Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He wasn't born "Bing". Bob Hope's co-star in many 'Road' comedies was universally known as Bing Crosby, but what was his birth name?

Answer: Harry

Harry Lillis Crosby was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1904. A multi-talented man, Crosby won a Best Actor Oscar in 1944 for his performance in "Going My Way", and at the time of his death in 1977 had sold over 400 million records.
2. Which actress did NOT star as Jenna Wade in the soap opera "Dallas"?

Answer: Barbara Eden

Jenna was first played in 1979 by Morgan Fairchild, making just one appearance. She was replaced by Francine Tacker the following year, and finally Priscilla Presley made the role her own from 1983-1988.
3. What is a williwaw?

Answer: A sudden violent wind

Originally used as a term to describe the squall raging along the Straits of Magellan, it is now used generally to describe any sudden or violent wind, particularly in Alaska or Canada. It is also interesting to note that the old Australian Aboriginal term for a whirlwind or sudden squall is willy-willy.
4. "We are American at puberty. We die French". What a lovely quote - which 20th century British novelist expressed such a sentiment?

Answer: Evelyn Waugh

Evelyn Arthur St.John Waugh, born in London in 1903, wrote what was probably his most popular book, "Brideshead Revisited", in 1945.
5. If I was an ecdysiast what would I do for a living?

Answer: Strip

Ecdysis is the act of casting off the outer skin or layer, hence an ecdysiast does just that, and is a striptease artist or erotic dancer!
6. In the world of fashion, which of the following is the odd one out?

Answer: Dolly Varden

A Dolly Varden is a large hat, taken from a character in Dicken's "Barnaby Rudge". Fahri, Karan and Klein are all designers.
7. How did George Jorgensen make medical history in 1952?

Answer: He became 'Christine' in the first publicised sex change operation

Convinced from a young age that all was not right with his assigned gender, George underwent surgery in Denmark, from where he famously informed his parents by letter "Nature made a mistake, which I have corrected. I am now your daughter".
8. The first decade of the 20th century saw the taking off, in every way, of powered flight. Who, in 1910, was the first person to fly a plane on the Australian continent?

Answer: Harry Houdini

Born Erik Weisz in Hungary in 1874, Houdini was to become well known as an escapologist and illusionist. In 1909 in Hamburg, Germany he became the proud owner of a Voisin bi-plane, which he used the following year to stake his claim as the first successful aviator in Australia, when he flew 6 miles in a little over 7 and a half minutes.
9. The Olympic Games originated in the ancient Greek sanctuary of Olympia in 776BC. Which Greek Deity were they honouring?

Answer: Zeus

Zeus was the Supreme God of the Greek parthenon, who revelled in his pursuit of the female form, be it goddess, nymph or human. The original Games were held every 4 years (known as an Olympiad) from 776BC to AD393, when they were banned by Emperor Theodosius l. The Games, as we now know them were instigated by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894.
10. In 1923 Scottish engineer, John Logie Baird was experimenting with a tea-chest, biscuit box and darning needles. This was his first prototype of an invention we now all take for granted. What was it?

Answer: Television

Baird obtained his first provisional patent in 1923, and two years later gave his first public demonstration at Selfridges in London, when presumably things had moved on slightly from the boxes and darning needles! In the following years he also pioneered research into fibre optics, radar, infra-red television and crude video-recording.

In 1944 he produced the world's first colour and 3D images.
