Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Arthur Writes a Story," he writes the story of what previous episode?

Answer: Arthur's Pet Business

Mr. Ratburn assigns the class to write a story, which can be real or fictional. Arthur decides to write the story of how he got Pal. The story itself was told in "Arthur's Pet Business". "Arthur Writes a Story" tells us about how he wrote the story. His goal was to write a story that everyone would like.

D.W. tells Arthur that the story of "Arthur's Pet Business" is boring. Arthur decides that if he amended the story so that Perky and Pal were elephants, that would be more interesting. He tells this story to Buster, who tells him that the story would be better if it were a science fiction story. Arthur amends the story so that it takes place on the moon and Perky and Pal (who are elephants in this version of the story) float up to the ceiling. He then tells this version of the story to Brain, who deems the story "scientifically inaccurate" because, while an elephant would weigh less on the moon than on earth, an elephant would not float to the ceiling. Brain says that Arthur needs to do some research so that his story can be based on facts and not imagination. Arthur goes to the library to do some research. While there, he sees Francine and tells her his latest version of the story. She says that he is using words that nobody knows, which means nobody will understand his story. He changes it even more and presents his latest story to Binky, who says that it needs to be a love story. Arthur tries to write a love story, but he hates it so much that he rips up his paper. Prunella tells Arthur that last year (she is a 4th grader who was in Mr. Ratburn's class last year) she presented her story as a country music song and she got an A+. Arthur then turns his story into a song about how he got his elephant on planet "Schmellafin." He presents the song to his grandmother. She says loves it, but she also calls it "confusing." She tells him not to worry about what she thinks, but he doesn't take her advice. He then watches "Bionic Bunny" and decides to turn Pal into a superhero. He then presents this version of the story to the class.

The class does not seem to know how to react. Binky asks if it is a true story. Arthur says "sort of" and says that it started as the story of how he got his dog, but he was afraid that story would be boring. Mr. Ratburn says that he wants to hear that story and he advises Arthur not to worry abut what other people think of his story and just tell it the way he wants to. Arthur then tells the class the story that he originally wanted to tell, which is the story that was previously told in "Arthur's Pet Business." Everybody loves the story. Mr. Ratburn puts a sticker on Arthur's shirt and tells him that he needs to write that story down and hand it in the next day, which Arthur agrees to do. Binky asks Arthur if this story was a true story, and Arthur happily says "Yeah!" The episode concludes by showing us a book called "My Very Own Story" with him on the cover.

"Arthur's New Puppy" is the wrong answer because that's about what Pal was like shortly after Arthur got him. It is not the story of how Arthur got him. That episode takes place after the conclusion of the story that Arthur decided to write.
2. In "Arthur's Lost Dog," does anyone besides Pal ever find out why Kate was crying?

Answer: No

The Read family goes to a street fair. Pickles the clown walks by with some balloons. Kate tries to reach for a balloon while fastened in her stroller, but he walks away and she does not get one. She then cries. Dave, Jane, Arthur, D.W., and Buster try various things to stop the crying, but nothing works. Pal is the only one who noticed what Kate was doing right before she started crying, so he is the only one who figures it out. Dave and Jane think that Kate wants Arthur to push her, so they tell him to let D.W. hold Pal's leash while he pushes her. Arthur reluctantly gives into his parents. Pal then runs around a pole, gets out of his leash, and runs off. Arthur thinks D.W. took the leash off and D.W. thinks that Pal wanted to escape from Arthur.

Arthur and Buster than search for Pal while David and Jane continue to try to stop Kate's crying. They eventually find Pal, but he runs off to Pickles. Arthur concludes that Pal ran away from him and wonders what he had been doing wrong. Pal finds Pickles. Pickles is allergic to dogs, so he tries to get Pal away from him. Pickles accidentally lets go of his balloons and they fly up. Pal jumps on Pickles' head and jumps up to get the balloon strings in his mouth. Pal then starts floating around the town with balloons in his mouth. Most of them fly out of his mouth, but he saves one. He falls down, but Francine catches him. He then runs home.

