ever won anything, which is an odd thing to say because he usually wins the competitions. One such example is the first half of this episode, which is "The Making of Arthur", which is a competition that George wins. I guess we are meant to assume that "Dancing Fools" takes place before "The Making of Arthur" despite the order in which the segments are shown. "Dancing Fools" must also take place before the talent show in season four in "To Beat or Not to Beat" and the one in season three in "Buster's Growing Grudge" because George wins those competitions too.

PBS flagged this episode as "Do not air" in 2020. I have no idea why, but I have noticed that the episodes that get flagged or banned are some of my favorites. PBS removed the flag and resumed airing this episode in 2022.
12. In "Mr. Alwaysright", who is jealous of Brain?

Answer: Buster

Brain tries to help Buster pick out a hat for Ms. Baxter's birthday, but Buster does not take Brain's advice. She refuses to wear the hat that Buster bought. Buster gets jealous of Brain because he thinks Brain is always right and Buster is always wrong (apparently, Buster forgot about the time that he defeated Brain in a math competition in "It's a No-Brainer"). Buster spends the next few days asking Brain some difficult questions hoping Brain gets one wrong. Brain gets them all right and he gets tired of Buster bothering him.

Eventually, Buster confesses to Brain that he is just upset because Ms. Baxter did not like the hat. Brain goes to the store to help him return it. At the store, they see a box of hats that all have holes in them. The first time the boys went to the store, they saw one hat like that. Buster said that something was supposed to go into the hole but it fell out, but Brain said it was a moth hole. During their second trip to the store, the store's owner shows the boys what is supposed to go into those holes: They were all supposed to have jeweled beetles, but they kept falling out. It turns out that Buster was right about that and Brain was wrong, and Buster feels better. Brain is usually right (they don't call him "Brain" for nothing), but even he is not perfect.
13. In "Francine's Pilfered Paper", does Francine get suspended?

Answer: No

Francine finds an article online that has all the information she needs for her homework. She copies it, pastes it, saves it, prints it, puts her name on it, and turns it in. The next day, Francine happily tells Catherine what she did. Catherine explains that what Francine did is called "Plagiarism" and she could get an "F" and get suspended or expelled for it. Catherine tells Francine to tell Mr. Ratburn the truth.

Francine hurries to Mr. Ratburn's house. He quickly grades it and gives her an A-, making no attempt to do his own research to find out where Francine got that information. Francine goes home but then her guilt causes her to have a nightmare. The Monday after Thanksgiving, Francine confesses what she did. She also shows Mr. Ratburn that she wrote another paper: an original one. Mr. Ratburn accepts Francine's apology and does not punish her. Francine's new paper gets a B. Francine is thrilled that she earned that B fair and square.
14. In "Buster Gets Real", when Buster stops watching "Bionic Bunny", what show does he start watching?

Answer: Top Supermarket Clerk

Buster had been a fan of "Bionic Bunny" for as long as Arthur had known him. In "Buster Gets Real", Buster decides that he no longer likes "Bionic Bunny", which stuns Arthur. Buster says that "Bionic Bunny" is not real, so he watches a reality show called "Top Supermarket Clerk". This drives Arthur crazy because D.W. loves that show and he doesn't.

Arthur makes it his mission to convince Buster to stop watching "Top Supermarket Clerk" and start watching "Bionic Bunny" again. When that fails, Arthur tries to watch "Top Supermarket Clerk" with D.W. and Buster. Arthur falls asleep in the middle of the episode. After Arthur wakes up, Buster tells him that they do not have to enjoy all the same things to be best friends. They talk about the things they still have in common and they decide to remain best friends.
15. In "Big Brother Binky", who is Binky's adopted sister?

Answer: Mei Lin

Binky's parents adopt a baby from China. At first, Binky is excited about the idea of being an older brother. Then, he becomes fearful that his parents will love her more than they love him. When they meet her, Binky is initially able to instantly stop her from crying just by making a funny face.

After a while, that stops working. Then, Arthur is the only one who can stop Mei Lin from crying (because he's had experience stopping young baby girls from crying with his sisters D.W. and Kate). At the end of the episode, the Barnes family and the Read family have dinner together at the Golden Panda.

The parents sit at one table and the kids sit at the other table. This is when it's revealed that Mei Lin and Kate can talk to each other but they cannot talk to anyone else.
