Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The entire Read family goes to Ohio except who?

Answer: Grandpa Dave

They have family in Ohio. This fact was previously established in "Arthur's Birthday," but we didn't meet many of them then. In this episode, the family takes a trip to Ohio and we see more of their relatives. Arthur, D.W., Mr Read, and Grandma Thora are all part of the road trip. Mrs Read and Kate stay home for most of the episode because Kate is not feeling well, but Kate gets better. Mrs Read and Kate arrive in Ohio in a taxi at the end of the episode. Grandpa Dave is not in the episode. That is probably because he is Jane's father, so he is not really a Read.
2. Which non-Read goes on the trip?

Answer: Buster

The Read family and the Baxter family often take trips together. "Postcards From Buster" and "Arthur's New Old Vacation" are other episodes in which this happens. D.W. does not like that Buster is on the trip, but everybody else is happy that he is there. D.W. tells her father that if Buster can go on the trip, Bud should be allowed on the trip too. Mr. Reads say "Bud lives too far away," which suggests that this takes place after "When Duty Calls," the episode in which the Compson family leaves Elwood City and moves to Oregon.

At one point in the episode, Buster lies in the dirt alone, feeling sad that he is not related to anybody there. Miles finds him and tells him that he is also not related to anyone there. He is just a friend of the family. The family took him in and raised him like he was part of the family. They call him "Cousin Miles" even though he is not a cousin. He tells Buster that you do not have to be a biological relative to be family. He sings the song "I See You" to help Buster understand that. On the second day, there's a rooster with the llamas. Miles tells Buster that even though a rooster is not a llama, the llamas take care of the rooster like family just like the Reads take care of Miles like family, and this cheers Buster up.

Near the end of the episode, Buster finds a unique soda bottle and puts some flowers in it. He gives it to Theodore as a birthday present because his real birthday present for Theodore (a box of chocolates) was in his lost bag (the one that fell off the car). Theodore loves the bottle because it's of a kind of soda that no longer gets sold. It turns out that it used to belong to the original D.W. To thank him for this, Theodore declares Buster as an honorary member of the Read family.
3. Who sings "I'm Bored"?

Answer: D.W. and her father

D.W. does not like long road trips, so she sings this song to complain. Throughout the song, her father tries to calm her down. He ends the song by telling her to count the sheep that they pass on the road. D.W. does that, then she falls asleep, then the song ends.
4. What kind of animal appears on the highway (before the Reads get to the farm)?

Answer: Raccoon

A raccoon gets right in front of the car. Dave manages to move the car to avoid the raccoon, but he has to swerve out of the way to do so. This causes Buster's bag to fall off the roof because it is not tied down. It was tied down before the trip, but at the rest stop, Buster untied it to get his checkers game so they could play in the car and he did not tie it down again.

The raccoon ends up opening the bag, damaging the comics inside, eating the chocolates, and getting sick.
5. What kind of animal is Bernice?

Answer: Llama

When the Reads arrive at the farm, the first resident they see is Bernice, a pregnant llama. There are several llamas on the farm. They are friendly and the Reads are given the opportunity to pat them.
6. Who is Arthur's cousin?

Answer: Ryder

Ryder enjoys swimming in the pond and swinging on a rope. He also catches creatures and collects them for his pond museum. He keeps them for a day to observe, and the next day, he lets them go. He also likes sleeping on hay. He does not like Dark Bunny.

Miles is called "Cousin Miles" but he is not a biological cousin. He is a friend of the family who was raised by the family. Theodore is Arthur's great-uncle. Shelley is Binky's real name.
7. Who is the oldest member of the family?

Answer: Theodore

He celebrates his 85th birthday, which is why the family are visiting him. He and D.W. spend time together because there's no one else there that's his age or her age. His sister is named "Dora Winifred" and D.W. was named after her. It seems the original Dora Winifred looks and behaves similarly to the current one.

The original one died before the current one was born, but Theo shows pictures of the original D.W. to the current one.
8. What kind of animal is D.W. afraid of?

Answer: Lizard

There is a lizard that shows up around D.W. or on top of D.W. at various points throughout the episode. D.W. screams in terror whenever she sees it. When her father first sees it, he gets it off of her but accidentally breaks its tail. D.W. thinks the lizard will want revenge against her for breaking its tail. Theodore shows her his lizard-catcher.
9. Who gets injured?