Arthur decides not to make any "Lost dog" signs because if Pal does not want to come home, Arthur wants Pal to be happy. Pal comes home with a balloon, then runs to Kate's crib and gives it to her. Kate stops crying. Jane says "Arthur, your dog almost jumped on the baby. Take him out." That is the wrong way to react when your baby stops crying and your lost dog comes home. David asks Jane how she got Kate to stop crying. Jane says "I don't know. I guess we will never know what was bothering Kate." The episode ends with Pal frowning after hearing Jane say that. I don't blame him.
3. In "So Long, Spanky" D.W. loses what kind of pet?

Answer: Bird

Spanky is introduced before the title card. Arthur has mixed feelings about him. Spanky bit Arthur's finger and ate Arthur's shoelace and he obviously did not enjoy those things. However, he feels bad for Spanky because D.W. takes very bad care of him (she dresses him up, she feed him tea which is bad for birds, etc.). He says that he likes Spanky as long as his beak is closed. After the title card, Spanky is sick. When D.W. leaves the room to make some more tea for him, he dies.

She takes him to her father, asking him why he will not wake up. Her father tells her that Spanky is dead. D.W. does not understand the meaning of the word "dead" and spends much of the episode asking her father if Spanky will ever wake up. They have a funeral for Spanky in the back yard where everyone says that they miss him, even Arthur. David tells D.W. to remember all the good times she had with Spanky, and remembering them will help her feel better. Throughout the episode, a toad follows D.W. around. D.W. hates the toad at first, but the episode ends with the toad becoming her new pet.
4. In "Buster's New Friend," who is Buster's new friend?

Answer: Mike

Arthur and Buster are supposed to work on a magnet project together. When Buster does not show up, Arthur calls Buster's mother at work. She tells him that Buster is mini-golfing with his new friend Mike. The next day, Buster tells Arthur how great Mike is. Throughout most of the episode, Buster continues to not show up for things he agreed to do with Arthur and his friends without even calling them and letting them know what's going on. When Buster sees them at school, he continues to brag about Mike. Arthur ends his friendship with Buster and decides that he will finish the magnet project by himself.

When Arthur goes to Buster's house to return everything that he borrowed from him, he runs into Buster on the way there. Buster apologizes to Arthur and tells him that Arthur is still his best friend. Arthur eventually calms down a little bit and they watch Bionic Bunny at Buster's house. There, Buster says that Mike has a car. This enrages Arthur because kids cannot drive cars. When Mike shows up, Arthur sees that Mike is an adult. He is Buster's big brother as part of the "Big brother/big sister" club at the community center. Buster's mother signed him up because she thinks that he needs older male influences (Buster's father is not in town because his parents are divorced). They return to Arthur's house and the episode ends with Arthur asking Mike what he knows about magnets.
5. In "Arthur the Wrecker," did Arthur wreck his mother's computer?

Answer: No

When Arthur and Buster play a computer game together, they fight over the mouse, accidentally knock the keyboard over, and the monitor turns off. They think the computer is wrecked and they are too afraid of being punished to tell her what happened. They try various things to fix it, but they cannot fix it.

At the end of the episode, as she's about to use it, Arthur reluctantly tells her that he wrecked the computer. She discovers that it is not wrecked and all that she needs to do is flip a switch in the back.

However, she is disappointed that he did not tell her about the computer sooner and she forbids him from using it for a week.
6. In "Arthur and the True Francine," why does Francine briefly end her friendship with Muffy?

Answer: Muffy cheats off of Francine's test and Francine gets blamed

The episode begins with the girls playing Truth or Dare. Muffy says "Truth" and Fern asks Muffy if she ever lied. Muffy is extremely offended that Fern would think that she might lie, but then Francine tells the story of when Muffy was a new student in second grade and Muffy told a very serious lie. This silences Muffy and then we see the title card.

Muffy and Francine became best friends when they discovered that they have the same middle name (Alice). They hang out a lot at Muffy's house. Francine studies for the test and tries to encourage Muffy to study with her, but Muffy refuses to do so, claiming to be an expert on math (even though she doesn't even know the word "subtraction").

