2. There is another Hemulen in the picture but without a number above him.
In the picture, the Groke stands apart from everyone else, watching them with a sad expression - and this is no coincidence. Wherever she goes, she leaves behind a chill; vegetation withers beneath her feet. As a result, others avoid her, and she remains deeply lonely. The Groke is a gray creature with large, expressionless eyes and a wide nose. Her isolation may explain her yearning for light and warmth, and the comfort she seeks in objects that symbolize love. The Moomins fear her, but they also pity her.
The Groke can be seen as a symbol of those who, through no fault of their own, evoke discomfort - such as the terminally ill, the mentally ill, or the deeply depressed. People often distance themselves from such individuals to shield themselves from pain or to avoid confronting the less joyful aspects of life. But that very distancing only deepens the loneliness of those who are already suffering.
2. One of the Hemulens
I'm not sure which specific Hemulen it is, but any Moomin fan will immediately recognize a character from the Hemulen family tree.
So, who are the Hemulens? They are somewhat similar to Moomintrolls, but taller and thinner, with no visible ears, and they typically wear dresses. Hemulens are responsible and orderly by nature - they value rules and structure, and expect others to do the same. As a result, many of them end up in positions of authority that involve wearing a uniform. They are obsessive about collecting everything from plants and stamps to insects, and they pursue these hobbies with the utmost seriousness. They can be a bit bossy and humorless, but at times, they can also be surprisingly good-natured and even fun.
3. Moominpappa
Moominpappa is easily recognized by his black top hat and walking stick. He loves adventure and is always seeking something new and exciting, but he's also practical and never forgets his responsibilities as the head of the family - for instance, he built the Moominhouse with his own hands. Before settling down, his life was a whirlwind of excitement and drama.
He sees himself as a thinker and a gifted storyteller, often found mingling with the bohemians of Moominvalley in deep philosophical conversations. Moominpappa also enjoys relaxing in his hammock with a glass of whiskey and a good book.
4. Mrs Fillyjonk
The Fillyjonks are the complete opposite of the Moomin family. While the Moomins embrace a carefree and spontaneous way of life, Mrs. Fillyjonk is known for her strictness and her devotion to rules, order, and cleanliness. The Fillyjonks often wear worried expressions, easily unsettled by insects or anything unpleasant, and quickly frustrated when things don't go their way.
Yet Mrs. Fillyjonk takes great pride in raising her children properly and keeping their home tidier than any other in the valley. She is easily recognized by her red dress and matching red hat - sometimes accessorized with a handbag and umbrella. Her three children wear similar red outfits. Though she frequently debates whether to leave Moominvalley, she always ends up staying.
5. Moomintroll
Like his father, Moomintroll loves going on adventures, often in the company of his colorful friends - especially Snufkin and Little My. His sensitivity, kindness, and caring nature make him a true friend who, in difficult moments, often reveals himself as a quiet hero, rescuing his companions from yet another misadventure. Though his sensitivity sometimes draws teasing, he never holds a grudge against his friends or family.
He has a special fondness - some would say love - for Snorkmaiden. Moomintroll is fascinated by the sea; in his free time, he dives for pearls, most of which he gives to Snorkmaiden so she can feel like the most beautiful of all. He is the only son of the Moomin family and loves them more than anything.
6. Snufkin
Snufkin is known for his carefree spirit, gentle empathy, and deep love of adventure. He never stays in one place for long, wandering from land to land with a constant urge to explore. Between his journeys, he's often found on the bridge in the heart of Moominvalley, wearing his green hat, playing the harmonica, fishing, and smoking his pipe.
Snufkin is not materialistic, viewing possessions as a burden on one's freedom. He carries everything he owns in a single backpack. His aversion to material things is so strong that he even struggles to buy new items-for example, when he needed new trousers, he couldn't bring himself to purchase them because they were too new and clean for his taste.
Snufkin is respected - and even admired - by many of the valley's creatures for his enigmatic and independent nature. His best friend, Moomintroll, always feels sad when Snufkin leaves on one of his journeys alone. Though Moomintroll begs to join, Snufkin gently explains that solitude is part of who he is, and that he needs time to be by himself.
7. Stinky
Stinky is a troublemaker. He's a small, furry creature with skinny legs and two little tentacles - angry, annoying, and constantly up to no good. He spends most of his time playing pranks, and yes, he does it out of pure malice! He takes great pleasure in driving others crazy and stealing whatever he can. Stinky proudly embraces his role as the villain and puts effort into maintaining his bad reputation. Unfortunately for him, he's not a particularly skilled criminal and is often caught red-handed.
As you might expect, he's not exactly popular at parties, though he somehow always shows up uninvited. While he gives the Moomin family the occasional headache, they're secretly a little amused to know a "real" criminal in their otherwise peaceful valley.