Answer: Buster

Arthur and Ryder swing on a rope, then let go and fall in the pond so they can go swimming. Buster intends to do the same thing, but he runs to the rope which makes it go too fast. He ends up landing back on the dock and injuring his foot. He didn't break it, but he was taken to a hospital where they put a splint in his foot and told him that he could not go swimming for the next few days. That's a big deal because it's hot there and the farm does not have air conditioning.

It's also a big deal because he has fewer alternative activities than he expected because his bag (which has all his comic books and games) fell off the car on the trip and was lost.
10. Which two characters get homesick on the first night and sing a song about it?

Answer: D.W. and Buster

Ryder plans to have Arthur and Buster sleep in the hay loft with him, but there's a ladder to the loft and Buster cannot use it due to his injured foot. He ends up having to sleep in the house and sharing a room with D.W., who makes some pointless rules for him (rules that she cannot enforce because it is not her home, but that fact seems to get ignored). Buster goes along with the rules to not cause any problems, but it makes him unhappy. They also both miss their mothers.

To make matters worse, there is no air conditioning. Buster decides to sleep on the porch where there is a breeze. D.W. does not want to sleep alone, so she follows him. On the porch, they sing "Home or Here" a song to help them decide where they'd rather be. In the first verse, they agree that they'd rather be home. In the second verse, they both realize that life is good on the farm and there are no adventures for them to have here. They end up sleeping on a couch on the porch.
11. Does Ryder like Arthur's present?

Answer: No

Arthur gets Ryder a toy. Ryder says he likes it, but he tries to avoid talking about it as much as possible. On the second day, Arthur sees that Ryder never opened the box. Ryder says that he does not watch much TV because they get very few channels there.

He also says that he prefers swinging on the rope and swimming over TV and toys. Arthur is disappointed to learn that he and Ryder do not have as much in common as the thought, but he is still glad they are cousins.
12. Why does Arthur leave the hay loft in the middle of the night?

Answer: An owl is in the barn

An owl is in the barn screeching and making noise. Ryder says that the owl is harmless and is useful because owls keep the mice away from them. Arthur does not feel the same way. In the middle of the night, he runs out of the barn and into the house and he sleeps in the bed that D.W. was supposed to sleep in.
13. Although this episode aired before "An Arthur Thanksgiving," it takes place after it. One way we know that is when which aunt visits?

Answer: Minnie

"An Arthur Thanksgiving" is when D.W. meets Aunt Minnie. At one point, she calls her Aunt Meanie. In "The Rhythm and Roots of Arthur," D.W. recognizes Aunt Minnie. This means that "The Rhythm and Roots of Arthur" must take place after "An Arthur Thanksgiving." This confused audiences when this first aired, because "The Rhythm and Roots of Arthur" is the first time we see Minnie. Audiences had no way of knowing how D.W. could recognize her. In "An Arthur Thanksgiving," audiences were confused by D.W. not recognizing her when she'd met her in "The Rhythm and Roots of Arthur."

More evidence that "An Arthur Thanksgiving" takes place first is that Bud is in that episode but in "The Rhythm and Roots of Arthur," Bud cannot come on the trip because he lives on the other side of the country.
14. What is the name of the new baby animal?

Answer: Dora

D.W. had planned to leave the farm and walk home. Of course, if it took five hours to DRIVE from Elwood City to that farm, I cannot imagine how long it would take for a four-year-old girl to WALK that far. Aunt Minnie sees her and stops her and asks why she's leaving. D.W. says it's because no one pays attention to her there. Aunt Minnie tells her that they were all talking about her when she was leaving, so she is still important. During this conversation, a noise is heard from the llama barn. D.W. alerts Miles that Bernice is having a baby. Because D.W. is the first one to know about the situation and because she is the one who told Miles, she is the one who gets to name her.

She names her "Dora," which is what the "D" in "D.W." stands for.
15. At the end of the episode, who sings a song for the family?

Answer: Miles and Buster

The song is called "At This Table." Arthur plays piano and Ryder plays trumpet to back them up. The most important line is the last line in the song, "If you're here, you're family." The song is about the true meaning of family. Miles does not define family is biological relatives. Anybody that is on that farm is part of the family.
