Separated from Europe by the Urals, Asia covers over 44 million kmē (17 million sq mi) - about 30% of the Earth's land surface - and is home to about 4.7 billion people. More than half of the continent's population lives in China and India, the world's 4th- and 7th-largest countries by area.

Russia's land area covers a staggering 17 million kmē (over 6.5 million sq mi) - most of which lies between the Urals and the Pacific Ocean. Russia has land borders with 14 countries, as does China. Though rich in natural resources, Siberia is notorious for its harsh winter climate, which is the main reason for its very sparse population.

The civilizations that developed in China and India thousands of years ago are in some cases older than those of Europe and the Middle East. Paper-making and gunpowder, together with the compass and printing, are known as the Four Great Inventions for their impact on the rest of the world. Over 150 languages are spoken in India; Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism are all major religions that originated in the Indian subcontinent.

Located on the island of Honshu, Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the most populous metropolitan area in the world, home to over 40 million people. Shanghai lies on the estuary of the Yangtze River, on the East China Sea.

Mount Everest lies on the border between Nepal and China, in the Himalayas, where most of the world's highest mountains are also located. The Caspian Sea, a huge saltwater lake, is bordered by Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan; its northern part lies within Eastern Europe. Mostly covered by hot desert and rich in oil, the Arabian Peninsula is bordered by the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea.

The Yangtze River flows through central China from west to east; a number of major cities lie along its course. The world's longest river is the Nile, which flows in Africa from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea; the second-longest is the Amazon, which flows in South America.