When the test happens, Francine has an easy time with it. When the tests are handed back the next day, Mr. Marco speaks to Francine and Muffy privately and tells them that their tests are exactly the same. Francine gasps, but Muffy quickly denies cheating. When Mr. Marco asks Francine if she can explain why the tests are the same, Francine says "no." Apparently, Mr. Marco isn't very smart. He believes Muffy (apparently all Muffy had to do way say she didn't do it and he'd believe her) and fails to figure out that Francine's "no" was because she didn't notice Muffy had been cheating off of her and not because Francine was guilty. He concludes Francine is the cheater and gives her a week of detention.

After school, Muffy offers Francine a ride in her family's limo. Muffy explains that the Crosswires have a reputation of honesty and she has to withhold it, so she cannot allow people to know that she's a cheater. For this reason, Muffy explains that Francine must take the blame every time Muffy cheats. Francine refuses the ride and returns the friendship bracelet that Muffy had given her. Later, Muffy leaves some muffins and a balloon at Francine's door, but Francine pops the balloon and throws out the muffins.

Francine cannot play in the baseball game against Mighty Mountain because she has detention. Muffy tells the other kids that she is an amazing baseball player. They allow her on the team, but they quickly discover that she does not even know how to play baseball. Muffy then goes to Mr. Marco and confesses that she is the one who cheated. Francine is set free and Muffy is given a two-week detention, which she says is "totally unfair" (Seriously Muffy? You cheated and you made your friend take the blame. It's totally fair). Francine is allowed to play in the game. Mighty Mountain still wins by a lot, but Francine scores two runs. Francine allows Muffy to be her friend again, as long as she doesn't cheat again.
7. In "Grandpa Dave's Old Country Farm," Arthur and D.W. help their grandfather do what?

Answer: Fix the hen house

The parents send Arthur and D.W. to Grandpa Dave for a week during their summer vacation. It's their favorite place to go for vacation because they have always had some good times with him. When they arrive at the farm, they see that the buildings are falling apart. To make matters worse, there are chickens in D.W.'s room. It turns out that the roof in the hen house fell down and Grandpa Dave moved the chickens in the house in a rarely-used bedroom (that was D.W.'s room for the week) until it was fixed. However, he is getting older and it is getting harder for him to fix things on the farm. Additionally, he constantly refuses help from anyone.

Arthur and D.W. volunteer to help him fix the farm because D.W. wants her own room. Initially, he refuses, saying that the farm has been in his family for 150 years. D.W. says "Grandpa, we ARE your family." That convinces him to let the kids help him fix the farm. He also accepts help from a friend in town. It takes them two days, but they complete the hen house on the final day that Arthur and D.W. are there.
8. In "D.W. Flips," she begins taking classes for what?

Answer: Gymnastics

She watches the Olympics on TV and is blown away by a gymnast. She realizes that's what she wants to be, so she asks her mother to sign her up for gymnastics lessons. Her mother is reluctant to do so because she's signed D.W. up for things that she said she wanted in the past (tee-ball, ballet, violin) but D.W. refused to practice and always made flimsy excuses for her failures in those things. Her mother does not think this would be different, but D.W. convinces her just by jumping. So, her mother signs her up.

The class does not go well for D.W. She cannot do a somersault or a cartwheel. She is the only kid in the class who cannot stand on her hands (and she makes everyone else fall over in the process). She is constantly jealous of Emily, who can do all of these things very well. Emily tries to help her, but she just gets angry and jealous.

D.W. practices her cartwheels at home and in the supermarket. She knocks over a lot of things in the process. The next day at gymnastics, she does a successful cartwheel. She feels good at first, but then she seems Emily doing cartwheels from one end of the gym to the other. Most of the students are impressed by this, but the teacher tells Emily that showing off is impolite and D.W. gets upset.

D.W. decides to one-up Emily by doing a cartwheel on the balance beam while the teacher is out of the room. Emily tries to dissuade her, but she doesn't listen. When D.W. is on the balance beam, she loses her balance. Emily runs to tell the teacher and D.W.'s mom shows up. D.W.'s mom catches her when she falls, but the mom is very angry. In the end, Emily and D.W. become friends and D.W. promises her mother that she will be more careful next time.
9. In "Meek For a Week," who makes a bet with Muffy about being nice for a week?