8. Snorkmaiden
Snorkmaiden is a dreamer. She is highly creative and often daydreams about beautiful maidens and gallant heroes. Her explosive creativity, resourcefulness, and quick thinking often save the day. In the collective memory of Moominvalley, one moment stands out: the time she rescued Moomintroll from a giant octopus using nothing but a red mirror. Although she may sometimes seem a little self-assured or change her mind unexpectedly, she is deeply loved by all the creatures of the valley for her kindness and warmth. No one brings her more joy than Moomintroll - well, perhaps also expensive jewelry.
Snorkmaiden is a Snork, a species similar in appearance to Moomins but with one delightful difference: they change color according to their emotions. You can recognize Snorkmaiden by her carefully combed blond hair and the ring she wears on her foot.
9. Moominmamma
Moominmamma is the heart of the Moomin family - always there to comfort, reassure, and make others feel safe. She has a rare talent for making people feel truly cared for. Patient and deeply empathetic, she respects each person's individuality and believes that life teaches best through experience. Even when the absent-minded Moominpappa breaks a plate, she gently reassures him by saying she's glad it broke, as it was ugly and she never liked it anyway.
Nothing is too small for her attention, and you can trust her with your secrets - Moominmamma would never tell. Her kindness extends beyond her own family: her exceptional memory allows her to remember the birthdays of everyone in the valley, always celebrated with pudding and a thoughtful gift. You may be surprised to learn that Moominmamma has a rebellious side. She loves parties and has a surprising affection for Stinky, the infamous criminal of Moominvalley -sometimes even going so far as to hide him from the police.
10. Too-ticky
Too-ticky wearing a striped shirt and dark pants, and a hat. She is a long-time friend of the Moomin family - pragmatic and wise, with a knack for solving almost any problem. Grounded in reality, she understands that sometimes in life, not everything broken can be fixed, and that's okay.
She never tells others how to live; she believes they must discover it for themselves. Her nature is full of compassion for all living creatures, including the Groke, the monster feared by nearly everyone in the valley. Unlike most of the Moominvalley creatures, she doesn't hibernate, setting her apart in quiet, thoughtful ways.
11. Miffle
Miffle is a lonely and timid girl who lives in fearful isolation, too afraid to ask for help-until one day, in a moment of quiet bravery, she sends a message in a bottle pleading for rescue from the terrifying Groke. Though she doesn't know who might find it, the simple act of reaching out marks the beginning of her transformation. Her message reaches Toffle, a boy just as shy and frightened as she is. Miffle waits, unsure if anyone will come, her world still shadowed by fear. But when Toffle arrives - trembling, yet determined to help her - something shifts. In their meeting, Miffle discovers not only safety, but recognition: someone who understands her fear and her silence.
Their meeting becomes a turning point: both Toffle and Miffle, two lonely and anxious children, find comfort and strength in each other. Through their bond, they each experience emotional growth, gaining confidence and breaking free from the loneliness they've been trapped in. Miffle represents vulnerability, fear, and the deep human need for kindness.
12. Little My
Don't be fooled by Little My's size. Though she's small enough to fit in Snufkin's pocket, she's fearless, bold, and irresistibly drawn to adventure and drama. You'll usually find her right in the middle of some mischievous scheme. She's cheeky, full of energy, and especially loves teasing Moomintroll, often leaving a trail of small disasters in her wake.
Despite her wild and reckless behavior, Little My is sociable, spirited, and fiercely loyal to her friends. She never acts out of malice, and, in a crisis, her courage and dependability make her the perfect companion. Little My, short and sharp-tongued, is easily recognized by her bright red dress and her copper-red hair tied in a tight bun. Little My is part of the Mymbles family, which includes her calm older sister, the Mymble's daughter, and her younger half-sibling, Snufkin.
13. Ninny
Ninni was not always an invisible child; she became that way as a result of physical and emotional abuse by her aunt while living in her care. The kind-hearted Moomin family took her in to provide safety and warmth, hoping to help her become visible again. Ninni is a polite and proper girl - she does what's expected of her, plays out of courtesy rather than joy, and seems incapable of expressing anger.
Despite the difficulty, the Moomins' devoted care slowly paid off: bit by bit, her body began to reappear until she became fully visible once more.
As her true personality emerged, Ninni proved to be a spirited child with strong feelings and desires. As Little My put it, "It takes a good dose of anger for Ninni to become her true self again."
14. The Dweller Under the Sink
This small, hairy creature lives - just as you might have guessed - under the sink in the Moomin house. He is only active during the winter, when he meets Moomintroll, who has awakened during the Moomins' hibernation. He doesn't like being laughed at for his eyebrows.
15. The Squirrel with the Marvelous Tail
The cute squirrel is a friend of Moomintroll and Little My, though he once woke her from sleep and she screamed at him in response. He is absent-minded and has a notoriously poor memory, often repeating things out loud just to remember them. He is also quite fond of his magnificent tail. Tragically, the squirrel freezes to death after looking into the eyes of the Lady of the Cold.
At the end of the book "Moominland Midwinter", Moomintroll meets a new squirrel with the same name and the same poor memory. To this day, no one in Moominvalley knows for sure whether it's the same squirrel - or a different one.
