Five Lords, Five Ladies Trivia Quiz

'The Twelve Days of Christmas' mentions ten lords a-leaping, but since there's already a quiz with that theme, I decided to make a more egalitarian category safari quiz. Some of these questions are about actual lords and ladies; others are not.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SCI/TECH: By which 'ladylike' name are the Cypripedioideae family of orchids known?

Answer: Lady's slipper

The lady's slipper orchid is so called because it has a pouch at the bottom that resembles a slipper, which acts as a handy trap for insects. To escape, the insect victim must climb the staminode (a non-pollen-producing stamen), fertilising the flower or collecting pollen clumps known as pollinia.

The orchids can be found in northern South America and Central America, as well as the circumboreal region and northern and tropical southeast Asia. The pink lady's slipper is the state flower of Prince Edward Island, while the showy lady's slipper is the state flower of Minnesota.
2. SPORTS: Which sport is played at Lord's in St John's Wood, London?

Answer: Cricket

Lord's - or Lord's Cricket Ground, to give it its full name - is to cricket as Wembley is to football, being dubbed the 'home of cricket'. It is named after Thomas Lord, its founder, but it isn't the original ground - it's actually the third! The original ground, Lord's Old Ground, was established in 1787 and used by Marylebone Cricket Club until Lord relocated due to rental issues. The first Gentleman vs Players match - the Gentlemen being middle and upper-class amateurs, and the Players being professionals from working-class backgrounds - took place there in 1806.

The present Lord's was built in 1814, with the first match between MCC and Hertfordshire in June that year. It celebrated its 200th birthday in 2014, with an MCC team captained by Sachin Tendulkar versus a 'rest of the world' team captained by Shane Warne.
3. FOR CHILDREN: According to a nursery rhyme, why must a ladybird 'fly away home'?

Answer: Her house is on fire and her children are gone

As the rhyme goes: 'Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home/Your house is on fire and your children are gone'. (American players can substitute 'ladybug' for 'ladybird'.) In some versions, there is a sole survivor called Ann or Nan who hid under a frying pan.

The ladybird is not only a beautiful little creature, with its red, orange or pink back with black spots, but it's also helpful to gardeners as one of its favourite foods is aphids. Aphids are pests that carry diseases and weaken plants by sucking sap. In European folklore, they are matchmakers that will crawl on a woman before flying to the person she loves. The Cherokee see them as a symbol of protection, while in Celtic tradition, they can banish evil spirits with their wings.
4. RELIGION: Which name for the Devil means 'Lord of the Flies'? (Ask William Golding...)

Answer: Beelzebub

If you're a Brit of a certain age, you'll have probably studied William Golding's 'Lord of the Flies' at school. The book got its name from one of the nicknames for the Devil, which in turn comes from Ba'al Zebub, the name of a Philistine god mentioned in the Book of Kings.

The king Ahaziah asks Ba'al Zebub instead of G-d for advice about an injury, and the prophet Elijah tells him he will die by G-d's words. In demonology, Beelzebub is one of the Seven Princes of Hell and is associated with the sins of Gluttony and/or Envy.
5. MUSIC: 'Lady Marmalade' was a 1974 disco song by Labelle. Which British-Canadian girl group covered it in 1998?

Answer: All Saints

'Lady Marmalade', a song about a prostitute from New Orleans, was written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan and was inspired by Crewe's visit to New Orleans. Labelle recorded the original version - Patti Labelle claimed she had no idea what it was about - and All Saints covered it as a double A-side, along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 'Under the Bridge'. Singer Antony Kiedis disliked the All Saints version as they took out the final verse (which contains the line 'under the bridge downtown, that's where I drew some blood') and he felt they had sanitised the song.

Meanwhile, 'Lady Marmalade' was drastically changed, with the original verses taken out and replaced with two new rap verses and one sung one, and 'Creole Lady Marmalade' was replaced with 'where do you think you're sleeping tonight?' The only recognisable bits were the refrains of 'hey sister, go sister, soul sister, go sister', the lead-in to the chorus ('gitchi gitchi ya-ya da-da' etc.) and the famous line, 'voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?' The 2001 collaboration between Christina Aguilera, Pink, Li'l Kim, Missy Elliott and Mya for 'Moulin Rouge!' was far more true to the original.
6. TELEVISION: On which UK reality TV show did Charles Ronald George Nall-Cain, aka Lord Brocket, appear in 2004?

Answer: I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!

Along with fellow aristocrat James Hewitt, Lord Brocket - also known as 3rd Baron Brocket - became a reality TV star in the '00s when he appeared on the third series of 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!' Reality TV fans will remember this as the series when Aussie singer Pete Andre and model Katie 'Jordan Price' got together. Lord Brocket had previously been arrested for insurance fraud in 1996, and had a reputation for a large collection of Ferraris.

After 'I'm a Celebrity...', he hosted the game show 'Scream! If You Want to Get Off'.
7. ANIMALS: What kind of insect is a painted lady?

Answer: Butterfly

The painted lady - Vanessa cardui, to give it its real name - is a distinctive-looking butterfly and one of the world's most common butterflies, with an orange and black pattern on its wings. The underside of its wings is brown, black and white, with eye-like shapes.

The only continents where it is not found are South America and, unsurprisingly, Antarctica. It likes to feed on plants in the Asteraceae family (i.e. the daisy family), and has a very large migratory range, even crossing oceans.
8. PEOPLE: Of the four 'Lords' listed here, which one was an actor most known for playing Steve McGarrett in 'Hawaii Five-O'?

Answer: Jack Lord

Jack Lord played former US Navy Lieutenant turned policeman Steve McGarrett in the original series of 'Hawaii Five-O'. McGarrett would often say 'book 'em, Danno' to his colleague, Detective Sergeant Danny Williams (James MacArthur). The series also featured Kam Fong Chun, an actual Honolulu police veteran, as Chin Ho Kelly. Outside 'Hawaii Five-O', Lord also appeared in 'Dr No' as James Bond's associate Felix Leiter. He died in Honolulu in 1998.

As for the others, Jon was the keyboard player for Deep Purple, Peter was a British stop-motion animator, and Herbert Gardiner was an American philosopher.
9. HOBBIES: Which popular Italian pudding traditionally includes ladyfinger biscuits soaked in coffee?

Answer: Tiramisu

Not to be confused with okra, which is also known as lady's fingers, ladyfingers are spongy biscuits shaped like fingers and sometimes coated with sugar. To make tiramisu, they are soaked in espresso; they can also be used for trifles, where they are soaked in sugar syrup or sherry, or charlottes, where they are used to line the mould.

In Italy, they are known as 'savoiardi' and are thought to have originated at the Court of Savoy. They get their spongy texture from the air beaten into the eggs, which are separated before beating.
10. GEOGRAPHY: In which province of Canada would you find Lord River, a tributary of the Taseko River?

Answer: British Columbia

The Lord River is a tributary of the Taseko River, located in the mountainous Chilcotin Country region of Central British Columbia. The Taseko itself, or Dasiqox in the Chilcotin language, is a tributary of the Chilko River, which in turn is a tributary of the Chilcotin River. The Chilcotin River gets its name from the indigenous Tsilhqot'in, an Athabaskan-speaking group who live in the south of British Columbia.

There's also a Lord River in New Zealand - it's on South Island and flows from the Lord Glacier to the Lambert River near Hari Hari.
