Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was written by Roald Dahl and published in 1964. The inspiration for the book came to Roald while he was at school in Repton. Samples from the Cadbury Chocolate Company were sent to the children at the school to taste test. From this experience, Roald wrote his third children's book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

According to Patricia Neal, Roald's wife, Charlie Bucket was supposed to be black in the book, but Roald's publisher had him change Charlie to a white boy because the publisher didn't think readers would respond to a black boy. Charlie was the only golden ticket winner who didn't come from money. His family was so poor that all four of his grandparents slept in the same bed while the rest of the family slept in the floor. They also had very little food to eat and only on Sundays did they enjoy two helpings of their meager meal.

Originally, the Oompa-Loompas were described as African pygmies in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", but the NAACP had misgivings about this and Roald agreed to change the text and have Quentin Blake change the illustrations of the Oompa-Loompas. Several edits were also made in the book taking out the word 'tiny' when describing the Oompa-Loompas.

Roald Dahl went through many name changes for the children in the book. The worst name he came up with was Herpes Trout which was later changed to Mike Teavee.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" has been turned into movies, video games, musicals, radio productions, and animated programs.
