Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This character was first depicted in a 1930s comic strip, then was later depicted by an actor in a TV series who also played a different character in that same series. Later still the character was played by a magician in three films in the '90s and then was CGI'ed in a TV series reboot. What's the character's name?

Answer: Thing

The disembodied hand in The Addams Family is named Thing (aka "Thing T. Thing") and it/he was created by cartoonist Charles Addams in his original comic strips running from 1938 to 1964. In the 1964 TV series, the hand would often crawl out of a wooden box, and Thing was usually played by actor Ted Cassidy who also more famously played Lurch the butler on the show.

In the film adaptations in the 1990s, Thing was played by magician Christopher Hart, who used his sleight-of-hand techniques in his portrayal. And then, in the 2022 Netflix series "Wednesday", Thing is usually depicted using practical effects and CGI, but Victor Dorobantu does provide some hand acting.
2. From Winter to Summer, reindeer eye color changes from what color to what color?

Answer: From blue to golden

Reindeer eyes change from blue in winter to gold in summer. A reflective layer behind the retina, called the tapetum lucidum, features that change; the golden color is prompted by the constant light of Summer. The purpose is that a golden hue reflects most light directly, aiding the reindeer in very bright conditions, while winter's darkness compresses collagen fibers, turning it blue to spread light across more photoreceptors resulting in better low-light sensitivity.

The boost in ultraviolet sensitivity also helps reindeer see lichen food under snow and predators against snowy white landscapes.
3. Which of these statements about Mars is NOT true?

Answer: Surface temperature ranges from -455°F to 160°F

Though the Martian surface temperature can fall to the unconscionably low of -220°F that is nowhere near as low as -455°F, and its highest surface temperature won't go much higher than 95°F at the extreme high end. That's much lower than 160°F.
4. In which film, directed by Michael Bay, was a scene shot in which actor Sean Connery stabbed someone in the hand, only to have the scene edited out of the final cut?

Answer: The Rock

When Michael Bay directed the 1996 action movie "The Rock," they filmed a scene in which Sean Connery's character John Mason stabbed Captain Darrow, played by David Morse, in the hand. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer saw the original release of the film and said it was disgusting, and so they edited it out of subsequent versions of the film. Michael Bay has since commented that these days "he's become a different audience member." He said that he shot it originally "because I thought it was cool. Now I would never shoot it." Those other films were released before Michael Bay ever directed a feature film.
5. What was the original color of the Statue of Liberty?

Answer: Copper

When it was unveiled in 1886, it was the color of a one cent U.S. coin, the copper penny. It is green today because of the oxidation that has occurred over time. Natural weathering has given the statue a green patina, along with the copper carbonate formation.
6. In the whole history of "Wrestlemania", which character had an unprecedented winning streak of 21 years, almost six times longer than Hulk Hogan's 1474-day streak?

Answer: The Undertaker

The Undertaker, a legendary WWE wrestler, won every single one of his matches at "WrestleMania" for 21 consecutive years, from "WrestleMania VII" to "WrestleMania XXVII". Finally, it took Brock Lesnar (an actual NCAA Division I national wrestling champion, and former actual UFC mixed martial arts Champion) to defeat The Undertaker. On April 6, 2014, at "WrestleMania XXX", Brock "The Beast Incarnate" Lesnar defeated him at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, one of the most memorable moments in wrestling history.
7. Which of these bizarre schemes was NOT one of the plans that Allied forces considered using in World War II against the Nazis?

Answer: injecting rabies into German dogs and wildlife

According to "Secret Weapons: Technology, Science, And The Race To Win World War II" by professor Brian Ford, British spies knew that Hitler used food-tasters, so simply poisoning him would be detected. But they surmised, what if they could somehow slowly infuse estrogen in his meals and drinks? Perhaps then he would become less aggressive, more "feminized" and then lose his intense interest on world domination. But the scheme wasn't attempted.

Other ideas included air dropping glue to make the German troops stick to the ground, and also air-dropping boxes of poisonous snakes. Also considered was putting bombs in tins of fruit and mailing them to Germany. And then there was the "Great Panjandrum", a 10-foot tall wheel filled with hundreds of pounds of explosives, and send it rolling on the Normandy coast. They even built and tested one, but it didn't work. That prototype cost $1 million in today's money.
8. In professional sports history, there have been teams called the Washington Capitals and the Washington Capitols. Which team was in which league?

Answer: Capitals in the NHL, Capitols in the NBA

The Washington Capitals are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League NHL), founded in 1974, as an expansion franchise. After a debut season that was the worst in NHL history, they eventually reached the Stanley Cup Final twice, in 1998 and 2018, winning their first and only Stanley Cup in 2018 by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1 in the series.

The Washington Capitols were an early pro basketball team that began in 1946 in the BAA (the Basketball Association of America that later merged into the NBA) becoming a charter NBA franchise in 1949; the team folded during the 1950-51 season with an overall record of 157-114.
9. During which war did the spontaneous "Christmas Truce" occur in which troops on opposing sides stopped fighting and sang carols?

Answer: World War I

On Christmas Eve 1914, in areas widespread along the Western Front, German and British troops sang carols, exchanged gifts, and even played soccer in no-man's-land, the strip of ground between the opposing British and German trench lines. These ceasefires were unofficial, and commanders frowned upon them, and even banned them. Hostilities would resume as the war continued.
10. Which two gemstones are of the mineral corundum?

Answer: Rubies and sapphires

The mineral corundum is mainly made up of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and it comes in two main gemstone varieties: ruby and sapphire. Rubies are the red corundum gemstones of course, whereas sapphires come not only in blue, but also all other colors of corundum, such as pink, yellow, green, purple, and white sapphires, which are colorless. They are among the hardest gemstones, scoring a 9 for hardness on the Mohs scale.