Answer: Francine

When the kids play hockey, Francine does all the work. She doesn't pass it to anyone and she even takes the ball away from her own teammates. This makes them angry with her. Muffy is the angriest one. When the ball gets passed to Muffy, Arthur tells her to shoot but Francine tells her to pass it to her. Muffy is unable to decide who to listen to, so the other team takes the ball and scores the game-winning goal. Francine blames Arthur for the loss because he told Muffy to shoot, and Francine calls Muffy the worst player on the team. Muffy gets upset and starts to walk away.

Francine catches up to Muffy and asks her what's wrong. Muffy says that she'd play better if Francine would let her play. Francine says that she is the nicest person in school. Muffy pulls out an expensive watch that Francine has coveted. Muffy makes a bet that Francine can have the watch if she is nice for a week. Francine accepts the bet. Muffy adds that Francine is not allowed to tell anyone why she is being nice.

During the next week, Francine stays true to her bet, albeit Muffy has to remind her of it from time to time. When Arthur wears a different sweater than his usual yellow one, Francine is the only kid who says that it looks nice and does not laugh at him. When they play baseball and it's Buster's turn to bat, Francine walks up and decides to hit for him, but then she changes her mind and asks if he is okay. When Francine and Muffy practice hockey, Muffy inadvertently falls on Francine. Francine starts to scold Muffy, but then she changes her mind and compliments her.

The other kids notice that Francine is acting unusually nice. This scares them. Brain explains that this behavior is bad for her. He shakes a soda bottle until the cap pops off to demonstrate what will happen to her if she continues to hold her anger in. The kids then fantasize that Francine's head is going to pop off if she keeps being nice. They decide to deliberately antagonize her to get her back to her usual self.

Arthur and Buster deliberately miss catching a baseball. After the game, Arthur buys a cherry soda for Francine even though she hates cherry. Arthur and Buster tell her that Binky said that he could beat her at any sport. All of this makes her angry, but she refuses to show it. Instead, she continues to hold in more anger and to make nice comments.

The day before the bet is over, Arthur and Buster ask Muffy if anything is wrong with Francine. Muffy says that Francine will be back to her usual rude self the next day at that time. Arthur says that's right after the playoff hockey game. Muffy feels concerned when she realizes she had not factored that game into the bet.

During the game, Francine deliberately allows players on the other team to score goals. Muffy decides to forfeit the final 37 minutes of the bet and she declares Francine the winner and gives her the watch. Francine refuses because she wants to make it through the final 37 minutes. Binky accidently runs into her and and falls on top of the watch and breaks it. This is the final straw and Francine decides to no longer be nice. She channels her rage into the game, but she allows her teammates to score. Francine's team wins the game. She didn't get the watch, but she learned a valuable lesson.
10. In "Arthur's Chicken Pox," Arthur wasn't able to go to the circus because he had chicken pox.

Answer: False

"Arthur's Chicken Pox" begins with D.W. banging pans together and repeating "The circus is coming!" making Kate cry, disrupting her mother's phone conversation, banging the pans right in Arthur's ear, and getting no punishment for any of it. Arthur says that he loves the circus, but it's not until Saturday and he feels sick.

After the title card, we see the art class. When Arthur hallucinates and passes out in art class, he is taken to the school nurse. When he gets home, he watches TV and eats from the couch. D.W. tries to convince her parents that he is faking it, but they don't listen to her (probably because they know he had to go to the school nurse, which wouldn't happen if he was faking it). That night, Arthur has a nightmare. When he wakes up, he goes to the bathroom, looks in the mirror, and runs out screaming when he sees the red spots on his face. This wakes up his family, who go to his bedroom and they see it. His father says that it's chicken pox. He tells him that it's a normal childhood sickness and that both of his parents had it. His mother says that she is going to ask if Grandma Thora can come and she says that Arthur might not be able to go to the circus because chicken pox is contagious. D.W. tells Arthur that she will take good care of him.

