Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The name of the Irish city Dublin comes from the words in the Irish language "Dubh Linn". What do they mean?

Answer: Black Pool

"Dubh" is the Irish word for "black". "Linn" means "pool". An ancient settlement was started near a black pool of water. There was another settlement nearby, called "Ath Cliath", meaning the crossing at the hurdle ford. The two settlements grew over 1000 years into the modern city. "Dubh Linn" became anglicised to "Dublin" and the Irish language name used now is "Baile Átha Cliath", referring to the other settlement.
2. A spotted black and white dog, possibly with 100 friends, links to what ancient region?

Answer: Dalmatia

Dalmatia is a region in parts of what is now the countries of Croatia and Montenegro. The Dalmatian dog can trace the origins of its breeding to the area.
3. Scientifically, what is white?

Answer: White is the combination of all wavelengths of the visible spectrum

White light occurs when the entire visible spectrum is together. White can be produced by mixing other colours. On a computer screen, red, green and blue are combined to create white.
4. What would a damsel in distress love to see?

Answer: A white knight

In many traditional fairy tales, a damsel in distress is often rescued by a white knight. The hero is often on a white horse. Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad, from the stories about Robin Hood, are often depicted as white knights. St. George is sometimes shown as a white knight, as he slays the dragon.

The term "white knight" is also used in more general terms for a key figure in rescuing a situation.
5. "Nights in White Satin" is a song made famous by which band?

Answer: The Moody Blues

Justin Hayward, a member of The Moody Blues, wrote the song, released in 1967. The inspiration for the name came from a gift of white bed sheets that he received from a girlfriend.
6. What is a black hole?

Answer: A region in space where gravity is so strong that light can't escape

Black holes have fascinated astronomers and ordinary people. While it is hard to identify them and their effects, it is thought things can be pulled in with no possibility of escape, being stretched as being pulled in. This is sometimes referred to as being spaghettified.
7. If you mix the colours black and white, what colour will you get?

Answer: Grey

Grey is easily made by mixing black and white. A chequered pattern of black and white will look grey from a distance.
8. Which is of these was a hit for "The Man in Black"?

Answer: A Boy Name Sue

"A Boy Named Sue" is a funny country and western song by Johnny Cash, also known as "The Man in Black". It is about a man who was given the name "Sue" by his father, before his father abandoned him and his mother.
9. How many points do you get if you pot the white ball in snooker?

Answer: None

In snooker, potting the white is a foul. You won't get any points if you pot the white ball, but your opponent will.
10. Which of these movies was a winner at the Academy Awards?

Answer: Black Panther

All four movies were nominated for Oscars, but only "Black Panther" won any. The 2018 movie won three Oscars at the 2019 Academy Awards. They were for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Original Score.
