Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did Carly Beth want a haunted mask in "The Haunted Mask"?

Answer: To get revenge against bullies

Carly Beth constantly gets picked on by two bullies named Chuck and Steve. She goes to a mask store to find the scariest mask she can find so she can get revenge against them. One mask in particular catches her attention. The shopkeeper says it's not for sale, but she takes it anyway and gives him money.

She terrorizes Chuck and Steve and gets her revenge. Then, the mask won't come off. She goes to the shopkeeper to get it off. He tells her that the mask is actually a real face and it will only come off with a symbol of love. As the other masks chase her, she shows them a plaster head that her mother made for her because she loved her. That symbol of love allows Carly Beth to take off the mask.
2. What happens to Tara the Terrible at the end of "The Cuckoo Clock of Doom"?

Answer: She is erased from existence

Michael's little sister Tara, whom he calls "Tara the Terrible", always plays pranks on him and terrorizes him. Twelve-year-old Michael wants revenge. When he sees her father telling her not to mess with his cuckoo clock, he has a plan. He wakes up in the middle of the night and turns the head of the bird around, thinking that Tara will get blamed and he'll have his revenge.

Time goes backwards until Michael is a baby and Tara has not been born. When his parents take him to the antique shop with the cuckoo clock, baby Michael climbs up to the top of the clock. He accidentally knocks off the year 1988 in the process, but he turns the head back around. Now he's 12 again. He soon discovers that because he knocked the year 1988 off of the clock, that year has been erased from existence. This means that, because Tara was born in 1988, she is erased from existence.
3. Who is the phantom in "The Phantom of the Auditorium"?

Answer: Brian

An elementary school decides to put on a play called "The Phantom of the Auditorium". Brooke's understudy, Tina, warns everybody that the play is cursed by the real phantom, but everyone ignores her and assumes that she's jealous that Brooke got the part and she didn't. The rehearsal group accidentally discovers a trap door, which leads to the home of a homeless man, Emile. To prevent people from finding his home again, Emile pulls a series of pranks and frames Zeke, the actor who plays the phantom, for all of them. Zeke initially gets booted from the play, but when the truth is discovered, Emile runs out of the building to evade the police and Zeke gets his job back.

One day, a seemingly-new boy named Brian appears at rehearsal, claiming he used to be in all the school plays and wishing he had been in this one. He helps the kids expose Emile and clear Zeke's name. During the play, Brian rises up from the trap door and knocks Zeke out. Brian tells Brooke and the audience that he was cast to play the phantom over 70 years ago. On the night of the play, he fell through the trap door, died, and became a real phantom. He'd been waiting over 70 years for the school to do the play again so he could perform his part. He tries to drag Brooke in the trap door, but she removes his mask and he dies again. The audience and the director think this is all part of the act.
4. In the episode (not the book) "Piano Lessons Can Be Murder", what is Mr. Toggle's punishment for trying to steal Jerry's hands?

Answer: He has to play piano forever

When Jerry's family moves into a new house, Jerry notices a piano that seems to play by itself. Jerry asks his parents to sign him up for piano lessons, which they do. Jerry discovers that the piano school is no ordinary school. It's got high-tech security at the entrance and a robotic floor sweeper, both of which were designed by the janitor, Mr. Toggle, whom the teacher, Dr. Shreek, describes as a "mechanical genius."

One night, Jerry discovers a ghost playing the piano at home. The ghost warns Jerry to stay away from the piano school. At Jerry's next lesson, Dr. Shreek tries to steal Jerry's hands. Jerry runs away and discovers a room full of disembodied hands playing the piano. Mr. Toggle disables Dr. Shreek and we learn that Dr. Shreek is a robot. However, then Mr. Toggle tries to steal Jerry's hands so he can use them to make beautiful music. Mr. Toggle says that he can't design robot hands because there's too many moving parts, so he steals real hands. The ghost appears and saves Jerry. The ghost was Mr. Toggle's piano teacher when he was a kid. It turns out Mr. Toggle was too lazy to practice the piano, so in order to make the music he wanted to make, he stole hands from other people and use them to make music. To punish Mr. Toggle for this, the ghost forces him to play the piano forever.
5. In "Night of the Living Dummy Two", who defeats Slappy?

Answer: Dennis

Amy tells jokes with her doll, Dennis, on family fun nights. When Dennis's head falls off, her father buys her a new doll. The new doll's name is Slappy and he comes with a card with some strange words written on them, which Amy reads. This makes Slappy come to life, but Amy is the only one who notices that for several days. At family fun nights, Slappy tells his own jokes. He also causes a lot of pranks around the house such as drawing on Amy's sister's painting and grabbing the hand of Amy's best friend. Amy's family thinks that she is doing these things and her friends stop being her friends; they all think she is crazy when she says that Slappy is alive and is doing these things.

After Amy throws Slappy down the sewer, he comes back. He tells Amy that she will forever be his slave because she read the words on his card. He also tells Amy that he will hurt her and her family in many ways if she refuses to cooperate. Slappy's plan is to possess Amy and control her entire family through her, but just before she can do that, her sister Sara steps in and gets him off of her. Amy and Sara hug and make up, but then Slappy gets a hold of Amy again. Just before Slappy can possess Amy, Dennis kills him. Apparently Dennis is alive too.
6. In "Stay Out of the Basement", the man whom the kids think is their father is really a... what?