The next morning starts with D.W. "taking care of Arthur" by tormenting him. Grandma Thora comes in, tells D.W. to stop, and then Thora takes care of him. Grandma Thora gives Arthur an oatmeal bath. Arthur loves it, but D.W. continues to bother him. Grandma Thora tells Arthur not to scratch himself because it'll give him an infection. After this D.W. uses binoculars to watch Arthur from afar to see if he scratches. She catches him scratching, but Thora doesn't listen to her.

D.W. sees Grandma Thora taking a tray with Arthur's lunch to him. D.W. notices that his drink has a "crazy straw." D.W. asks her grandmother when she can drink with the crazy straw. Thora tells D.W. that she does not get to drink with it because it's covered with germs. Later on, Grandma Thora tells Arthur the story of the day he was born. D.W. later asks about when she was born, but Thora tells her nothing.

D.W. gets tired of the special treatment that Arthur is getting, so she paints red spots on her face to make it look like she has chicken pox so she will get that treatment. At first, it works. Grandma Thora is fooled and she gives D.W. an oatmeal bath. Thora then comes by with some juice with the crazy straw, but then she sees that D.W.'s spots are gone (the paint was washed off in the bath). D.W. says "I got better" but Thora is no longer fooled. Thora says "Dora Winifred, I am very disappointed in you." This is the first time that we learn what "D.W." stands for. It's also the first time that she does not like being called by her full name and people only use her full name when they are mad at her.

The next day is the day of the circus. Arthur has fewer spots on his face than he did before and he no longer has a fever, so Grandma Thora lets him go to the circus. D.W., on the other hand, actually gets chicken pox. D.W. celebrates because now she knows she will get all the things that Arthur was getting when he was sick. D.W. ends the episode trying to make Arthur feel jealous because she has spots and he doesn't. Arthur tells her that she will miss the circus. She says "Who cares? The circus comes every year, but you only get chicken pox once." At the end of the episode, we see Arthur smiling (proving that her attempts to make him jealous failed).
11. In "Sick as a Dog," why is Pal sick?

Answer: Because Arthur feeds him human food

Arthur feeds pancakes and candy to Pal. Pal also steals D.W.'s hot dog. After that, D.W. says "someday I'm going to teach that dog a lesson that he won't forget." Later on, Pal walks towards Arthur's room and falls down, then makes a weird noise. Arthur takes Pal to his parents, who tell him that they will take him to the vet.

The vet keeps Pal overnight. The next day, Pal is set free. Before he goes home, the vet tells Arthur that Pal ate a lot of things that a dog shouldn't eat and then the vet gives him a book about what dogs should eat. When Arthur gets home, he apologizes to Pal, and also to D.W. because he and his friend had accused her of making him sick because she said she'd teach him a lesson that he wouldn't forget. D.W. says that she still plans to do that. She got a dog training book from the library, but she cannot read it so she demands Arthur do it. Meanwhile, while D.W. isn't looking, Pal pops her inflatable ball, gets out of his leash, and attaches her toy bunny to the leash. As D.W. tells Arthur about what she is going to train Pal to do, she unknowingly walks with her toy bunny attached to the leash behind her.
12. In "D.W. Rides Again," does she learn to ride a bicycle before the Bike-a-Thon?

Answer: Yes

After finding out that Arthur and his friends will ride in the Bike-a-thon, after finding out that her tricycle cannot keep up with the bicycles, and after being teased by the Tibbles about it, D.W. tells her parents that she wants a bicycle. She gets one and Arthur teaches her how to ride it.

The Tibbles then mock her for using training wheels. With Arthur's help, she convinces her parents to remove them. Then for a while, she continues to practice riding, falling off, and getting bandages all over her body. Eventually, she learns how to ride a bike and she participates in the bike-a-thon.
13. In "Arthur Makes the Team," what does Francine struggle with?

Answer: Pitching

Arthur struggles with catching and Francine struggles with pitching. The latter's father is the coach and he tells them to work together. She teaches him how to catch and he teaches her how to pitch. The playoff game comes and all of a sudden, they are both great at what they used to be bad at.

In the end, Buster hits a ball high, and the other team catches it for the final out. Arthur's team loses. As Mr Frensky and most of the kids try to cheer up Buster, Francine starts to scold him, but then the other kids make her be nice.
14. In "The Half Baked Sale," no one likes Grandma Thora's cookies.

