Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many pages did the standard Ladybird Book have?

Answer: 52

Each book had 52 pages. The books were made from one large sheet of paper measuring 40 inches by 30 inches. A picture of one of these sheets can be seen in the book "The Story of Printing."
2. What was the price of a Ladybird Book in the 1940s?

Answer: 2,6

2,6, that is 12.5 pence in decimal currency. The books stayed at this price until 1971.
3. When was the first pocket-sized, 7 inches tall by 4.75 inches wide, book published?

Answer: 1940

It was called "Bunnikin's Picnic Party", written by A J MacGregor who wrote several more books for Ladybird.
4. In the book "Tootles the Taxi", what was the name of the tractor?

Answer: Tony

Archie was an ambulance, Larry was a lorry and Terry was a tanker.
5. Which of the following was NOT a book in the "Adventure from History" series?

Answer: The Story of Tony Blair

Ladybird never published a book about Tony Blair. The other three books were published in the late 1950s and were written by L Du Garde Peach and illustrated by John Kenny.
6. What were the names of the two children in the "Key Reading Scheme"?

Answer: Peter and Jane

I do apologise if this question is too easy. Bob and Mary were two children who lived next door to Peter and Jane. Their surname was Green and they had a younger sister called Molly. Susan and John were two children from an earlier learning to read series. Fish and chips is a meal associated with the seaside.
7. What was the name of the dog in the "Key Reading Scheme"?

Answer: Pat

It was A beautiful red setter. The only dog in history never to defecate.
8. Which of the following was NOT featured in the "People at Work" series?

Answer: The Teacher.

I wonder why. Perhaps the publishers believed that children would be too familiar with the work of teachers and the classroom.
9. On the front cover of the "Cinderella" book from the "606d" series, "Well Loved Tales", what was the colour of Cinderella's dress?

Answer: Pink

This has proved to be a very popular book with collectors.
10. The series "606c" was devoted to sport. Unfortunately only two books were ever published. Which sports did these two books cover?

Answer: Football and Cricket

These two books are a great source of information. Several Kings and Elizabeth I all passed laws forbidding men to play football, they probably didn't understand the off side rule.
