Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Snow

Answer: Early epidemiologist

The 19th century British physician John Snow came to prominence partly as a result of tracing the source of a 1854 cholera outbreak in London to a particular public water pump. He was also a leader in the development of anaesthesia and medical hygiene. Epidemiology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study of risk factors for and patterns of disease in populations with a view to controlling disease.
2. C.P. Snow

Answer: Novelist

Charles Percy Snow was a scientist and novelist who also rose to prominence in the British Civil Service. In terms of literature, he was best known for his "Strangers and Brothers" series which ran to 11 novels and had a 1984 TV series adaptation. He was also known for a famous Rede Lecture in 1959 called "The Two Cultures" about the British education system, which he followed up with two non-fiction books on the topic. Essentially, he condemned the system which rewarded humanities (especially Latin and Greek) at the expense of science and engineering.

He contrasted the British system to the approach taken in the American and German education systems which took a more balanced approach.
3. Jon Snow

Answer: British journalist and TV presenter

British journalist Jonathan George Snow, better known as Jon Snow, spent most of his career with the ITN television network, first as a correspondent before becoming the news anchor of "Channel Four news" programme between 1989 and 2021. He was the longest-serving presenter of the programme.
4. SNOW (spy)

Answer: Arthur Owens

Arthur Owens, later known as Arthur White, was a Welsh double agent for the Allies during the Second World War. His code name was SNOW, a play on his surname. During the 1930s he operated a company making batteries for ships and was a contractor for the Royal Navy as well as the Kriegsmarine (German Navy). He was asked to spy by the British in 1936 and then by the Abwehr (German military intelligence) in 1938. His German code name was JOHNNY.

The British agency MI5 decided he could become a double agent. He became wealthy from his Abwehr payments but it is likely that neither side fully trusted him. He found himself in a British jail at one point along with Rudolf Hess, the Deputy Fuhrer. He was released from jail in 1945, given money, changed his name and then later moved to Ireland with a new wife and new baby.
5. "Snow" (1936)

Answer: Mao Zedong

Mao Zedong wrote the poem "Snow" in February 1936 during his revolutionary leadership phase. It was written just after the Long March during the Civil War and before the Second Sino-Japanese War. "Snow" was one of his more famous poems and was written in a traditional classical Chinese form.

He was a prolific writer in areas of political and philosophy as well as being skilled in Chinese calligraphy.
6. "Snow" (2002)

Answer: Orhan Pamuk

This was a reference to the prize-winning 2002 novel by Turkish author Orhan Pamuk, which was translated and published in English in 2004. The novel was set in a time of social unrest in modern Turkey. The action mostly took place in Kars in eastern Turkey, where in real life such tensions resulted in a spate of suicides of young women. 'Kar' in Turkish means 'snow'.
7. "Snow (Hey Oh)" (2006)

Answer: Red Hot Chili Peppers

American band Red Hot Chili Peppers released "Snow (Hey Oh)" as the third single from their 2006 double album "Stadium Arcadium". The 'snow' here represents both drugs and a clean slate with which to start over. The song went to the top of the "Billboard Modern Rock" chart for five weeks, their third number one in a row and 11th to hit the top of that chart. "Stadium Arcadium" was the band's first album to top the "Billboard 200" album chart.
8. Chrissy Snow (character)

Answer: Suzanne Somers

Suzanne Somers was the American actress who portrayed Chrissy Snow in the first five seasons of the TV sitcom series "Three's Company" (1977-1981). Somers' demands during contract negotiations in season five resulted in a much diminished role for the character with appearances only in one-minute closing scenes in a few episodes. From season six Chrissy Snow was replaced in the apartment by her clumsy cousin Cindy Snow (portrayed by Jenilee Harrison).
9. Jon Snow (character)

Answer: Kit Harrington

Jon Snow was one of the main characters in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series of fantasy novels by George R R Martin. The series was adapted for the TV series "Game of Thrones" over eight seasons (2011-2019). British actor Kit Harington portrayed Jon Snow in the TV series, appearing in 63 of the 73 episodes.
10. Coryo Snow (character)

Answer: Donald Sutherland

In "The Hunger Games" film series, President Coriolanus "Coryo" Snow was the head of the state of Panem until deposed. He was portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the first four film adaptations (2012-2015), which were based on the original trilogy of novels by Suzanne Collins (2008-2010). Collins also wrote prequels (2020, 2025) but it was Tom Blyth who portrayed the young Coryo in the first prequel film (2023).