Answer: False

"The Half Baked Sale" begins with Arthur telling the viewing audience about all the great things Grandma Thora has done. When Arthur tells stories to his father and grandmother, she answers his father's questions about the stories. She also always fills in if someone gets sick; in one case, she became an umpire at a little league game. Right before the title card, Arthur reveals her one weakness: cooking.

After the title card, we learn that Arthur's parents are going away to take care of Jane's mother. Grandma Thora will babysit the kids. She tells the parents that she has a new recipe that she wants to try. David says that he left some money so she could order something from a restaurant. Grandma Thora says that the only reason Dave thinks that she is a bad cook is because he's a professional.

We then see Thora trying to cook while talking on the phone. Kate notices some obvious mistakes, such as dumping the egg yolk in the sink and putting the shells in the batter. Kate tastes a bit of the dinner and she cries.

Arthur and D.W. are on the swings, talking about their grandmother's cooking. They agree that her cooking is bad, but they do not want to tell her because they do not want to hurt her feelings.

When dinner is served, Arthur tastes it and he does not like it. D.W. tries to trade her dinner with Pal, but Pal growls at her. When dessert is served, Grandma Thora admits that the pudding was on the stove for too long because she was on the phone while she was making it. Thora then tells the kids that she is in charge of a bake sale at the school. This makes Arthur panic.

After hanging up the signs, Arthur tries to tell Grandma Thora about her cooking, but he loses his nerve. Ms McGrady arrives and says hello to Grandma Thora, ending Arthur's conversation with her. Ms McGrady offers to help Thora with the cooking, but Thora rejects her help. Later, Thora tells the kids that their father starting cooking when he was eight. D.W. says "I believe it," suggesting that the reason their father started cooking when he was so young is because he did not like his mother's cooking. When the kids are alone, Arthur tells D.W. that he has a plan.

At the bake sale, Thora is summoned away from her cookies to take care of a banner that fell down and she leaves the kids in charge of them. This is when Arthur tells D.W. of his plan. They steal the cookies and plan to hide them in his locker. Unfortunately, Grandma Thora is right near his locker. Instead, they hide the cookies in the janitor's closet.

Mr Morris goes to open the closet door. When he does, a big metal bucket (which has the cookies) falls on his leg. Thankfully, it isn't broken. Grandma Thora asks the kids who put the cookies in the closet. Arthur confesses that he and D.W. did it because they thought her cooking was bad and they didn't want to hurt their feelings, so they thought this was the best thing to do.

Grandma Thora asks Ms McGrady if she is a bad cook. Ms McGrady tells her that she always gets busy with other things and you cannot cook a good meal when you are busy. Arthur and D.W. tell her that they still love her and and that she is great at other things. This cheers her up and she returns to work on the banner. The kids decide to clean up the cookies. Thora thanks them for having the courage to tell the truth.

When the kids go to where the cookies were, the cookies are now gone. The kids discover that Buster found them on the ground, he is eating them, and he loves them. Arthur and D.W. are stunned.
15. In "Team Trouble," what ancient place do Arthur, Buster, and Francine do an oral report on?

Answer: Rome

Mr Ratburn assigns the three of them to do a group project on their own. They ultimately agree to make a comic book about it. They decide to start it off by having the three of them work on one page individually at home. Arthur does the first page, Francine does the second page and Buster does the third page. They are all proud of their work when they finish their pages at home.

The next day, they show their pages to each other. All of their pages are completely different, so they cannot be combined into one cohesive story. They all demand that the other two redo their pages to look like theirs. They then agree to show their pages to other people to see which one they like the best.

Arthur shows his page to Prunella, who tells him that his page has no real history. Francine shows her page to Brain, who sees that her page is about the Olympics and he tells her that the Olympics were in Greece, not Rome. He also tells her that the Romans banned the Olympics in 194 B.C. (which is incorrect but Francine does not know that) and asks Francine if she did any research. Buster shows his page to Binky who says that he likes it, but then Buster realizes that Binky is not all that smart so he decides that it's bad if Binky likes it. The three of them realize that they all have to start over, but they don't have much time so they are going to fail.