Answer: Plant

After Margaret's mother goes away for a few days to take care of a sick relative, Margaret notices her father acting strangely. Her mother and her brother Casey assure her that he's fine and he's just depressed because he got fired, but she is not buying it. As she spies on him, she discovers leaves growing out of his head and green fluid coming out of his arm. She also sees him eating plant fluid and trying to make the kids eat it. After seeing too many strange things, she goes into the basement to investigate.

She discovers that what she thought was her father was actually a plant clone of him, and her real father was tied up in the basement. She sprays the plant father with weed killer and kills him. The real father reveals that he cut his hand, his blood mixed in with some plant molecules and created a creature that was part plant and part human. The creature was going to make plant copies of the whole family (which is why it tried to feed the kids plant food). The real father gets his job back. As the family goes inside for lunch, Margaret hears several flowers saying that they are her father.
7. In "It Came From Beneath the Sink", the grool looks like a... what?

Answer: Sponge

When her family moves into a new house, Katherine discovers something under the sink that looks like a sponge but with glowing red eyes and a mouth. Most of the family never sees the eyes and the mouth, so they think it's just a sponge, but terrible things happen. Katherine's mother's dishes break, a glass breaks, her brother Daniel cuts his foot on the broken glass, the dog disappears, and the brakes on Katherine's bicycle fail. Eventually, Daniel and his friend Carlo also see that this is no ordinary sponge. They leave it at school with the biology teacher to do some tests on it to find out what it is.

Carlo gets a book called "Encyclopedia of the Weird". It reveals that the "sponge" is really a grool, which causes bad luck to the owner and her family. If the owners gives it away, the owner dies within the next 24 hours. He also tells Katherine that she should be glad she didn't find a lanx, a creature that looks like a potato but sucks the life force right out of its owner. Katherine is the owner of the grool because she found it. She had left it at school, so she, Daniel, and Carlo sneak into the school at night to get it back. There is a janitor whose tape player plays "You are My Sunshine"; the kids discover that the happy music shrinks the grool. The tape player breaks, but then the kids shrink it by complimenting it. The grool cannot be killed, but Katherine keeps it in a cage with headphones listening to "You Are My Sunshine", rendering it ineffective. The dog comes home and brings back a present for Katherine. To her horror, she discovers that the present is a lanx.
8. In "Say Cheese and Die", the camera does what?

Answer: Predict the future

Greg steals a camera from an old man named Spidey. He discovers that the camera predicts the future and makes it bad. It destroys his father's new car and it makes his best friend Shari disappear. When he takes it back to where he got it, Spidey tells him that he invented the camera to help people see the future. To his horror, Spider discovered that the camera not only predicted the future, it made the future happen and it was always a disaster. Spidey intends to keep Greg and Shari trapped here so they don't tell anybody about the camera, but Greg takes a picture of Spidey with the camera and traps Spidey in the camera.

A few hours later, two bullies break into the house and find the camera and they take a picture with it, freeing Spidey.
9. In "A Night in Terror Tower", why were Eddie and Sue sent to the future?

Answer: To avoid execution

A brother and sister named Eddie and Sue are part of a tour group visiting museums and ancient dungeons. At Terror Tower, they discover a ghost warning them to go away and they discover that one of the wax figures of men with axes is actually a real man with an axe and he wants to kill them. As he chases them throughout London, the kids discover that they cannot remember anything other than what they did that day. They cannot remember their last names, their parents, where they live, or any other days of their lives.

The man with the axe is revealed to be an executioner and he takes the kids to the past to be executed. In the tower, the ghost that had been warning them makes an appearance in the form of a regular man. He says that they are actually Prince Edward and Princess Susanna. The executioner is their uncle and he wants to be king. He murdered their parents, the rightful king and queen, so they inherited the throne, which means that he must kill them in order for him to become king. The formerly-ghostly man introduces himself as Morgred, the king's sorceror. He sent the kids 500 years into the future so they wouldn't be executed. He also erased their memories and gave them new memories, but the memories were not complete (that's why they couldn't remember much). The spell wears off and they remember everything. Edward steals three white stones from the executioner and gives them to Morgred, who takes the kids back to the future. This time, he also gets himself back in the future and he becomes their guardian. The executioner also gets back into the future, but they get away from him and he never sees where they went.
10. Who is the werewolf of fever swamp?

Answer: Will

The Tucker family moves to a house that's next to a swamp. The parents are scientists who want to observe how deer adapt to the swamp environment. There don't seem to be many people living in the area. Grady explores the area around the swamp and meets a deranged man. His father tells him that the neighbors told him that the man lost his entire family, but he is harmless. A neighbor boy named Will tells Grady that the man is a werewolf.

One night, a dog gets into the house. The parents reluctantly keep him on the condition that he sleeps outside. Soon, rabbits die and there's a big hole in the fence which allows the deer to escape. The parents think Vandal is responsible and they plan to take him to the pound, but Grady knows that Vandal is innocent and he locks his mother in the shed while his father drives away. That night, Vandal disappears and Will calls for help, so Grady explores the swamp to find them both. He discovers that the strange man is not a werewolf and that the actual werewolf murdered the man's family. The actual werewolf then kills the man and chases Grady. There is a perfect lunar eclipse which causes the werewolf to partially return to human form. It is Will. He warns Grady to run away, but Grady stays around so he can help him. When the eclipse is over, Will turns back into a wolf and grabs Grady, but Vandal appears, makes Will let Grady go, and knocks Will into the swamp where he sinks and drowns.
